Successfully updated the wifi/bluetooth card this past weekend. I have a 2010 5,1 with dual processors. Everything working well/as expected. I do NOT have an Apple Watch, but all my bluetooth peripherals are working quite well, and "new" (to me) functions like AirDrop etc. are now available and working. Running High Sierra on firmware 144.0.0.0.

This whole post is a run-down of my experience, just in case anyone else is deciding if/how to proceed.

I used the same no-solder upgrade kit (Broadcom 943602, with Bluetooth 4.2) from eBay that MacGarage used (post 1,417):

Bluetooth 4.2 upgrade kit ($125)

Kit included everything I needed. I had watched a video or two, read some online instructions (including the last 5 pages of this thread), and mostly followed the printed instructions included in the kit. I deviated in one very significant way:

TIP: I *highly* advise anyone doing a wifi/bluetooth card replacement to first remove all SATA drive sleds, PCIe cards, the PCIe fan assembly, and the entire processor cage (including both processor fans):

Mac Pro 5,1 processor cage removal

Took me about 8 minutes to do all those removals, and doing so allowed me MUCH clearer access to the wifi card, the bluetooth card, all cabling, and the motherboard with full range of motion with my hands/fingers. I didn't have any of the frustrations reported by others connecting antennae. I was also able to run/tape the antenna into better areas (bottom of the whole case, like the OEM wifi cables). TIP: Before removing the cage, make sure to detach the front/rear fan cables from the motherboard (3 total fan connections for the cage)!

As for placement of the 3 WiFi cables and 1 BT cable to the wifi card, I followed the kit instructions. From "top" to "bottom": Ant 3 (J0/A0), Ant 1 (J1/A1), the new bluetooth extension cable (J3/A3), and Ant 2 (J2/A2). Not sure if that order makes a difference- I know results here have varied. This order seems to be working just fine for me, and my machine is under a heavy (music studio) desk.

TIP: I advise attaching the 4 antennae to the wifi card first, then attaching the wifi card to the adapter, and then seating the wifi card into the motherboard. After it was seated, I then screwed it into place and attached the 2-wire bluetooth data cable to the adapter. I've seen others complain about trickiness of attaching the antennae, but I didn't really have any problem with that. I attribute this mostly due to A) the processor cage removal, and B) attaching the 4 antennae to card before it was fastened to the motherboard.

The one thing that did NOT go at all according to plan was removal of the old bluetooth card. The screw on the upper right of the card, which screws into the post/riser, would NOT budge. I actually tried about 7 or 8 different tools (all the correct size), and even chipped/ruined the tips of about 5 of those. Small tools (like the one sent in the install package) couldn't generate enough torque, and my efforts with larger hand tools resulted in shattered tips and/or stripped the screw. I have no idea what the issue was- I suspect that the screw was somehow glued at some point in the past- perhaps even at initial assembly. In any case, that card was not going to come out unless I just outright snapped it off the screw post (most likely destroying the card). All directions I could find everywhere said to remove the old BT card, so I was a bit worried about what might happen leaving it in there (are there any other connections to the card aside from the data cable and BT antenna?), but I finally had to just give up. As my experience has now taught me, as long as you've disconnected the data cable, it's no problem to leave the old one in there. In fact, if you ever have to "revert to stock" for any reason, it's perhaps even a good idea not take the original out in the first place (leaving the adhesive intact, etc.). Just reconnect the old card to the motherboard. Not sure why all the guides everywhere say to remove it- don't see a benefit to that.

After physical installation was complete, I booted right up (per normal), no issues, BT 4.2 recognized. Then, I booted into recovery, and followed crjackson2134's series of terminal commands (post #1311). No issues so far- haven't encountered any wifi or BT limitations.

In the end, this was pretty easy, and the antenna connections weren't so fragile as I'd been worrying about. Turns out I also have no need for an external BT antenna- very happy about that. 100% internal.

If I wouldn't have had so much trouble with the old BT card screw, this whole thing would have been painless and taken under 30 minutes total (including processor cage and PCI card/fan removal and reinstallation).

That Bluetooth card was pretty darn tight, I put the solder station to it for awhile, and used my very good Wiha screwdrivers on it, got it out, but the screw was mangled and the Bluetooth card itself lost its antenna connecter ...
I however did very much struggle with the antenna connectors, small parts and big hands?
I found this upgrade on install, and getting Apple Watch unlock working solid,
Along with getting the correct driver to run Windows 10, ummm rather advanced Upgrade ...took much longer than expected, mainly the software side...

Installed the Genuine Apple WiFi 802.11ac Bluetooth 4.2 Adapter Upgrade Kit Mac Pro 4,1/5,1 from eBay (post #1426) for Mac Pro mid 2012, with the right phillip #1 screwdriver and very easy to replace it.
BT and Airdrop is working fine on Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur.

What's the purpose of the 2nd command? I seem to have everything working without it.

So what I found is that without the perl command to change the kext the continuity features worked erratically. With the kext change all of the features I wanted (airDrop, Universal Clipboard, handoff) work rock-solid. So I guess that command changes the -4360 kext to work with the Mac Pro otherwise it doesn't? Is that correct? (I'm doing something a little unusual using the Fenvi PCI card to update the Wi-Fi and an Asus USB BT Dongle to update bluetooth and everything is working great now.)

I've got a question for those who have upgraded the original 2.0 BT module to the 4.2 one. Did the 4.2 module improve the signal strength ? (even with the poor internal antenna)

Thanks !!

In my 2010, it really did not improve it much. I ended up installing an external antenna. Previously, I had a 3.0 USB Bluetooth dongle that I plugged in on a hub on my desk for the same reason.

no, the signal strength is even slightly lower and therefore only an external antenna will help.

also the connection with magic1 devices is worse
and therefore I would, if apple BT devices are used,
absolutely recommend magic2 devices!

Got Continuity, Handoff, and unlock with Apple Watch working with a bluetooth 4.0 card on my 4,1 (flashed to 5,1) Mac Pro. Everything works amazingly well, and I spent a fraction of the cost of the kits on eBay ($53). Had to do a little splicing of the bluetooth wiring, but was well worth it for the $72+ saved.

No, you will need CAT. However, with CAT it works great, especially Apple Watch unlock which is honestly awesome.

Sorry, a newbie here..

What is CAT?

I am looking to upgrade my Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008) running 10.11.6 (El Capitan) to utilize AirDrop/Continuity and am trying to decipher all the different parts needed.

Continuity Activation Tool, though iirc it's largely been replaced by terminal commands now.

HI, I'm attempting this for the first time:

I purchased a kit which seems comprehensive and bought a BCM943602CS.

After pulling everything apart I ran into what I think is a snag.

The antenna connectors on the BCM943602CS appear smaller than on the original card that came with my 4.1

I have gently attempted to put the aerial connectors into the sockets on the card, with no luck.

Can someone confirm that these cards do in fact fit, or not?

Cheers

Hi everyone, after reading a lot of posts I am a little confused. I want to upgrade my cMP 5.1 wifi bluetooth card to BT 4.0.

I went on ebay and purchased a genuine apple bcm94360 (1st thumbnail below)...

I was looking at this adapter on amazon (2nd thumbnail below)...if I use this adapter what other things are needed (wire extensions etc)?

I read that I am also going to need one of these (15 PCS 4 PIN 1.25mm Female Connector on One Side - 150mm 1571 28 AWG & 15 PCS 4 PIN 1.25mm Male Connector) in order to make it plug and play so I dont have to solder? (3rd thumbnail below)...

and I also read I need one of these also (U.fl IPX Male to IPX Female Antenna Cable UFL/u.FL/IPX/IPEX RF Coaxial Extension Cord ?? (4th thumbnail below)

The other confusion I am having is that I also need to attach this to a external BT antenna for signal strength and I don't understand where that would attach to with the above setup...I have the cMP hardwired to ethernet.

thanks any help is appreciated

Joe

I have the set visible in the photos, WiFi AC works without problems,
I don't have BT, I know I should power the adapter from the BT motherboard, but where would I connect it
on adapter side?
ok, I looked a bit and it follows that my adapter is only for WiFi and BT cannot be run on it, am I right?

Hey Quattro,

I've just finished upgrading my cMP 4,1 to use the card you have in your post.

First I'll vent: Upgrading the WiFi and BT on my cMP 4,1 has been one of the biggest PIA's of all the numerous PIA's this hobby provides. That being ventilated...

1) You need a mini-PCIE (mPCIE) adapter card that you fit your broadcom wifi card into.
2) Then, you'll insert that adapter into the mPCIE slot on your MoBo where your original WiFi card was plugged-in.
3) Then, for BT to work, you'll need to connect the adapter card to the USB power plug on your MoBo next to where the original BT was/is mounted.

You can get an inexpensive kit like the one in this link:

But you'll need to figure-out how to connect the usb power cable from the adapter card to the usb connector on the MoBo. I took the cords in the kit to a local tech who spliced the male connector onto the cable for $3.00 USD (YMMV) because I suck at soldering.

You'll also need a bluetooth antenna extension like the one (actually comes with 2) in this link:

Then, you'll need to put it all together which is the trickiest part of the whole process because the antennae are hard to attach to the broadcom card, and once attached they, make it hard to attach the broadcom card to the mPCIE adapter card.

Or you can get a very expensive kit like the one in this link:

Whichever parts you choose, my best sincere advice is:

A) First remove the CPU try enclosure cage entirely before doing this upgrade. It takes about 15 mins of fidgeting to remove and later re-install it, but will save you potentially hours of struggling to get clear access to the back panel MoBo. All the YouTube videos I watched, the person doing the upgrade spends most their time and frustration wresting around the CPU tray cage.

B) Use a hard card, like a an expired credit card, to snap the BT antenna connections in place. My fingers alone couldn't do it, but using a hard card snapped them all in place in seconds.

Good luck!

Hi everyone

I have a 2012 5.1 running Mojave. Recently I did the WiFi/ Bluetooth 4.2 upgrade with this kit. Installation went fine and everything shows up in System Report. I did the terminal activation that has been discussed here, logged off and on from iCloud, but I still can’t get Airdrop, Continuity to work. AirDrop seems to work on and off at times. Any idea where to look?

Hi @SpiroG ,

Wow, it looks like you're building a great machine. Congrats!

Have you reset PRAM and SMC? Forgive me if you've did it already, but I know that I often forget the obvious stuff.

Good luck!
