which gts

If you flash a 8800gt rom on a 9800gtx you would get a 8800gt...
But the 9800gtx is not exact the same hardware as the 8800gt so you would get a broken 8800gt. ;)

U are right. The risk is very high and the costs too. The difference between 8800gts and 9800gtx is not really great.

I think i will take the gts, and stay on the safe side of life.

Does anyone know if i must take an overclocked evga card or can it be the normal one???

So many questions for such a little flash...

would this firmware work in a 8800GT with 1gig of memory?

I tried flashing the Akimbo 1 GB 8800 GT with the 64 Bit rom ( I own a 2008 Mac Pro) and it did not work. It would flash but had massive artifacts and the os would crash almost right away ( Both OS X and Windows). Using the 512 MB version of the same card works just fine. I would stay away from 1GB cards.

It does not matter if you flash an overclocked version or a standard one, because the clock rates are set in the rom itself, and as you will be flashing with a 8800GT rom the card will be running with the values of that rom, and those are lower than the standard GTS clockrates anyway.

Seems awfully expensive here in Ireland when I can buy the Apple one for €200

Are they much cheaper in the states or somthing ?

Oh yeah I got mine, eVGA 8800gt regular version, a couple of months ago for $220 Canadian dollars. If you search around now online they can be had for less than $200 and depending on the brand you are getting if you trust that you will get the mail in rebate then you can get them around $150.

Thanks Altimeter88!!! Bought the eVGA card from newegg for $159.99 after rebate, flashed it with your ROM and it's working perfectly now.

Rom Size

For flashing the 8800gt for the older MacPro's do you need to have a 128K rom size or does the 64K versions work? Thanks

Ok, I've read through the threads and I'm still confused. Could someone do me a favor and answer the following questions:

1) Can the older Mac Pro take a flashed 8800GT?
2) If the answer is "Yes", which card exactly should I buy from Newegg?
3) Again, if the answer to the first question is "Yes", assuming I buy the card recommended in step 2 which file should I flash it with?

Thanks in advance for helping out a confused individual :).

1) Answer is yes

2) Answer is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130319

3) Answer is Altimeter88's Post #39 or Post #53

Another success report!

Leadtek WinFast PX8800 GT ZT! Flashed with MacPro using Freedos boot CD and FAT32 partition on harddisk to create backup of original rom.

Seems the same in the UK as well. Dabs want £152 for the EVGA card (512-P3-E802-AR), Apple are selling it for £156.

Makes the Apple option seem like a good choice. Just need to decide if it's a worthwhile upgrade over the 1900xt.

Running " EVGA 8800GTS"

Hi all,
get a Standart "EVGA 8800GTS" from alternate to run with altimeters rom.
I got problems with my usb flash drive but managed it with a extra hdd.

Greetings and thanks a lot for the help.
assassins creed runs really great compared to a x1900xt overclocked.
All settings high at 2560x1600 and still no noise.
Now I am waiting for a tool for reclocking this great card to factory settings and above.

Bumble-bee,

You can use RivaTuner to reclock core, memory, and shader back to 8800GTS speed. You can OC it to EVGA 8800GTS KO speed also.

I also reconfigured fan control (both auto and directed fan speed) back to EVGA 8800GTS KO setting. Fellow formum user have reported fan not working correctly using 8800GT32.rom. I haven't experienced this problem, but I have used RivaTuner from start. Many reported no problem with fan. So YMMV. You can get fan, core, memory, shader, and voltage information from your current 8800GTS firmware using Nibitor.

See http://www.vaguesoft.com/index.php?pageid=rt207 for good RivaTuner guideline.

You can use RivaTuner to soft OC the card until next Nibitor update which hopely will allow firmware OC of the card.

Cheers.

Hi chocomonster,
i have looked on that rivatuner but it seems very complex. I never have used this program, i ever used the ati standard catalyst tool for my ati x1900xt.

Can u give your settings, i have read that you have the same card as k.o edition. That one was not available anymore in germany so i took the standart one which should run the nearly the same settings.

I have a little (great) problem to understand (with my terrible english) this link you have posted and i am afraid of cooking my GPU by a wrong fan management... (auto & direct controll)

Greetings... Bumble-Bee

I could use some help from the experts. I'm going to give you as much info as possible to help troubleshoot.

My Mac Pro was bought in Feb of 2007.

I bought the 8800GT card listed in the previous post, the eVGA model. It's the same part number as recommended.

I created a FAT32 partition in Vista and copied NVFLASH.EXE and the 8800GT32.ROM file from Altimeter to that drive.

I rebooted into the FreeDOS CD I created and choose the "DOS only" option, number 5.

I changed to the FAT32 partition and ran "NVFLASH --SAVE 8800orig.ROM.

I ran "NVFLASH -4 -5- -6 8800GT32.ROM". It said it completed successfully. I did a "NVFLASH --compare 8800GT32.ROM", and it said that they were the same.

I installed the 8800GT in my Mac Pro, making sure to attach the power supply from my old Radean x1900, which I removed from the system.

I started up the Mac Pro. I got the chime, and then the gray Apple screen, and then about 20 seconds later I get the transparent black "You Must Reboot Your Computer" screen (kernel panic?).

I reflashed back to the old ROM and was able to boot windows back up on my Vista machine. I retried the flash back to the Mac Pro rom and am still getting the panic.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if this will solve your issue but do you have anything plugged into your usb ports? i use to get kernel panics when certain items like memory card readers were plugged into the usb ports.

I used nvflash --index=1 -4 -5 -6 8800GT32.ROM as the command when I flashed. Not sure if it matters. But just the fact that you got the Grey Apple screen on power up and then made it to the panic screen means the flash was probably good. You do have all the latest leopard updates right? Including the graphics update?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! That's why I love these forums, everyone's so quick to help out, and they're usually right :).

Waremaster has hit it on the head - I didn't install the Leopard graphics update. I'm a noob :). Thanks so much for the suggestion, Waremaster, everything is working perfectly now.

Bumble-Bee,

All 8800GTS 512 are pretty much same. KO edition just means that EVGA guys modified reference firmware and tested for stability for extra $. It just guarantees that you dont have a defected memory / core. But since G92 GPU has so much overhead for overclocking, you dont have to buy factory overclocked card. Get any GTS card as long as it has correct size EEPROM.

For Auto Fan:

Target adapter -> low-level system tweaks -> Auto setting with duty cycle min = 36, duty cycle max = 100, T min = 60, T range = 32, T operating = 78, T low limit 65, T high limit = 85. Save fan profile and apply fan setting at windows start up. I also use restore fan setting after suspended mode.

Fan Directed Control:

Driver settings -> system tweaks -> fan -> create Fan 60%, Fan 80%, and Fan 100% profiles. I also use "apply fan settings at windows start up" with 36%

Scheduler:

I have fan 60% at 69-77 core temp
fan 80% at 79-87 core temp
fan 100% at 89-99 core temp.

hope that helps

Clarification: You can use either auto fan or directed fan to control your card. If you use auto fan just omit the scheduler portion so you dont have duplicated inputs. If you use directed fan, dont click start with windows under auto fan.
