Size does matter but apparently larger is more enjoyed than longer. Up to a point, then it becomes too difficult to use and the pleasure is not there anymore or it can even be painful.
I must admit mine is a bit too big and that has caused me some issues when using it.
You'll no doubt be interested in the "Fold" model when it comes out.

any idea why a 2:1 ratio is "special" compared to say a 16:9 ratio?
It’s not special. But previous iPhones (since the X) allowed for it, so games and other apps, as well as some YouTube videos, came to be designed for it. Android phones also use that aspect ratio. It was actually LG who first released an 18:9 smartphone, before the iPhone X.

My theory is that the main motivation here is to reinstate the 18:9 unobstructed area that the notch previously provided and that the island is currently cutting into:

This may be an indication that the island will be less temporary than Apple initially planned, or else they should have done that from the beginning.
As your illustration shows, when they brought out the 14pro, they increased the height of the screen to allow for the island so that the content area below did not change. Yes, they did that from the beginning.

Exactly! I don’t know why this issue was never raised by the numerous apple blogs? The magic pill (as well as the “smaller” notch of the iPhone 12) both take more vertical space than all the other iPhones with notch (X, Xr, 11, 13). Is that what innovation is supposed to look like??
Yes, it was brought up in previous discussions. What people found, when they looked at the specs, was that the screens on the 14Pro were made taller by the same amount as the island grew. The result was that the content area beneath the island was the same as the area under the notch. Win win.

I do like the idea of a bigger screen and bigger battery. The screen ratio is going to make it worse to watch videos, but the screen definitely would be too wide if they didn't change the ratio. I am concerned how manageable it will be though. The 12/13/14 Pro Maxes are already pushing my boundaries a bit, though I adjusted better than I expected.

I'm scared to know the starting price of this model though.

Do you guys not use the Reachability feature?

I’m reading that in the tone of “do you guys not have phones?!” but yeah I do actually use it but the phone is already hard to use one (right) handed. And of course it pops back up after every selection. Guess I’ll have to use it more.

It’s always seemed a little hacky though I’m not sure how they could make it better. If they keep getting taller they need more ideas like that.

Master the skill. Here you go!

Bloody ridiculous for a phone.

Hardly, remember when people used to hold these giant things up to their heads? And these only made phone calls, nothing else.
A smartphone today is a portable computer in your pocket, a minuscule increase in height isn’t going even be felt.
