I wrote the previous post; I am still happily using Mavericks as I described above.
One thing that I forgot to mention is that I use, and highly recommend, a Finder enhancement app called XtraFinder, which adds (or restores) very many features to Finder, including (just to name the ones that I use and find most valuable): full-color icons in the Finder sidebar (as in previous versions of OS X: this restores some of the chrome that people above noted that they liked in previous versions of OS X, as I do), label drawing that colors the whole filename (as in previous versions of OS X), spring-loaded path bar, display folder item count in list view, show total size of selected items in status bar, and a menu item for copying the path of a file or folder in various formats (I added shortcuts to these commands and use them almost every day).
I use XtraFinder version 0.25.5 from 2015 with Mavericks; it crashes on very rare occasions, but it's easy to quit it and relaunch it when it crashes. There are newer versions of XtraFinder for more recent versions of macOS, although since XtraFinder patches Finder, you must disable SIP (System Integrity Protection) to use XtraFinder with the more recent versions of macOS. Of course, there is no SIP in Mavericks, so it's very easy to use XtraFinder with Mavericks.
