I found the bios for the PowerColor RX Vega 56 Nano Edition here: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/202224/202224

I'm testing it now on the Pulse 56 and the fans stay spun up high so I added it to the issue present list. The fans stay at 2000 rpm at idle and they go down to 1200 rpm playing an HEVC video, but then after the video stops they go back up to 2000 rpm.

Someone on Reddit noticed some new Apple Vega GPUs in AMD’s drivers, three Vega 10s (6869, 686D, & 686E) and four Vega 20s (two variants of 66A3 & 66A7.) It’s likely the Vega 20 7nm Radeon Pro GPUs will be for the Mac Pro 7,1 and will feature up to 32GB of HBM2 with 1.28 TB/s bandwidth. What we don’t know is if they will be standard PCIe cards, built-in, or custom cards like in the 6,1. The new Vega 10s could be for a new iMac or high end Mac mini. Or if we’re lucky a custom GPU for the cMP.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/8zk8yi/amd_radeon_pro_vega_20_gpu_is_for_apple/#ampf=undefined

Update: A couple 66A7 cards (Radeon Pro Vega 20) have shown up in benchmarks being ran on Windows PCs, so it's a standard PCIe card. That means the Apple variants could also be standard PCIe cards.

hopefully apple learned their lesson after people got so pissed about the proprietary gpus in the trashcan that they wouldn't do it again

This worry me most. Apple only talked about the thermal corner, never says proprietary parts is a problem on the Mac Pro line.

Thanks for alerting me; What could possibly happen if i continue running Snow Leopard and would get compromised? Would another person be able to modify files on my Harddisk? Even delete them?
Acutally i like it so much because of FrontRow and especially Rosetta, which is really handy for legacy apps.

Yes, full system compromise. Bank details, email, documents, anything you browse or do is extremely vulnerable.
You're essentially running an OS with SEVEN full years of vulnerabilities. On the whole they are cumulative. This here is just a tiny snapshot of some of the vulnerability fixes in macOS in 2018 alone.
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208692

If you need to run an old OS due to a requirement to run old software then that's fine, but take it off of the internet and be cautious when using flash drives.

Hello , actually i feel quite secure on older hardware/software, as it seems more stable than newer releases of OSX, and also the functionality is not impaired at the cost of so called "security" or "SIP" or whatever ... i don't like being put into a box. Think alot of these Security updates are just a drive for "updating" the whole Apple-Eco-System, which is fine, but not when dearly functions go missing or are disabled (Quicktime?)

Aside question, how happy are you with your Amfeltec Squid setup? Is it a stable solution, and how fast is the "mix" of SM951 and Xp941? Thanks

+is it true that when one installs Mojave the graphic card, if from AMD, gets automatically 5GT/s link via some sort of update of the Graphic Card Firmware?

Sorry to call you out on this but this statement is rather naive.
Here’s just one example of where you are vulnerable. All it takes is browsing a website:
https://security.stackexchange.com/...et-virus-just-by-visiting-a-website-in-chrome

Nothing about Mojave (or the graphic card firmware), but just the cMP firmware version. As long as you upgrade to 138.0.0.0.0, ALL PCIe card (which means including any PCIe graphic cards) will able to automatically negotiate at PCIe 2.0 speed in ANY OS (including 10.6.8, Windows, and Linux).

and in order to receive this Firmware update one has to install Mojave once to get it done?
Is this Firmware only for MacPro 2010-2012 or also for prior MacPro?

Thank you, sounds quite good news.

Only for 5,1. Years is not important, 2009 flashed to 5,1 can also update.

The firmware and the updater is stored in the Mojave installer. But there is no requirement to install the OS. You can simply download and run the installer. This will trigger the firmware update without installing the OS.

Hey folks, would anyone in the know be able to confirm FreeSync is still not working as of 10.13.6+ and Mojave?

Thx

I unfortunately have confirmation from Apple that they will not be officially supporting Vega cards in the Mac Pro 5,1. So any issues we have with them that are specific to the cMP will not be intentionally fixed by Apple.

"Apple Developer Relations

There are no plans to address this based on the following:

We recommended an Ellesmere card.

We are now closing this report."

Perhaps this could change if a lower power Vega card is released that has a single 8-pin or dual 6-pin boost connectors. Apple also may not want the older cMP to have graphics performance that is close to the iMac Pro or new Mac Pro. It makes sense that they want people to have reasons to upgrade.

Ellesmere, WTH? They specifically recommend a couple of Polaris cards.

And aren't Vega cards officially supported as eGPUs? Or does Apple think that only MacBook Pros should use eGPUs? None of it makes sense.

Ellesmere is Polaris, as is Baffin.
They’re basically saying use the RX 400 and RX 500 series of Polaris GPUs, specifically the RX 560 and 580.

I’m not the least bit surprised that they’re not supporting Vega cards. Hard to power in the cMP without a lot of fuss.
The Sapphire RX 580 Pulse is more or less plug and play.

i wonder if apple is in flux or holding pattern while waiting for 7nm parts.
mad at intel for no 7nm chips, mad at AMD for vega being late/overpriced and cant see them going for nvidia RTX cards that cost so much.

there was that post about a geek bench mac osx score on thread riper score before it was for sale
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/geekbench-mac-pro-running-amd-thread-ripper-2990x.2135053/

maybe apple is not shore what to do?
unless they relay do make there own CPU/GPU

level1techs mentioned that you can explain apples overheating laptop easily if apple designed the laptop around intels roadmap for 7nm parts and heat/power requirements for 7nm.

That's a Hackintosh. No Thunderbolt on AMD based systems yet.
