The dvi - Hdmi adaptor I'm using it (is the same as I used with rx580)... for the screen sharing instead?
Screensharing is for you to check from other Mac if the card is correctly recognised.

Use different outputs from the GPU, some cards don't have all the outputs working.

Test via screen sharing from another Mac, use a DVI to HDMI adapter, etc.
Ok, use the MacBook pro

I turned on the laptop, but I don't know how to connect to the Mac Pro, I M on the Wi - fi himself, but in the Mac Pro I think that file didn't work

Search a tutorial on how to enable screen sharing, see how it's done, you can do even via SSH.

If you don't know how to use ssh, install a working GPU and enable it manually:

SystemPreferences>Sharing>Screen Sharing

Okay, I'll put the rx580 and the screen clears on the screen so we can see how it recognizes the gpu. Thank you, 1000.

Update:
With a good cable I had managed to get her to leave.
At least I have confirmation that it works.
For the wires, I have to do something cleaner.

There is reason to use that cables combination. Which is balance the power draw between the mini 6pins.

The card not necessary draw power evenly from the 8pins. Better to balance them by ourselves, in order to avoid over stressing one of the mini 6pin.

Last thing please: can you give me a link maybe amazon (I'm in Italy) where you can get that cable you have?

I really don't know, I got my cable from China for just $2 (I am in Hong Kong).

I don't know what's the cheapest way for you to get such cable locally / on the net.

There are plenty of options on the net. e.g. This one

However, I don't know if that's too expensive for you (mostly because of shipping) or you have to wait for a long time (e.g. form AliExpress).

But I am sure some others can give you more hints. Plenty of members here buy this kind of cable on the net.

Will Primitive Shaders ever be enabled in Vega like in Navi?

Vega does not support PlayReady 3.0 yet.

I’m not a regular to this forum, I hope you can help me.

What I have:
  • Mac Pro Early 2009 4,1 firmware upgraded to 5,1 (bought from eBay seller a few years ago)
  • 2x6 core 3.46GHz
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4095MB
  • Running El Capitan
  • A spare NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 (not installed)
  • A spare NVIDIA PNY GeForce GTX 680 2048MB (not installed)
  • On USB: Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, (I don't have High Sierra), Mojave

Where I want to get to/what I need:
  • I want to run the latest or nearly the latest Mac OS
  • I want flexibility down the line through getting the right graphics card
  • I’d like to get a card that holds one or two NVMe drives. I believe I will only achieve their full potential if I get Mojave or above? (currently I have a card with dual SSDs).
  • I don’t need a super fast machine for gaming, but I do want it to run well.

What I think I should do:

What I don’t want to do
  • Faff about with modding my power supply
  • Take up more PCIe slots than is necessary
  • Have loud running fans

Questions
  • Will the above card allow me to simply swap out the old one and upgrade straight into Catalina?
  • is my Mac too old to make the desired upgrades, or is the fact it is showing as 5,1 after the firmware upgrade, mean it is possible?
  • I read about a need to delidd the CPUs, but given the CPUs in my Mac have already been upgraded by the eBay seller I got it from, is that covered already?
  • I’ve read that I’d need to get 6- 8 pin cables for the Sapphire Pulse graphics card mentioned above, does anyone have a link to good ones to get?

Additional
  • I do actually also have a Mid 2010 5,1 Mac Pro with a quad core 2.8GHz CPU (and Yosemite), but I’d rather not use this machine as cosmetically on the outside it is looking a little more worn and the power supply does buzz slightly.
  • However, I’m hesitant messing with my main machine in case I cock it up as it is my work machine (self employed). Maybe I could make the upgrades temporarily on the quad core machine as a test and then if all goes well do it on the 12 core?

So focussing on the ‘Where I want to get to/what I need,” can you give me your recommendations?

Many thanks

Ross

1) NO it is not OOB plug and play, you will have to upgrade your firmware; the latest is 144.0.0.0.0 for the MP 5,1. If for some odd reason you already have this installed-then yes it should be plug and play. (Check your current firmware in About this Mac>System Report>Hardware Overview>Boot ROM Version). Catalina is not officially supported for the 5,1-you can only get that new OS with using a patch. Mojave is the final supported MacOS for the 5,1.

See here for further firmware instruction: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mp5-1-bootrom-thread-144-0-0-0-0.2132317/

2) No it is not too old. Yes it is possible once your firmware has been updated.

3) Don't worry about this-some of us have been running lidded CPU's for a while-not a major concern since you are already operational.

Thanks for the response.

Well I seem to have made some progress on this. Today I have been using my lower specced Mid 2010 5,1 Mac Pro as a guinea pig.

Last night I was surprised to find that after a Google search there was a link on the Apple website for High Sierra, I didn't think it was going to be that easy! I didn't have it on USB, so I had expected it to be a real problem getting HS as it is so out of date.

I clicked the link and upgraded from El Capitan to High Sierra. I already had Mojave on USB so I then used that to attempt to upgrade. Already after much time wasted waiting for progress bars, by the time the moment of truth came, Mojave rendered my boot drive as a symbol that looked like a no entry sign. Dammit!

I installed High Sierra on another drive and then weirdly all of a sudden the failed Mojave drive suddenly sprang into life and booted ok. Maybe somewhere along the line the firmware upgrade hadn't properly taken place.

The firmware is now: 144.0.0

I'll have to look into that patch.

Maybe I'll look at buying that graphics card now and an NVMe drive to use as my boot drive :)
