I'm sure there is probably a response somewhere in this thread but does anyone know which 6900XT is compatible (as in actually fits in the 7,1?)
The card I originally bought was 33cm and was probably about 2cm too long.

The AMD reference design cards are less than 27cm, and the Gigabyte cards about the same. I am chasing either of these options.

Glad to see this has (finally) happened. I've got a Radeon VII at the moment which is ticking along just fine running 2x 4K displays on my hackintosh, may be tempted to upgrade based on these metal scores! That's if I can find a card. Stock in the UK is VERY Hard to come by.

In other, somewhat annoying news, the beta appears to have been pulled. Maybe it went out early? I did think it was surprising it came out before 11.3 GM. Unfortunately this means I won't be able to upgrade my main system yet. But tomorrow I will move the 6900XT and Big Sur 11.4 beta 1 SSD into my main system so I can get an idea of performance with real hardware.
Wow, glad I started the update on my 7,1 when I left this morning.

Nah you better just sell it to me.
But seriously I’m not sure if it will ever work in 5,1. Is it on the beta already that adds support for that card?

I have no cMP experience, but I know there are cMP 5.1 users using other modern GPUs so I would think there's a very good chance you can get it working in a cMP as long as the card fits and there's enough power available.

You may well need OpenCore + Lilu + WhateverGreen to get it running. There's a thread elsewhere on this forum about running those on real Mac hardware like the cMP 5.1.

Please see this thread:

You'll need 11.4+ for driver availability. cMP (MP5,1) booting Big Sur 11.4+ is the separate issue you must solve first to access the drivers for 6XXX series.

Definitely great news, but I’m sure the early drivers will likely be pretty buggy. I wonder how long until Apple reveals an MPX module

if the w5700x pro was already fairly competitive for the price with the more expensive Vega ii, I can imagine a 6800 or 6900 xt will blow those GPUs out of the water

Can someone please check the newest Big Sur Beta and RDNA drivers with Mac M1?

tahnks for your answer. I heard about it. reading along the thread I couldnt realy see if there is a solution for it. Seems like no... (I'm not into this stuff) There was a plan for my machine: Get a good graphics card running, update the system it one more time (maby if possible Os 12) until xCode runs out of iOS support and get the M2 MacPro...

honestly, if you offer me a good price for the Radeon VII I would offer you a good price for my RX 6900 xt which I most probably will not be able to run in my cMP 5,1. Prices for Radeon VII are soring even higher than the RX6900 xt...

I think that’s not possible, as there are no M1 systems with amd cards currently and still no egpu, or did I miss something?

@DFP1989 Did you want me to try an HEVC test? Upload a file and I'd be glad to give it a go in FCP X.

@vslab I heard back from Beppe of OTOY that Octane Benchmark doesn't support Metal GPUs, and won't until later in the year. So that's out for the time being.

But he did give me an alternative benchmark, in Octane X: a "Chess Set Procedural" orbx file which he's been using to benchmark different GPUs.

I've got the 6900XT in my main system now, and I ran the benchmark as per his instructions.

Here's the competition:

My result...

11 seconds!

Very pleased :)

I can also report that multi-monitor is working fine with no hiccups noticed yet. I have four screens connected - 2 x DP, 1 x HDMI, 1 x USB-C to DP. One is 3840x2160 @ 60, the other three 1920x1200 @ 60. Sadly I don't have any >60Hz monitors so I can't test that.

Number of outputs is the only thing I don't like about this card. I bought both of my two previous AMD GPUs because they had six outputs. Not that I often used six, but I did sometimes use five. Oh well, can't have everything.

I did cheekily wonder what would happen if I connected a USB-C hub to the GPU, a hub that has multiple HDMI outputs. I'm 99% sure it won't work; best case I expect it will just give a mirrored picture on two screens, as macOS sadly doesn't support MST. But for the sake of £40 I might try it (can always send it back.)

Just sent you a PM with some files ?
OK I threw your two files onto a 4096x2160 25fps timeline and scrubbed about a lot. It seems OK to me? No obvious juddering or lagging as I scroll about. It's not nearly as quick as ProRes or DNxHR footage would be in scrubbing (at least compared to scrubbing in Resolve), and in Resolve I always create proxies for H264/5 footage so I'd do the same here if I was editing this source footage. But based on this test you could definitely do editing on this without having to create proxies first.

While scrubbing I can see VTDecoderXPCService using up to 400% CPU. Activity Monitor doesn't show it using any GPU, but I suppose it must have been - maybe HEVC decode doesn't show up in AM's "GPU %" column.

For the purposes of that screen recording I only had a small viewer, but I also tried it with the viewer full-screen on my 3840x2160 monitor, with the UI on a separate 1920x1200, and the result seemed the same.

Based on the information so far, I have created an interpolated chart for Octane bench. If these results are confirmed then the 6900XT is insanely fast taking account Octane X does not use hardware RT on Radeons at the moment.
