I haven't looked at this yet, but am planning to try soon with injecting PowerPlay tables from a Windows OC into macOS to see what happens - see if I can spot any benchmark improvements. Same method has worked on previous AMD GPUs I believe.

I'm not quite sure how to monitor GPU power usage in macOS. iStatMenus doesn't seem to have an option for that - at least not with my 6900XT. Maybe because it's a new card? Not sure on that.
That sounds like fun. My little bit of dabbling with mine leads me to believe that the card may lie to you on what clocks it is running versus what scores you get.

Do you know if Apples drivers raise the power limit on the reference 6900xt? OOB mine (windows pc) is limited to 255 watts, even though the card is supposed to be good for 300 (technically 375 if you include the PCIe slot).

Seems like the AIB cards would be much faster since they all have higher power limits.
It's the other way around. The Windows driver preset 0% PowerPlay. For reference 6900XT, that means 255W.

In macOS, there is no PowerPlay info in the Apple driver. Therefore, unless we can inject that by ourselves, the driver will use the max avail PowerPlay settings in the VBIOS, that means 15% for reference 6900XT.

And 255x115%=293.25 (~300W)

The amount of used GPU flooding the market has gone up like 10X in the last week. People dumping their Nvidia 3090 cards and taking the profit while they can. So maybe Radeon 6900/6800 will follow.

Loaded up some 4K 4:2:2 10-bit HEVC and there really isn't much if any performance improvement over the W5700X. Footage plays smoothly in DaVinci Resolve Studio 17 beta with a LUT, a small bit of grading and some sharpening applied.

Hoping to see improvements in FCP X as time rolls on :(

Thank you for your pictures and tests. Does it support 4K120 frame output?
Radeon 6000 series and RTX 30 Series both support HDMI 2.1 (and the equivalent DP version) and will allow 4k120 assuming your content can push the resolution/framerate.

How is the effect? My monitor supports HDMI2.1, 4K120 frames

great! you have the same specs as mine, any real diferences in FCPX between W5700 and 6900?
I haven’t had a good chance to thoroughly test, but early impressions in my current workflow that is heavy on Canon 1DX III 4K HEVC footage isn’t particularly promising.

A complex project with grading, sharpening and graphics is smooth on my M1 Mac mini, and choppy to the point of useless on my Mac Pro even with the 6900 XT.

I’m keen to see if there are any improvements as the 11.4 betas roll on and any updates to FCP, but it feels pretty crap that a 16-core system with excellent graphics can’t play a simple HEVC 10 bit 422 timeline when my fanless M1 Air can.

I'm hoping for better performance in Resolve when it comes to noise reduction and grain etc. I mostly work with prores, so that's where my W5700XT chokes up currently.

I'm sure the H265 performance will improve as the software updates come along. It's getting so common in cameras now, they surely have to be working on how the apps deal with it.

RDNA’s compute performance hasn’t been that great (especially compared to GCN). I am really curious to see how CDNA compares, but AMD seems to be taking its sweet time with that line.

This sounds like a beta version behaviour to me or are you saying that the same happens with your standard mac pro Card? In that sense you can‘t compare an M1 with your current setup because of the components that need to interact for what you want to use it for. Currently (11.4 Beta 1) the maximum i would expect is the compute capability with metal rendering dedicated software, where the task is loaded onto the card, without going back and forth between the ssd, cpu, ram and gpu, like in your case. That definitely needs more stable version then a beta I‘d say. Maybe also they pushed that beta out half cooked, because they felt some pressure from their fanbase ;)

Got my 6900xt today and have it installed. Is there anyway to make it the default without plugging cables in? I don't see that "Prefer external GPU option" in Get Info and don't really want to buy new cables if I don't have too.

Almost always need to use headless adapters of some kind if you want to trick macOS to utilize GPU without monitor(s) properly.

From my understanding, the M1 Macs do HEVC 10 bit 422 perfectly, and I don't believe any powerful Mac Pro will be able to handle it due to the hardware, even with new GPUs. I think 4-2-0 10 bit works, though.

I have a 24 core thread ripper with dual 3090s as well, and even that struggles with 10 bit 422 from the R5. M1 Mac? Handles it easily. It's not about raw power here, just the hardware decoders

If the GPUs support hardware acceleration of the codec it would be fine, but either the 6000 series doesn't (I still haven't found a definite answer on this), or the early drivers in this beta aren't fully optimised yet.

The 10-bit 422 HEVC is playing well in DaVinci Resolve Studio on my 7,1, but I need FCP to.

New Beta today... any news of 6700 XT support?

Edit: no new beta today. Sorry!
