Is it possible that the oled issues with Apple are because they don't have a lot of experience with oled? They don't even have a iPad with oled yet and my understanding is that they started oled on the phone not too long ago

I don't think so. Apple had even more variance with their LCD screens on both the iPhone and the iPad. Also, Samsung manufactures those screens, not Apple. Moreover, it's their 3rd year of this OLED design. Let's not forget that even before that they had plenty of time with OLED on the Apple Watch.
It all comes down to pure variance. It might get even worse once there are more suppliers of their OLED screens, which will probably happen next year.

I decided to do AppleCare+ express replacement and I am very glad that I did. The new phone is still on the warm side compared to my XR and XS, but much less so than the 11 Pro Max it is replacing. And the colors are much more vibrant. In the attached pic, both phones have identical settings - True Tone off, Automatic Brightness off, screen brightness set to 50% by Siri. The replacement phone, left, has much more depth to the colors and looks even better in person.

It’s a iOS Bug. The more colorful Wallpaper is visible by default when you first boot the iPhone. When you change the wallpaper for first time manuell, the color is way less intensive.

there is a bug with the “dark appearance dims wallpaper”-option. Select a default wallpaper - orange, blue or green - then switch “dark appearance dims wallpaper” off. Now restart the iPhone. After the restart my wallpaper was colorful as it should in the preview option.

and... sorry for my bad english. Hope you can understand it. 😬

Do you guys have an idea how long after the release of a new phone model do refurbished units start to exist?

Hi guys - I too received my 11 Pro and immediately noticed the very warm white balance, and overall yellowish hue on the screen. I promptly went to the local apple store to compare to other 11 Pros and realized that my screen was SLIGHTLY warmer than the floor models (my bro said I was crazy they were the same), but SIGNIFICANTLY brighter and sharper, with all settings equal.

My OCD not satisfied, I broke out an old colorimeter that I use to color calibrate my monitors and generate color profiles. Using a pure white (255,255,255) target on each device, I tested my new 11 Pro, my old iPhone 7, and my Macbook Pro. The standard in the graphics and print industry is 6500K at pure white - this is what almost all professional print, broadcast, photo, and graphics pros strive for. The results were surprising: Macbook was slightly cooler at ~6770K, old iPhone 7 was a nuclear 8900K, and the new 11 Pro was nearly SPOT ON at 6553K!

I think the take home message here is that our brains have been conditioned to perceive very cool colors as "vibrant" or "clearer" even though it's definitely not industry standard. Results attached.

Lol. Here we go again. Same every year.
This is comparing the same modrl to same model. Its not a calibration thing. Some are defective. And white point isnt telling the whole story in this case.

Here is a perfect example of uneven tint

top portion is yellow. Bottom portion is “white” or at least not the same tint as the top

I really don’t bother about the yellonewness anymore. But the unevenness gets to me

all my 2 pros so far are the same, but if you place it with no angle in front of your face all is white top to bottom, but if you tilt it you see parts white and yellow, i think it is the glass, actually, more than the screen below.

in my case the yellow to white horizontal, not vertical grading, is noticeable without tilt. And is more bright the white side, so it is a brightness unevenness.

I see the difference in the tint (or brightness) when placed flat on a table and looked at from above. So even with no tilt there is an obvious difference.

my partners phone has such a little amount of difference between top and bottom. But her screen is twice as warm as mine overall

I understand now, what i have left to right, you have it top to bottom. What a mess, honestly. I managed to order one 1 hour ago, i will compara new one with mine at home, keep the best, return the worst, and this is the last thing i do. This is time consuming, stupid, totally not customer oriented. I wonder if they are just replacing in boxes products returned since 9 days ago, as this current phone of mine had 2 mini scratches. Tiny but crazy for a 1159 euros product. I wonder if someone returned it after scratching it and seeing the brightness variance, and i got it "as new".

Interested to know. If you rotate the phone so the notch is at the bottom, does the colour shift remain the same or switch positions?

Meaning the screen coating/reflection is causing colour to be uneven.

I will check at home. I am on my way home with a second pro from the apple store. After paying it I opened the box in a calm place there and saw the cameras where dirty, like when you place your fingers on them. I am pretty positive this telephone is a returned one. The daily new stock the shop has is a combination of new and returns. I will check home if it is a better screen and unscratched. If so, I keep the new one.

i find crazy to believe the put used phones in new boxes. But when is so easy to return them i guess they have to try...

I will never buy again an iPhone in September, being a early adopter is penalised with ***** units. It is an scandal.

Has anyone successfully bought a Pro or Pro Max that that feel the display is cooler toned?

I’ve gone through 2 Pro Maxes and 2 Pros now and all 4 have a warm toned screen. These came from 4 different stores too. And if we’re caring about serial number stats, they were different manufacturing weeks as well. One Pro was even from a different factory than the other Pro.

I’m inclined to believe this is just how Apple intends for them to be this generation.

Note: I do not have my old XS Max to compare it to (already sold it and shipped it off a week ago) but based off what I like I can tell all these Pros/Maxes I’ve had are warmer than my XS Max was.
Where it is most jarring for me is after using my MacBook Pro or my iPad Pro which are both cooler toned. It makes the warm tone/yellow that much more apparent to me. I want a device I’m happy with at this cost but I don’t want to keep buying and returning these things either. It’s generally hard to tell under the bright lights at the Apple Store but I’ve compared my phone to a handful of display models and to me they generally look the same.

Please check and confirm. You’ll see that the screen coating actually plays a part here.

Also, Apple does not sell returned devices. All returned devices are sent back and refurbished for replacement genius replacement stock or express replacement stock - The dirt you describe will be from the factory which they forgot to clean it after inspection - QA does slip at launch to fulfil the demand. We have to remember that each device will be handled by at least ten different people during its assembly, at least

Will apple change these in stores if bought from a 3rd party (sky mobile in the UK) - Or will they be changing the screens in the store?

They will exchange in-store via warranty but you won’t get a brand new sealed retail unit. You’ll be given a Genius Bar replacement which at this point are brand new. You will have a hard time convincing them to warranty replace the unit due to a yellow screen, sadly.

If you want a sealed retail box replacement, then you’ll need to contact the 3rd party In which you purchased the device from, in this case, Sky Mobile.

I highly doubt that the phone you purchased was already a returned device. All returns are sent to Apple headquarters to be evaluated and be used as a refurbish on the refurbished section. Apple never sells you a phone that was opened and returned, they don't reseal those.

well, it is the first apple device i have with fingerprints, or rests of it. And the 50mm camera has a super light scratch on top of objective, crosses half diameter of the circle. I am taking pics to see if it will be influencing the pics.

my first pro had the back frozen glass scratched next to camera bump, which i will return.

the only phone that looked new was the max i returned for lack of brightness reasons compared to store ones.

Overall, not so nice for a customer.
