Decided to try the 11 Pro Max. First one had poor uniformity where the top 1/3 was noticeably dimmer and was more orange when using True Tone. Returned it and re-bought today, the new one is perfect. Great uniformity and not yellow. Nice and crisp and bright. Looks identical to the smaller 11 Pro I also got, also not yellow. Good screens are out there, just have to get lucky.

May I ask what area you live in?

I rewrote for clarity:

Here’s is the thing... we are looking for white to be D65. D65 white point and 6,500K are not the same thing.

When measuring the grayscale RGB balance I see that it’s got enough green, just enough red and not enough blue. Red and green with not enough blue in the grayscale creates a yellowish color cast, a yellowish white point.

The RGB balance in the grayscale can be all over the place and still measure a color temperature of 6,500K.

I measured 3 Pro Max units and they are all yellowish. It looks to be a feature of this display. Trying to understand why Apple did this.

Anything to do with Samsung trying to reduce blue light in displays for its effect on people's eyes?

Boo. This is even worse than last year’s yellow-tinted iPhone XS displays.

My iPhone X had the perfect white point, which was also superior to my iPhone XS. Now this iPhone 11 Pro is just even worse.

It’s too warm, warmer with True Tone on. Why aren’t many reviewers addressing this? Surely they’d notice especially with True Tone on, no?

Looking at my display, the whites are so unnatural. It alters the overall colors quite drastically. It doesn’t need a comparison to notice how yellow these displays are this year.

The DisplayMate review is FoS, probably got cherry-picked the best display on an iPhone again. Every year they lose credibility for me.

Chicago / U.S. My regular 11 Pro was ordered from Apple online. Got both Pro Max locally at Apple store. Return of bad one went smooth, no stink eye from Apple sales guy.
Ok. So I’m guessing then the online might be the way to go. I’m in the Midwest and my store thinks they are gods gift to the world. Online is always easy going. Congrats on the win

I believe the gray color is entirely software related. Based on my observations it has nothing to do with hardware. First, by way of background, I have an iPhone X running IOS 12.4.1. The whites are crisp and beautiful and alive, unlike the gray background on my new 11 Pro which came with IOS 13, and now running 13.1.1. When I first got the Pro, the list of text messages was gray but the list of emails was WHITE. Now that I have upgraded to 13.1.1, BOTH are the same color gray. However, the little iMessage box where you type a message is notably WHITE, as contrasted from the gray message list. Clearly, the phone has the ability to create a white background where the iOS allows it. The problem is, some idiot in their infinite wisdom decided to create a gray background, maybe to avoid the stark contrast that would exist with night mode. Who knows. Has anyone tried to upgrade the iOS to 13.1.1 on an iPhone X to see what happens to the color? Sounds like a horrible thing to do and I’m not ready to ruin my iPhone X but it would be interesting.

The different whites in Messages and the like are software related, but the tints and other issues we're experiencing are definitely hardware related. I even noticed that when rebooting the Apple logo isn't even as crisp white on my 11 Pro as it is on my XS. The different whites though, that depends on brightness. I noticed that on lower brightness the difference is noticeable but when the brightness is higher all the whites are the same in Messages. Though still ever so slightly dingy.

I have read reports that seem to suggest that a tint can disappear when you are actually using the phone instead of just jumping to conclusions and returning it right away. I personally think that yellow is not an issue if it's not like a variance of >200K less in color temperature (which would make the display warmer). And with usage that could also change.

I'm inclined to agree with this. I compared my new 11 Pro out of the box to floor models in 2 local Apple stores, and the demo models were definitely slightly cooler, but dimmer at max brightness (with TT and AB off). Obviously, their screens would be more "broken in" than mine. I've also been measuring color temp at pure white for the past 3 days, and the screen itself has gotten about 200 Kelvin cooler since I unboxed it 4 days ago. Was 6553K, now 6760K. Don't know how long that trend will last, but there's definitely some kind of reaction/aging/drying gong on.

That said, I calibrated my macbook pro monitor to nec 709 (which would contain a D65 whitepoint). It also now measures about 6600 K, but looks noticeably cooler with purer whites than my 11 Pro. I think Apple may be playing with RGB values in software somehow - handicapping blue, or augmenting red - but still keeping it on the 6500K curve.

In any case, it's completely inexcusable that we can't embed icc profiles, or at a minimum, independently adjust RGB channels and white balance, like we can on any TV set made in the last forty years.

Do you think it will get to the same point of "white" as the X or XS? That would be amazing

I tried both the 11 Pro & 11 Pro Max in the EE Store today. Once I switched off True Tone which was on for both models on display, the screens were pure white at full brightness like my X. However, my X was far far brighter.
I left the store feeling very very unimpressed along with the £79 a month basic tarif that they are charging for just a 64GB 11 Pro left me truly horrified. That's almost £2000 over two years for a phone. I can't justify that continuous payment. That's the price of a MacBook Pro 13" TB with 1TB SSD option.

Keeping my X and we'll see what the 2020 range has to offer, if not, I'll hang onto the X indefinitely.

Here's a photo of my 11 Pro and Pro Max side by side. Identical settings, auto brightness on, TT off. I've rarely (if ever) gotten two iPhones that look identical, these two do which is great.

I'd like to start maybe having everyone provide Serial Numb info about build and factory.

Go to http://sndeep.info/en and enter your Serial Number to check. My Release day 512 SG Sim Unlocked is below for 11 Pro Max

Neat idea.

My release day iPhone 11 Pro which has a tinted screen is from "DNP - China, Chengdu (Foxconn)" week 36.

Worth noting while there may be different assembly factories, the display part might be from a different location. We don't necessarily know where this problem originates from. (Display defect, QC issues, chemical mixture issue, binning mistake, calibration mistake etc.) Not to mention just one of these factories could have a significant number of assembly lines where only one of them had this issue.

Thanks, so most of what we've seen are week 35-37 and it's a lotto. As others start posting I'll be curious to see if we see newer builds with a reduction or increase of yellow or uneven displays. Reposting the link to keep this going.

http://sndeep.info/en - URL to check Device Serial number for Factory and Build week.

I see no issue with my display on my Pro Max. I even compared it to one in Walmart that was on display.

my pro Max looks nice and white even compared to iPhone 8, or my iPhone 7.

I am finally 100% happy with my current iPhone.
