So i watched WWDC and the Apple Intellegence bit and all that, having just recently bought the 11 inch iPad Pro 256 Gig with OLED, and since its still within its return window...its going back.

Heres the thing...WWDC killed any lingering enthusiam i had for iPads in general. I've been using iPads since the first generation and i got to tell you, the magic for me is long dead.
I know this is not going to be popular, but I’m going to say it anyway.. I couldn’t care less if I’m popular or not. The problem here is that you purchased a product for what it might become or what you want it to be instead of what it is. Truth be told, this is your fault not the fault of the product.

Imagine buying a product and having it work perfectly well for you because you went into the transaction with the proper expectations.

I get that the press releases and ads can feel misleading.

But Apple never ever promised anything beyond what we've gotten with M4 iPads Pro. So those of you who are disappointed only have yourselves to blame.

If Apple had failed to deliver on something specific then I'd get the sentiment.

But, like previous years, Apple has never promised something like macOS on iPad, or even just an overhaul of iPadOS. And still so many expect it.

Stop looking for intent where there clearly is none -Apple will never put macOS on iPad or change it drastically.

My iPad still does everything I use it for and is getting new features, so I’m happy. iPads have always been a tertiary device for me, so this is about on par with my expectations.

I’m still on the iPad 9th generation.. and it still does what I knew it would the day I purchased it.

There's some things I'd of liked to see (better stage manager, Xcode of some sort for iPad) but the iPad is still incredibly useful and I use mine all the time during my meeting hours at work.

People want to use an iPad as a proper computer with overlapping windows. Android can do that already with the phone showing the potential as it's a big hit. Apple wants to sell M4 iPads but they want to speed limit you to 20mph.

Not half as bored as I am with the conversation around iPads not being good enough.

Why can't people accept that the iPad is its own product line? It is the consumer, not Apple, that has decided the iPad is something else and then gets angry that Apple hasn't made it happen.

Certainly, there are improvements I want to see with the iPad, but ultimately it's a simple question: does it do what you need? If yes, buy it. If no, don't buy it.

What problem is a phone/tablet solving? I mean, you realise that is going in the completely opposite direction to a tablet with MacOS, right?
Because Apple can't. It is marketed as "Pro," has the newest, best version of Apple Silicon, has the same if not more RAM than a MacBook, and it still runs iOS on a large screen. If they wanted to be truthful in their marketing, it would be called "iPad Canvas" or something because the "Pro" they emphasize is artistry and little else.

Wow…a lot of harsh reactions. I’m just saying if they just blended both MacOS and IpadOS you would have a perfect computer….I don’t get the defensive backlash Some of you are on.

I’m going to keep the IPad because when it comes to drawing and handwriting, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING short of a super expensive and very stationary WACOM device comes close.

In no way shape or form am I hating on the IPad. I just wish apple would finally blend both Touch Screen Ipad Style devices with the Macs.

It just feels so inconsistent having to remember, oh yeah I can do this on the IPad but I can’t do it on the Mac, but I can do this on the Mac but not on the IPad.

That to me is Super Frustrating when other companies blend the two devices into hybrid like laptops and desktops (Microsoft Surface line is a prime example) but the software is lacking.

Thats the only point I’m trying to make here, and everyone comes jumping down my throat but some of you do get where I’m coming from so thank you for that!

I just want to live in a world where apple is consistent across the board and uses all their technology in one place to make what to me would be the perfect computer and Phone/Tablet!

Its just slight improvements year after year after year when you can blend both devices together and make an amazing all in one device!
Harsh reactions are due to one thing only:

We have seen this exact thread posted. A lot. A LOT. A million times plus one. With the same content. Throughout many subforums. Same endless arguments from both sides. It’s a dead discussion that never stops creating new threads. (From the MacOS camp almost exclusively).

Heres the thing...WWDC killed any lingering enthusiam i had for iPads in general. I've been using iPads since the first generation and i got to tell you, the magic for me is long dead.

Oh don't get me wrong, they are marvels of technology, considering growing up as a kid, I was a huge Star Trek The Next Generation fan and the idea of a touch screen computer device for real i never actually thought I'd live to see the day it became real, but low and behold, the early Iphones and the first Gen Ipad proved me wrong and even though those products have evolved so much since then, they feel so...Borning.

No matter what tier of iPad you buy, you still cant get as much work done on them as a laptop or desktop...and they really feel to me after all these years like half of what could be a fantastic computer but apple's own stubborness wont let it be what it truly can be.

Like if apple just blended the Ipads and Touch Screen Technology with their mac line, you would have perfect devices. Imagine an Ipad Pro that worked like a laptop when you needed it, then you took it off the keyboard stand and it was a tablet, or a desktop simular to the Imac 4G sunflower with a adjustable rotatable OLED Touch Screen yet still came with a standard keyboard and mouse when you wanted to use it as a desktop machine then it folded down to be used as a drawing/touch interface machine for various projects.

Problem is...APPLE WONT DO THAT BECAUSE OF THEIR STUBBORNESS with the Ipads...they NEED to sell ipads alongside Laptops, desktops and the Phones....

Imagine a iPhone pro that opens into a ipad mini for on the go use...Samsung and other companies have devices like that, its a phone when you need it that opens to a portable tablet! Yes they are expensive and not without their issues, but its possable.

I doubt apple will ever do that because they don't want to canabalize the sales of their Ipad minis....

Why have a Macbook/Ipad Pro device when you can sell two seperate devices.

Honestly, its apple's stubbornness in not putting in touch screen into their computers that just ruins the whole experence for me because now you have a tablet that apple will only let go so far, and Laptops that could be much more but they wont because they need two product lines so they sell more volume.

Ipads are borning now...so are the phones cause their is only so much you can do with them in their current form. I wasn't expecting much from WWDC but they really nurffed the Ipad Pro....

It has a M4 chip in it, no other computer they make has that...and yet, outside of the OLED Screen it does the exact same stuff the older pros did for the past 6 years.

I've tried so hard to tell myself i still love Apple products, but after this WWDC i just cant do it. They are still playing catchup with Android at this point!

I cant be the only one that feels this way. It’s so fustrating cause these devices could do so much more, be so much more, yet apple doesnt let them!
Save visionOS 2, the remaining Apple OS’s got incremental feature and quality of life updates. The Apple Intelligence strategy seems to have sucked most of the wind out of this years WWDC. How it plays out later this year remains to be seen.

I'm sure that there were changes under the hood that we will hear about later this year.

The iPad still needs a bevy of changes to make it my daily driver (recording audio from multiple sources is my biggest bugaboo) and at his point, I can use my M1 12.9” Pro for all but the last mile of work, so I do when I can. I don’t expect it to replace my Mac at this point even though it does for some here. As usual, some thoughtful changes to certain friction points would be appreciated.

I’m certainly not bored to tears with my iPad, I love it, but I’ve accepted its shortcomings for what I would like it to do, which is not to be a Mac replacement.

With respect, this is nonsense.

What do AirPods Pro do to justify the Pro moniker? Or the iPhone Pro? Or, sacred cows be damned, the MacBook Pro? The AirPods and phone have some additional features, and the MBP extra capabilities. But there isn’t much difference in their respective differences and the iPad Pro in its range. The software from one Mac to the next is the same, as is its general ability to run the same software - the big differentiators are things like RAM, cooling, screen technology etc

It wasn’t that long ago that the MBP lacked MagSafe while the Air had it. And let’s not get into the castrated 13” MBP compared to the 14” and 16” - that really was a device that was “pro” in name only.

Take as much exception to the iPad Pro name as you want - but be consistent with Apple’s other Pro devices too.

As for running iOS on a large screen, I have iPhone 14 Pro Max. Tomorrow morning I will try running Stage Manager on it and do some sketching using my Apple Pencil and let you know how it compares.

Oh, wait…

Nevermind. I’ll use it as Sidecar with my Mac instead.

Oh, wait…

Ok I’ll settle for universal control instead.

Oh, wait…

I guess I’ll just plug a thunderbolt cable into it and do a file transfer.

Oh, wait…

Dammit. The iPhone version of iOS really sucks, huh? Why can’t they put iPadOS on these things? They must be scared that it would cannibalise iPad sales.

😐

What sort of audio recording are you doing?

We can’t take our own expectations and put them on everyone else, that is a lesson in frustration. I am a “people” and I don’t expect to use an iPad with overlapping windows. The reason I don’t expect that is because that is not the way iPadOS works. I don’t buy a product for what I think it should do, I buy a product for what it actually does.

You’re not supposed to. You have laptop and desktop for that.
half of what could be a fantastic computer
It is half. It’s a product that is positioned between iPhone and Mac.

Need to get work done? Need macOS? Well… get a Mac 🙏

About iPad being boring… I know it’s marketed partly as entertainment device but you shouldn't take that literally 😂

I'm glad you mention this. Because this is the tug and pull of which Apple have to be mindful of.

Because Stage Manager does exist with the ability to have overlapping windows... but it's off by default. Because some people prefer not to use the iPad in that kind of computing experience.

Personally, I’m glad you can disable multitasking on iPadOS 17 again. I remember you couldn’t disable it on 16 and even split view/slide over proved problematic for my parents.

Get Jump Desktop, which will let you control your Mac from your iPad. If you have the Magic Keyboard it works OK. But it’s not great. And the reason is that 11 inches just isn’t large enough for Mac apps. It’s a degraded experience. This is why Apple isn’t going to let you dual boot into MacOS on your 11 inch iPad. It’s compromised. It’s not the Apple Way.

I suppose there is a BIT of an argument for doing it with the 13 inch iPad, but you’re not going to like MacOS on the 11. Try Jump Desktop just to get a taste.
