Let's say it differently. If money is an issue... or you feel really bad spending a lot of money. Then keep this iPad.

If you're like "whatever... $4-500 more or less who cares!" Then omg... return it asap! The new iPad will be considerably better and cooler. And you WILL regret it.

Remember patience is a virtue. And good things come to those who wait!

I’m hoping the next iPP will get the same leap ahead, ‘I want that’, treatment as the iPhone X was to the iPhone 7.

My last IPad Pro was Purchased March 31st 2016. It’s now past March 2018. At this point Apple must be shooting for a July Summer Launch

The New IPad Pro Must Have.

A12X or maybe an 8 Core A11X
4GB RAM
64GB Storage
120Hz ProMotion
10.5” with No Bezels making it more like 11”

If they only change the smaller Pro this year then I’d still prefer have the existing 12.9 at the reduced price.

If they squeeze the 12.9” screen into a significantly smaller body this year for not much more than the current $800 base I’d be both surprised and mad if I didn’t wait.

The 12.9" is the device most in need of a redesign and now it's had two iterations I would put money on them shrinking the foot print if this size continued to exist.

I sold my gen 2 because it was too unwieldy as an in hand tablet. I thought I could live with it as I mostly used my original ipad pro 9.7" with smart keyboard in landscape mode and did the same with the 12.9" but soon missed the flexibility of portrait mode in a manageable size and weight. It's too big with all that bezel imo. That said the bigger keyboard cover is a huge plus.

But regarding your purchase, the saying "buy what you need today" springs to mind so be happy with your purchase. Not that I'd take my own advice and would probably be returning it because I always want the latest shiny shiny.....sorry.

Then I admit I'm still rocking my iPhone 7 plus because the X screwed up my eyes and does not warrant over £1000, and the 8 plus is not a leap ahead worth an upgrade.

This is really all it comes down to.

... and NOTHING comes to those who perpetually wait. ;)

Nobody's saying "wait forever... or wait till the 2022 iPad Super Pro with holographic display" It has to be within reason.

But we KNOW FOR A FACT that new iPads are coming this year. With at least 75% confidence that it's gonna be at WWDC. So the wait time is REALLY short now.
We also know for a fact... that the iPads will have a major redesign.

Me... PERSONALLY. I was even waiting out the iPhone X (because I wanted a plus version) and last year's iPad Pros... because I wanted Face ID... and a Home-button-less iPad... But while I would TELL people about it. I'd rarely recommend this... especially not if they really are in NEED of a new device.

Bottom line... if the amount of time you'll have to wait is short... then hell... why not wait?
If you need, like REALLY NEED!!!, a device NOW then buy one now.

Small anecdote:
I was in THAT very boat a couple of years ago... and there was a REALLY GOOD DEAL on a 4th gen iPad. You know the updated retina one... where the performance was NOT crap and with a lightning port. I was SOOOOO CLOSE to biting the bullet. However, I restrained myself... and waited another month. Boy, was I happy. iPad Air was released... and all of a sudden iPad 4th gen seemed like a total dud in comparison. I would have been soooo sooo pissed had I bought it, just because it was on offer!

It’s just around 3-weeks away until we see if Apple will do anything or not with the iPad Pros, annoying but not horrible as it’s just 3-weeks. IF Apple does the thing I have been wishing for many moons (make the 12.9” smaller footprint and get rid of the physical home button and shave the bezels a bit) I will buy that in a heartbeat.
But since we don’t seem to be getting a Mini Pro, I bought a 10.5” on sale and it will essentially be a Mini for me, (darn you Apple.)
It’s double the size of the mini 4, but it can still be held in one hand, and until something more portable comes around, I’ll keep the 10.5” and then have the (hopefully redesigned) giant 12.9”

I’m sorry, but how do we know “for a fact” that new iPads are coming this year? Do you have some sort of special inside information from Apple that the rest of us don’t? Because all I’ve seen so far are rumors of a refresh (and nothing at all in the past two months or so). Apple has announced nothing so I’m not sure how you “know for a fact” that a refresh is imminent.

Generally, as we near a refresh, the number of rumors goes up and we start to see part leaks. None of that has happened with the iPad line. In fact, we haven’t even really had a solid rumor on that front since March. I’m not saying a refresh at WWDC can’t happen. I’m just not sure where you’re getting all your confidence of a refresh from.

Me, personally... I don't. But:

"Modern iPad" references discovered in iOS 11.3 beta... as per:
https://9to5mac.com/2018/01/25/ios-11-3-modern-ipad-face-id/

Rumors of new iPad Pro's being shipped in the June Quarter, as per:

Kuo's often accurate preditions, as per:

Gurman's comments (which by now generally seem to be controlled leaks), as per:

and
https://twitter.com/markgurman/status/993644095351525377

And recent history... with Apple updating iPads once a year on a fairly regular basis.
All that combined... makes it REALLY unlikely that Apple is NOT gonna release new iPad Pros this year. And, unless they hit some REALLY BIG roadblocks, makes WWDC the most likely venue to announce them.

Definitely would like to see a 12.9 with 10.5 bezels, considering the 2016/17 15” MBP doesn’t look all that much smaller from its bezel trimming, but is a whole lot more portable I think we’d see a similar benefit with the large iPad.

Yeah that PWM backlight control is a literal headache for some people on the X :(

Ok, but aside from the tweet from Gurman, nothing you’ve linked to is more recent than March. And some of those links are from October/November 2017, which is pretty dated at this point. Nothing happening right now (or, rather, not happening) suggests a refresh is imminent. Even Gurman’s tweet points to a refresh later this year at the earliest. If horizontal Face ID is coming in iOS 12 and is intended for the iPads, why would Apple release the iPads now when iOS 12 won’t arrive until the fall? Can you imagine the flak they would take for releasing an iPad that you had to hold in portrait mode to unlock for the first 3 months of its life?

Pointing to recent history also doesn’t suggest a refresh. Last year’s iPad Pros were literally the only iPads to ever be announced at WWDC. Every other iPad model before or since was announced at a special event in either March or November (except for the original iPad which was announced in January and released in April). Just because Apple announced new iPads at WWDC last year doesn’t mean they will this year. Last year may even have been a special case since the original 12.9” model had not been updated in 18 months and was long overdue for a refresh. That’s not the case this year.

Oh I originally said:
"But we KNOW FOR A FACT that new iPads are coming this year."

To which you answered:
"I’m sorry, but how do we know “for a fact” that new iPads are coming this year?"

And this is still pretty much a given.

I NEVER said that they WILL BE released at WWDC. This is just an educated guess... that many others share.

Sorry but "we" don't know those things for a fact. Opinion, hopes, theories, suppositions, sure. Fact? 75% confidence? Maybe it's 63%. I don't know what purpose is served for declaring opinion as fact. It is certainly not helpful to those who want to make an INFORMED decision.

I'm not claiming that those things won't happen, only that it is premature and declare it to be fact.

Why not wait? Because contrary to your claims of "facts", we don't know if it is going to be a short wait. If one waits it out until the Fall and there is no new devices then what? That person is practically required to wait until March 2019 (when there is a better possibility of a new iPad).

Okay... given that... why do you even bother to visit MacRUMORS and these forums? NOTHING is EVER a fact until it's true. With this in mind... we don't know for a FACT that Apple is going to release new iPhones this year... or EVER. And no one can prove this. STILL everyone KNOWS there'll be new iPhones come Sept. 2018.

And if you take offense with my claim of 75% confidence... okay... lower it to 70%... increase it to 80% ofc it's just a guesstimate. But I never claimed to have insider info other than what is publicly known.

Considering the waiting game... I gave sound advice without insisting on doing either a) or b). I just listed options with some reasoning behind them.

If the 10.5” & 12.9” truly lose their home buttons & bezels as rumors predict, i believe the screen sizes will increase and the devices will stay the same physical size as their current models. So i think the 12.9” will have something like a 13.5” screen and still be just as unweildy in portrait mode i’m afraid. But then, i guess nobody truly knows what Apple will do until they do it. There have been zero photo leaks of the new ipad pros so far.

More likely is that the 12.9 and 10.5 remain as are or chip bump with the 11.x” pro coming in as a new premium model a la iPhone X. As a curve ball maybe the 11.x” will replace them both...

sracer, I think you may be taking TheralSadurns a bit too literally. Anything stated by anyone is an opinion. Just take it as such.

When you say "March 2019 (when there is a better possibility of a new iPad)" I think you are being quite pessimistic. 21 months between updates? Possible but waiting that long, especially after the release of the iPad 2018 and then the upcoming iOS 12 and iPhones, seems VERY unlikely in my opinion.

My hope was that something would come at WWDC but at this point I kind of doubt it. Since we have not seen any newer leaks and the tweet from Gurrman says horizontal FaceID is coming in 12, that would hint at an announcement near the release of iOS 12 - likely in mid-late September or October.

So that leaves a few more likely scenarios (in my opinion, but then you should infer that it is my opinion)
  1. The iPad is announced at WWDC and horizontal FaceID is added to iOS 11.5 or something. This seems unlikely to me and I agree that Apple probably would not release an iPad that needs FaceID w/o it working horizontally.
  2. The iPad is announced in September alongside the iPhone XI or whatever. This seems unlikely to me as iPad deserves it's own event. Especially a new design.
  3. The iPad is introduced in July or August and iOS 12 comes a bit early. Maybe since iOS 12 was rumored to lose a number of features (pushed to iOS 13). Still this seems less likely than likely (to me)
  4. The iPad is introduced in October at its own event. This is probably the most likely in my mind. I would like to see them sooner but October sort of lines up in my mind with what we know. In October - new iPhones are out, iOS 12 is out, still time to hit the holiday season with an exciting new product, more time to ramp up production (which was rumored to start in Q2/3), and iPad can have its own event.
I would love to see #1, but I'm not betting on it for sure. But I highly doubt it will be later than late October or very early November as they would miss the holiday season and miss out due to much lower sales.

I think this is probably correct. People forget that shrinking the overall chassis size of the iPad Pro would shrink the Smart Keyboard. That's not such a big deal for the 12.9" model, but it's a VERY big deal for the 10.5" model. And I know you can't really directly compare the iPhone design trajectory with the iPad design trajectory--they have not usually directly coincided in the past--but they didn't shrink the iPhone chassis at all. They made the screen bigger to fill in the space left blank by the omission of the home button. A bigger screen in the same chassis size with FaceID would be a great upgrade for users, albeit annoying for developers who just got on board with the new 10.5" screen size.

Clear, thoughtful analysis.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced there will be no iPad announcement at WWDC if the new iPads are Face ID rather than Touch ID and horizontal Face ID support doesn’t arrive until iOS 12 in the fall. Imagine a Face ID iPad on a desk with the Smart Keyboard in use. The user gets up and goes to the bathroom and either locks the iPad or the auto lock does it while the user is away. If that iPad is running iOS 11 and can only be unlocked with Face ID in portrait mode, the user would have to pick up the iPad and turn it to portrait (with or without the keyboard still attached) or resort to using a password in order to unlock the iPad again. No way Apple would be ok with that user experience.

There's also the possibility of a minor refresh (just a CPU bump to A11X perhaps?) with existing chassis. That gives Apple more time to iron out kinks with portrait+landscape FaceID.

True, but that would not spur many sales over the remainder of the calendar year. A "spec bump" will create a blip in sales and Apple would see a very down holiday quarter for iPad. I still think Fall is the most likely for sure.

I don't think it's coming this year. There hasn't been a single part leak or even a shadow of a glimpse which is unfathomble before release.

Maybe--I'm not 100% sure that's an issue. Two reasons:

1) I don't have any numbers or facts to back this up, but I feel like iPad Pro itself is just a small fraction of the overall iPad sales figures. The 9.7" standard iPad models are still the highest selling--even Apple said this on the last earnings call. There is a subset of users who will go with the Pro because they either just really love iPads and want the best model or maybe are power iOS users who use iPads as their main computer (like me). But keep in mind--there is a huge part of the population out there who never did any power user type tasks on their computers, and don't need an iPad Pro for those things either. So $329 standard iPad it is. New Pro models won't change those peoples' minds. The addition of Pencil compatibility just sweetens the deal more for them too.

2) I know some will disagree with me, but I don't believe for a second that Apple would rush out new iPad Pros this year if they're not 100% ready yet solely for the purpose of propping up holiday sales. They're going to focus on user experience first. Part of me thinks that if anything, it will be a spec bump this year, and a redesign next year, part of me thinks it will be a redesign this year, but not until fall, and part of me thinks it will be nothing at all this year.

Speaking selfishly, I hope it's just a spec bump this year so I don't lust after the new ones. I'm planning on skipping the next round of upgrades and then upgrading next time around if the feature set is right. My Apple budget for 2018 is currently being reserved for an Apple Watch upgrade.
