I’m one of those who is waiting for a new release... usually Consomac is really good with catching Eurasian Comission submissions of new devices. They even recently found out 11 new smartphone SKUs that Apple is planning launch.
With the iPad 2018 9.7’ Apple filed it in February 19 and launched it in March 27... So 1 month and a week before the actual launch... But there’s still no word about a new submission of a tablet...

PS: not all hope is lost as last year the submission was the day before they launched the iPPs... but still I would be happy if we saw new SKU submissions..

I was one of those waiting, but using my “stop gap” iPad for another week taught me a lot about my actual needs, wants, and the value of buying last year’s model on sale. I returned the open-box 2017 iPad 9.7” and got the 2017 12.9” 64GB WiFi for $649 at Micro Center.

All I really care about is the largest screen with True Tone at a “casual user” price that isn’t approaching MacBook territory.

When I bought and returned a 12.9” last month, I’d bought too much: 256 storage, cellular, ASK, and paid full price at Apple. I had to return it when I discovered a defect, but was actually relieved that I had an excuse to take it back because I’d spent way too much and wanted to see what might be updated this year. I really needed something now because my MBP is doing Mac mini duties as a server.

It feels unlikely that Apple will drop the price of an updated entry level 12.9” to $649 and I really do love this thing. Here’s hoping I still love it after it’s too late to return it and later, after it’s updated and/or an even lower price.

I have no interest in the ASK but for me, storage and cellular are non-negotiables at $600+. Granted, I'm fairly content with my current setup (2016 iPad Pro 9.7 256GB LTE + 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 512GB LTE) so it's easy for me to wait. If the next iPad gets rid of TouchID, then my waiting will mostly just be for a bigger discount on the 2017 Pro 10.5 512GB LTE. Doesn't tick off every item on my wish list but I'd get it if it's the last, best model with TouchID.

Still hoping that they release the new ipad with face ID next month..been holding off since I had a bad experience with the iPad Pro 10.5, bought one at target last year, was defective, got another one from the same store, also defective..so this time will only either be buying one from best buy or apple..so crossing fingers that apple releases a new ipad pro in the coming weeks :)

At this point, it's pretty obvious a new iPad Pro will launch this year.

But iOS 12 will launch in September 2018 so likely the ipad pro will release then as this will be needed to make face ID work. That said Apple could release it half baked.....

Maybe they release the iPad Pro in June but the software making face ID work comes out in September..crossing fingers, really dont want to have to wait til September for the new iPad :(

I think unlikely as unlocking ipad in one orientation to start with would be heavily criticised

iOS 12 isn't a make or break feature for iPad. For example, iPad Pro 10.5" was launched in June 2017 without iOS 11.

It's unlikely to launch in September as iPad Pro is expected to have A11X or A12X. If iPad Pro has A11X, then it will seem outdated next to the 2018 iPhone. If it has A12X, then iPhone users will ask why iPhone doesn't have A12X. With the current 7nm ramp schedule, June is the most likely slot.

But as I mentioned above unlocking would be gimped to one orientation if this has face ID. Although Apple have a history of releasing with features missing recently.

I think releasing a new iPad in September would be too late to target the large lucrative back to school market.

If iPhone users asked me why the the phone didn’t get the X series chip I’d loose it...the X chips are blatantly more powerful which equates to heat generation that a iPhone could never dissipate

Yep. Particularly so for GPU.

Heck, if you look at the Apple A10 multi-core benchmarks for 2018 iPad and iPhone 7/7+, the A10 has lower clock rate but scores higher on multi-core bench like due to less throttling.

I don't think that Apple can release an iPad which can only be unlocked in vertical orientation, even if this is only for some months. iPads are used most of the time in horizontal orientation....

(does horizontal = landscape orientation?) How do you know that iPads are used most of the time in that orientation?

And if so, why does Apple continue to place the front-facing camera centered on the upper bezel and home button on the lower bezel when placed in a portrait/vertical orientation? Seems like a significant design flaw.

Agreed!!! And dont forget that the Apple logo on the back is positioned as if for use in portrait as well!

I for one use my IPPro almost exclusively in portrait unless watching video...

A10 while a decent chip has poor thermals :(
I don't see it that way. What other mobile chipset compared favorably with the A10 on both single core and multi-core performance back when it was first released in 2016? As for thermals and power consumption, I get better battery life on the iPhone 7 versus 5/5s/6 (don't have a 6S but based I expect it to hold true there, too).

The A10 was able to stretch its legs a wee bit on the iPad likely due to better heat dissipation but its performance inside an iPhone is nothing to sneeze at.

Damn, I'm hovering over the buy it now button on a 10.5". If I see one for under £500 in UK I'm going in as the doubt is strong.

The wait is unbearable....

Unbearable indeed! I was miserable trying to wait until June, especially because I really love the 12.9” 2017 IPP I got on sale this month. Trouble is, I’ve still got until Sunday to return it, so I keep wondering if somehow Apple will make me wish I’d waited.

Let's say it differently. If money is an issue... or you feel really bad spending a lot of money. Then keep this iPad.

If you're like "whatever... $4-500 more or less who cares!" Then omg... return it asap! The new iPad will be considerably better and cooler. And you WILL regret it.

Remember patience is a virtue. And good things come to those who wait!
