I'm hoping for the biggest possible screen in the smallest possible body - near bezel free 12.9 I'm looking at you.

With the talk of ios 12 and the horizontal face id not being available until October, so no new iPad pros until then...last year didn't we have:

'ios 11 will take full advantage of the iPads with a brand new file system etc.'

Then, didn't lots of us buy them knowing they would only get better when the new ios was released? I think lots of people were posting about how much they loved their new iPads and others were saying:

'Just wait till ios 11 is released, they'll be even better.'

We were quite happy to have the potential for things built in and then wait for the ios to catch up last year. Why would Apple think we wouldn't be this year? I for one, would be perfectly happy to get the newer, larger screen iPad with the potential for horizontal face recognition, enjoy using it straightaway, and just put up with orientating it to portrait mode in the meantime until ios 12 was released...wouldn't you?

I think it’s a little different when it involves unlocking. If I have my iPad Pro set up on my desk with the Smart Keyboard attached and I’m working on something and it locks for whatever reason, that’s a bad experience to have to pick that all up just for facial recognition.

I’ve probably just improved the likelihood of an IPP update next month. ;)

Instead of preparing to return the 12.9 to Micro Center this weekend, I bought a leather Smart Cover in my favorite color (Saddle Brown) and removed the clear TPU skin that reminded me of vinyl furniture covers.

I’m going to spend the next couple days enjoying all the good things about this device without the cloud of possible regret looming overhead. After all, I’ve gone years without an iPad, need an iPad now, and this one is handsome, affordable, and much more than I need.

Thanks for all the input and anecdotes. I’ve been entertained and learned so much from reading MR forums over the years. I come back with every new product release, Watch, AirPods, iPhone X, HomePod, IPad 2018 which led to this 12.9” and I’m looking forward to more new products. :D

Maybe--I'm not 100% sure that's an issue. Two reasons:

Speaking selfishly, I hope it's just a spec bump this year so I don't lust after the new ones. I'm planning on skipping the next round of upgrades and then upgrading next time around if the feature set is right. My Apple budget for 2018 is currently being reserved for an Apple Watch upgrade.

Speaking selfishly myself, as someone who can't wait for the new 12.9 or larger screen, and who doesn't like or use the Smart Keyboard (another individual choice that we all make independently depending on our tastes and requirements) I would be perfectly happy to have something wonderful as soon as possible and wait for the ios to catch up like last year. I'm not sure how many times such a scenario would happen with the screen locking whilst attached to the keyboard in the handful of months between a hypothetical iPad release and the new ios release, but it would be a shame for everyone to miss out because of that.

I'm trying to keep my dream of them announcing a new iPad in June alive for as long as possible!

Maybe--I'm not 100% sure that's an issue. Two reasons:

1) I don't have any numbers or facts to back this up, but I feel like iPad Pro itself is just a small fraction of the overall iPad sales figures. The 9.7" standard iPad models are still the highest selling--even Apple said this on the last earnings call. There is a subset of users who will go with the Pro because they either just really love iPads and want the best model or maybe are power iOS users who use iPads as their main computer (like me). But keep in mind--there is a huge part of the population out there who never did any power user type tasks on their computers, and don't need an iPad Pro for those things either. So $329 standard iPad it is. New Pro models won't change those peoples' minds. The addition of Pencil compatibility just sweetens the deal more for them too.

2) I know some will disagree with me, but I don't believe for a second that Apple would rush out new iPad Pros this year if they're not 100% ready yet solely for the purpose of propping up holiday sales. They're going to focus on user experience first. Part of me thinks that if anything, it will be a spec bump this year, and a redesign next year, part of me thinks it will be a redesign this year, but not until fall, and part of me thinks it will be nothing at all this year.

Speaking selfishly, I hope it's just a spec bump this year so I don't lust after the new ones. I'm planning on skipping the next round of upgrades and then upgrading next time around if the feature set is right. My Apple budget for 2018 is currently being reserved for an Apple Watch upgrade.

Yes, the standard, cheaper iPad has outsold the pro the last couple of quarters. But don’t confuse the volume model with the one that drives most of the profit. The vast majority of the profit comes from the much higher margin Pro line. Apple definitely wants to increase the sales for the pro models and make all the profit they can.

Isn’t the iPhone X’s sucess evidence that a higher priced model with significant feature differentiation from the lower priced model works? Apple definitely would like to recreate this scenario in the iPad line as well. It would drive higher volumes, higher margins and higher profits if they can add enough new features to the Pro to sell more of them. That only makes sense.

So I strong believe a new model is coming in 2018. Just I’m afraid it is in October and not during a summer month.

Just a thought.

Since Apple is pushing iPad Pro HARD to be a computer replacement... and that includes the Smart Keyboard. Wouldn't it be the next logical step for them to move the iPad Pro from Portrait first, to Landscape first?

i.e.... align the Apple Logo like it is on the MBP,
move the camera opposite of the Smart Connector.

To me... it seems awkward that they didn't do this yet, at least for the 12.9". Feel free to disagree, it's just a thought I had.

I can get on board with that theory--it's definitely a possibility. I definitely use my iPad Pro more in landscape than portrait, even for reading books, so I would be cool with it. But I know a lot of people who are opposite who would hate this configuration.

I also like this idea and external view layout, but I don’t ever see it happening. I DO use my iPP in landscape mode with a Smart Keyboard for most of my time, though. I still get irritated at a few apps that don’t support horizontal mode. <Sigh>

What if ‘Face ID horizontal’ is Beta in iOS 11.5 and the real deal comes in iOS 12?
Possible, but unlikely. We’ve seen no evidence of an iOS 11.5. Even if Apple is only testing it internally right now, it would be showing up on web logs. I suppose horizontal Face ID could be an unannounced feature of iOS 11.4. But that still seems like a long shot to me.

Wouldn't be the first time Apple ships a forked version of iOS... unavailable to any other device!

Definitely true! But, I don’t think think they would ship a version that hadn’t at least been tested internally. I distinctly remember the iPad-only iOS 3.2 and those weird extra versions of iOS 4.2.x that were only for the CDMA iPhone 4 showing up on web logs before being released. We haven’t seen that here, which makes me doubt iOS 11.5 exists. It’s definitely not impossible though!

Could be a different build of 11.4?

Well... here's the kicker.

I still believe the iPads will be SHOWN OFF at WWDC. Whether they are released RIGHT AWAY or just announced... is a different thing.

What I'd LIKE is a horizontal iPad with the camera opposite of the Smart Connector. If this is the default orientation... Face ID would work as expected. ONLY if you picked it up and held it in portrait mode (which rarely happens with the 12.9" iPad I'd wager) it wouldn't work... Apple being Apple... I'd say that is at least in the realm of what's possible!

Yeah it’s all definitely possible. I personally think it’s unlikely given that we haven’t seen a single part leak for new iPads or any evidence of a forked version of iOS so far. It could be that Apple has finally managed to tighten its security though. The good news is that we only have to wait a few more weeks to find out!

Uh huh. I'm really looking forward to the 4th. Even set up a countdown timer... but, honestly, this is more of a coincidence :D Due to other things taking place that day... haha

More likely is that the 12.9 and 10.5 remain as are or chip bump with the 11.x” pro coming in as a new premium model a la iPhone X. As a curve ball maybe the 11.x” will replace them both...

A 2nd tier more premium ipad pro? In addition to a spec bummed version of last years ipad pros? I don’t see that happening. I assume Apple will update both the 10.5” & 12.9” to the bezel-less design, But who knows. There have been ZERO leaks about the next ipad pro. No parts, pics ....Nothing. Maybe they aren’t coming until the fall with the iphone. At this point, if they were going to be announced at WWDC in a month, wouldnt there have been some leaks by now?

No, we didn't see a single photo or part leak with the 10.5" or 12.9" models last year.

I have the feeling that Gurman is gonna post something within a week. Maybe Apple's security did tighten up after all!

I can definitely see this happening. That might be another differentiator between the Pro and non-Pro models. It has been highly irritating to use the 12.9 Pro for FaceTime calls in landscape only to have the camera off to the side. It really throws off the immersive impact of video conferencing on such a large screen.

But I'm not convinced that Apple is serious about the iPad Pro becoming a computer replacement (in the traditional sense) other than using it as a marketing phrase.

I used to block out a conf room for me and a coworker so we could stream it live and discuss. I moved to Atlanta last fall and now have no one in my office here that’s as much an officienado as I am. <Sigh>.

I'd do that with you. Just that over here it starts at like 7pm... which means I can simply watch it at home.
In the last two years, though, the keynotes have always left me wanting... my excitement has basically died...

Well. I had my iPad Pro stollen on friday and was gutted as I knew replacing it meant that if there was anew one announced in a few weeks I wouldn't be able to afford/justify it. Luckily enough today whilst waiting for my replacement to arrive the police called me to say they retrieved it after an early morning raid. Woohoo!

Damn that was lucky. And that was the UK police, when did they get so efficient?
