At first I wasn't going to upgrade but now I am moving to a maybe ( like in Feb of next year). Only reason is I am a freelance media guy (run a freelance video and digital marketing company). I do use my iPhone for some video shoots for personal use and for clients when I don't have my normal cameras around. The lidar scanner and the Dolby HDR recording are big features and 5G. But honestly, I might wait for the iPhone 12 S which will have the 12hz and other improvements. We shall see again lol.

Any iPhone upgrade is always appreciated, but this year it seems like they're banking on 5G selling the device. I don't see anything else MAJOR imo. That whole magnetic thing sounds ludicrous to me. Wallet case? Dude it's 2020...use apply pay...

The 12 is over priced imo has gone up $150, 12 pro has dropped $50 and you also get 128gb, for extra $350aud here 12 pro is better value, no way i'd buy the 12 with that difference its a rip.

The 12 is £70 more expensive in my country and the Pro’s have come down £49 from last year. I don’t think the 12 is over priced as there is still a £200 difference in price. That’s enough for me to snub the Pro and especially as the 12 is a powerful phone anyway.

The gap between the Pro and non-Pro certainly seems to have closed yet again this year. I thought it was an exciting release for those of us with older iPhones and fancying the 12/12 Mini. If I was an 11 Pro owner then it seems to be a very minimal upgrade and personally I wouldn’t bother. I’m liking that the 12 comes in dark blue and may break the cycle of always having black iPhones this year.
Yeah, and it's somewhat of a good thing. I'm skipping this year (as planned) but if the offerings are generally the same next year or whenever I upgrade, it seems my biggest decision is whether or not I want the telephoto camera.

I was theoretically interested, but the increase in price for the 12 line, plus the decline in trade in value for the 11 Pro Max, is making me cautious. I need to investigate this AT&T $800 credit a bit more, but otherwise I may just keep this 11 Pro Max...

Up to $500 for your 11 Pro Max. But, I'm not upgrading either.

Which isn't good considering last year Apple was offering 600 for the XS Max towards the 11 & 11 Pro. So they offering 100 bucks LESS for the year old iPhone 11 Pro Max. What is kinda funny is that on the product page for the 11 Pro apple says because of the materials used to make the phone, it will hold value longer... SMH.

As a customer, I don't see how 5G helps me. Apple needs to better explain IMO. How does 1000000 MBPS speed help me do anything I can't do now basically as fast!

The specs on the regular 11 and 12 are very similar. You get a nicer screen and 5g on the 12. I have an 11 that is paid off and right now am leaning towards keeping it. The upgrades will be greater next year. I just upgraded to an Apple Watch series 6, and am considering the iPad Air, so they may be my upgrades this year, and grab the 13 next year. Subject to changing my mind every 30 seconds lol.

I am with AT&T too. If they offering an 800 dollar trade in credit for the new 12 pro max then I would definitely upgrade.

My current iPhone has a telephoto lens and I can’t remember the last time I used it? I won’t miss it and the digital zoom will probably be ok on those rare occasions when I do want to use a zoom.

Same thoughts here. I MIGHT get the 12 pro max early next year depending on my funds or if AT&T gives that 800 dollar trade in credit. But year, it might be good to hold off until next year.

Well if you are an AT&T customer with an iPhone 8 or newer you'd be an idiot not to upgrade even if you didn't want too since they are offering 800 bucks which is 2x-3x more than what the older phones are worth.

again, it appears its 'iPhone 8 and up eligibile' and 'up to' $800.

So an iPhone 8 user will most certainly get nowhere near $800 for their device.

I'm on the fence atm. Currently using a 128GB XR. The 12 Pro is tempting as the better cameras + Night Mode would be nice. Plus I'd be getting an OLED screen and other enhancements as well.

I have a price of £335 locked in for my XR so looking at it in that way I'd be paying just under £700 for a 12 Pro.

To me the 12 is not particularly good value as to get 128GB will cost you £849 which is pretty darn close to the standard 12 Pro.

This is my depression post: it seemed like the perfect spot here.

I was ALL on board to get a new phone this year. It would have been the first year since getting my first iphone in 2013 with the 5c, where I paid full retail. It was $550. We had NEVER paid that much money for a phone because we were pretty broke for four years, but had just made it into a better career where we had some extra money to spend and we needed smartphones.

Ever since then, it's been free iphone promotions through carriers, or screaming iphone 7 deal for $350 through best buy when the 8 was released.....

Today, I had enough money saved up to confidently spend $650, but i DID NOT want to waste my money on a iphone unless I absolutely LOVED it. I love the mini. It's perfect. Small. Light (As light as the 3gs... look it up yourself).

What I needed this year was more battery life. The iphone 7 was bad on iOS 13, and it's even worse on iOS 14. I get 3.5 hours average screen on time for last ten days. That sucks.

But what I DON'T need is a damn brick in my pocket.

So, the mini seems just about perfect! It's battery life is somewhere in the middle between the SE and the 11 (depending on metric... again, look it up on tech specs Apple page).

What isn't perfect is the $699 price with 64 GB of storage. Starting at $650 with 64 GB, or $699 with 128GB would have been palatable, as I only have that $650 pricepoint I could comfortably spend with savings.

And no I don't have a phone to trade-in because I got screwed by Verizon's "free" iphone 7 last year where they just give you 24 months of bill credits. The only clear information I can get is that MAYBE my credits will disappear if I trade the phone in and will be billed for the $200 still left due on the "free" phone. I'm screwed and can't do any trade-in promotions until the "free" phone is "paid off" by Verizon's bill credits. It SUCKS.

So, here I was all excited to finally be able to get a BRAND NEW iPHONE, the NEWEST one out there at 2am PREORDER..... Finally.

But no. It's $699. It's depressing because the 11 was $699 last year and Apple couldn't price the 12 this year at $699, with the mini $50 or $100 less. It sucks. I was expecting $650.... I'm very disappointed now and bummed and depressed that it wasn't $650.

Now I have to decide to hold onto my cracked screen 7 with terrible battery life, or spend $399 for an SE that is NOT what I would love. I HATE the curved edges. It's slippery and hurts my hands when I have to hold it tightly to keep it from falling out my hand.

So, yeah, depressed because I feel like there is NO GOOD OPTIONS this year for me.

I may not upgrade this year and just hold on to my decrepit, gimpy 7.

If anyone has any information on trading in a phone with Verizon or Apple that is still getting bill credits, please let me know. I don't know if the bill credits end if I trade in the phone or sell it, and Verizon agents aren't helpful because the 3 or 4 I've talked to can't give me a knowledgeable answer.

This sucks. I was so ready to buy a new iPhone full retail.

I really wanted to upgrade this year from my Iphone X but I just don't see the overall value. The 120hz screen would have made it for me for sure, but the screen is basically the same as the one I have. Camera improvements would have been nice, but it's not like my phone doesn't take pretty good pictures as is. On to next year...

You summed up my thoughts about upgrading from my Xs. I also want them to offer USB-C on the phone to match a growing number of devices I have that use the USB-C port size for charging.

I’m not. I upgraded from a 6s to the SE 2020 back in April. I’ve been happy but I would still like a better camera and battery.
I’m going to wait until Apple gets their 5G antenna dialed in more and see if Touch ID comes back.

So this is my upgrade year and I wanted to replace my X and I will not be upgrading... at least not to an iPhone. Been looking at the rumours with growing disappointment and today I ordered... the Note 20 Ultra. Will be making this switch and we will se how it goes.

The 12 is a very iterative update to me and besides, no TouchID in the times of constantly wearing masks as well as no 120Hz screen is too much of a letdown to accept for this price, while I got a great deal for the Note. I am sure I will go back to the iPhone at some point, but for now that’s it.

I understand your frustration, but... did you really just write this post because the mini turned out to be 50 bucks more expensive than what you saved up? Not bashing your financial situation, but just wait three months more or whatever when you will have the additional money you will be able to comfortably spend. The Mini will not be here until next month, anyways.

I feel like the people making a big deal over $50 should probably not be worrying about the latest phone...

What device do you have, and why are you not planning on upgrading?

I am thinking of buying an SE 2020 and just sticking with that for at least a year or so.. cheap, affordable and does the job.

The thing that's keeping me from upgrading: 5G has not hit where I live although it is available everywhere else I go. I'm not into taking a lot of pics and shooting a lot of clips. So, is buying a new phone worth it when my XS Max is paid-off?

This is another story, especially in the current times. But as I said, not judging anyone’s financial situation/management, I am just surprised that 7% of the entire price of something which by default will be used for a prolonged period of time can be such a big deal.

Thanks for such an uninformed post. Yes I did write the post because of $50 more than what I was hoping for.

according to the rumors and stories posted on Macrumors, the BOE fail-screens will be in the mix later this year. I'm tired of the iPhone roulette of getting terrible screen issues because Apple has to use several different suppliers and some of those suppliers are not as good as others.

so even if my financial situation fit into your assumptions, I would still have an undesirable situation with the screens.

my financial situation for buying this phone was saving up Christmas and birthday money and selling old things that I have. My work money goes straight into bills or savings.

The XR is two years old. No.
the 11 is too big. No.
the SE has battery life similar to the 7 it seems (or not enough of a jump to warrant spending $400 for)

I have zero options and it's depressing.

That magnet case thing doesn’t do anything for me either. I like using an Otterbox Defender so actually any of that magnet stuff.
