Nope,
I formatted and went back to 10.5.4 and installed the old 10.5.2 drivers.
Fallout runs fine. No problems with everything else on 10.5.4 with my Macbook so why break Fallout just to go up to 10.5.5?
Retarded.

My MacBook freezes trying to install 10.5.5 every time... I'm stuck on 10.5.2 because I had to boot from the OS disc because it wouldn't even start up when I tried to switch the drivers.

You can download the 10.5.4 combo update (google for it), that will get you up to that, then you can revert the drivers to 10.5.2 and you're good to go.
If you ever get stuck where you cant boot, just boot in safe mode. Hold [shift] at startup.

I followed this thread a while ago when I'd bought my MacBook Pro and couldn't get Diablo II working when I updated to 10.5.3, and thankfully it worked. What I have now (I think) is a slightly different problem.

Diablo II still works, and I'm running 10.5.5, which is great, but I recently bought Call of Duty 4 and it's not running terribly well. The system requirements specify 10.5.4 as a requirement, which I guess is at odds with the drivers that still allow Diablo II to run.

I don't mind rendering Diablo II inoperable on this machine, I completed it a while ago, but the performance of CoD4 is irritating me, so my question really is are my drivers still at 10.5.2 and thus causing a problem, or are they up to date but for some bizarre reason still letting Diablo II to work?

heads up. If you followed this thread and reverted your driversfor the Nvidia card and have aMac Pro or Mac Book Pro then you may have experienced what I did.

I used software update to go to 10.5.5 and Diablo II worked on my MP w/ 8800GT. However I started getting lockups and display issues. Since I D/L'd the full 10.5.5 combo update and installed it, I have not had anymore problems and Diablo II is still working.

Don't have an answer for Macbooks. Sorry.

Similar Issue

I've owned macs since forever and after a short-lived attempt at owning a PC I purchased a new Macbook. Now there's a game i used to play in the 90's called Escape Velocity (by Ambrosia) on my first 1st Gen iMac. I finally hunted down the game and downloaded an OS X compatible version and much to my dismay it wouldn't let me play it since my display won't do 256 or even thousands of colors.

I've been following this thread and have seen you guys are having the same problem with Diablo and was wondering if there was any fix that could apply to me without resorting to downgrading the driver

p.s. I don't have a pro just a new MacBook with 10.5

Nope, until a new patch comes out (hopefully 10.5.6), regular macbook users are stuck without 256 colors.

If its really important, downgrade back to 10.5.4 or earlier. If not, wait it out.

I did have D2 set to 256 colors and now get the unexpected quit when launching from my MacBook. There's not a way to reset it to not use 256 colors and get it to work on a regular macbook with 10.5.5 correct? Macbooks are just flat out of luck right?

Until the patch that Blizzard says they're working on, yeah. :(

Just posting to confirm that I'm also having problems with Fallout 1&2 under 10.5.5. I had downgraded my drivers when I was running 10.5.4, and that worked perfectly, but I'm hesitant to try that again, as I keep seeing that it is only causing lock-ups under 5.5. Ah, well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed for 10.5.6, I suppose. :(

Is downgrading to 10.5.4 as simple as running the Mac OS X 10.5.4 combo installer? Or is there more involved.

Why Starcraft and Diablo II will not work...

Check your System Preferences > Displays > and then look at your options for colors based on your selected resolution. If "256" is grey (i.e. not available), then there is your answer. This has been this way since 10.5.

There is a fix out there, if you do your homework, that will retrograde your graphics to pre-10.5 and allow 256 in addition to thousands and millions of colors. Search for awhile and you'll find it (NVIDIADrivers256ColorsFix3.0.dmg about 22.4MB).

I used it, it worked... until I auto-updated to 10.5.5.

Good luck.

Be SURE not to install that fix for nVidia drivers if you have a GMA graphics chip, unless you want a computer that no longer boots.

I just blindly downloaded the 256-color patch in my rush to be able to play fallout again. Spent HOURS trying to fix it.

Still no way to play Fallout 1 at all in 10.5.5 it seems. Even running my old PC copy in Crossover Games results in an incredibly glitchy cursor that makes the game unplayable.

Me too. I tried to restore the backed-up files in Open Firmware mode and using an Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD, but the changes wouldn't stick (I suspect HFS+ journaling had something to do with it). Finally, I booted my Macbook 3,1 into Firewire target mode (holding down the "T" key during boot), and used my MacBook Pro to restore the files using the Finder. It rebooted slowly, but then came back to life.

My lesson: fully research any "solution" to a problem that requires altering your /System directory.

Hey everybody,
Back in July of this year I used Pacifist (sp?) to change out the video card drivers so that I could use the 256 colors mode for Fallout 2. Well I deleted the game etc. and don't care about the 256 colors anymore. I just recently downloaded and installed the latest updates bringing me to 10.5.6. Part of the upgrade was video card updates. I have a MBP from July 2007, 15" with the 256 meg card etc. How can I tell if the latest Mac Software Update (10.5.6) over wrote the changes I made- I hope it did.

When they package the Updates for OS X do the driver updates build upon the last update they released meaning a partial update- or does it completely remove the current drivers (whatever they might be) and clean install the new ones? I am going to assume its the full remove/clean install.

At any rate if anyone could shed some light on how to view the drivers and secondly what should it be at?

I found the ROM Version 3175... should I check the KEX number?

Thanks!

I can see the 256 color option but its grayed out is this what 10.5.6 loks like to everyone else? Any fixes if needed?

@Geronimo-If you updated and the 256 color is greyed out, then the update is applied correctly. I can look up the kext version, but I think mine are version 1.5.36. If you are not sure you can always apply the combo update for 10.5.6. BTW, w/ 256 greyed out, it means it will work for 256 'cause Apple added it back in for the NVidia cards.

Thanks much! Perhaps Apple really does listen to us!
Take care,
Happy New Year!:p

It's not Apple but Blizzard: Rob Barris, Head of Dev told about a beta release for Diablo2 and LOD that works with 10.5.5 as well as with 10.5.6.
You can find his statement here and the beta download here

Have fun!

Coming from the hackintosh world I can tell you how to do this, but haven't actually done it yet other then messing with the hack trying to get my system to work... couple ways to do this, but this is how I would do it...WARNING!!! This could mess up your system, and I suggest backing up the files before replacing, or having a manually downloaded 10.5.3 update in case it doesn't work right. Also know how to boot your system in safe mode.

For NVIDIA, if you have already installed 10.5.3...

1. Download/install Pacifist located here http://www.charlessoft.com/
2. Manually download the 10.5.2 update from apple here http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate.html
3. Then mount the update and open pacifist, drag the mounted image to pacifist and then install everything with regards to geforce kexts/bundles and NVDAN*.kexts. They will be under /System/Library/Extensions. This will require admin password. May want to verify/repair permissions with Disk Utility after. reboot. (BTW, I suggest replacing them all, but the previous poster only mentions the geforce kexts so may not need to replace the NVDAN kexts).

For the x3100...
Follow the same outline but instead of the geforce and NVDAN files replace the following:
AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
AppleIntelGMAX3100GA.plugin
AppleIntelGMAX3100GLDriver.bundle
AppleIntelGMAX3100VADriver.bundle
AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

If it doesn't work, reboot in safe mode and follow same outline but use 10.5.3 update and pacifist to put the 10.5.3 kexts back that you replaced.

I have not updated my MP to 10.5.3 yet because of this problem, but may try it shortly. My Macbook doesn't have Diablo II on it, but this would give me a reason to try it :)

okay
i opened pacifist and went through and highlighted the files that needed replaced and clicked install
when i restarted it froze at the white screen with the silver apple
i rebooted in safe mode and if i go to the displays it shows a grayed out 256 color mode
when i try to run fallout 1 or 2 in safe mode they just crash
what can i do to get it to work in regular mode?
i run x3100

Well

Its march 2009 already and Im running 10.5.6 on a 2.1ghz intel macbook and DiabloII will not start alone or even with LOD installed. Im going to try to install it on an older mac of mine and see if it works. Any word of a patch, and what about the beta release mentioned before? Keep you updated.

That is awesome, thanks to the entire blizzard team for still updating 7 year old games.

And Diablo II:LoD (& Starcraft w/o the expansion) is working fine on my 10.5.3 MacBook, at least once I got it installed, but that took awhile. The OSX installer started, but did nothing, no screen or anything, so I had to install it on a different computer and then transfer the files to my MacBooks, but it has worked fine once I did that.

Question, Did you have to install this on another Mac in order to transfer the files to your 10.5.3? I'm having the same problem and I was wondering if it could be in installed on windows, then transferred. I don't have another mac around here...

I tried doing the fix for diablo II and it somehow changed my graphics drivers to something bad. Unfortunately i cannot get into my mac partition so i am forced to use windows via boot camp. I do have mac drive and i can access my primary partition of os x but i need to replace my original drivers. How do i go about doing so?
