hmmm, can anyone verify that diablo 2 will work with 10.5.4 on an imac with the ATI 2600? I want to update my computer from 10.5.2 but i have been worried that it wouldnt work anymore.

CJ6446, as your Mac has an ATi card, it will not suffer the 256 colour bug. You should be right to upgrade if you wish.

As for 10.5.5 fixing the X3100, I should hope it does :)

So I read through this thread, and I'm still really confused about how the people a few pages back managed to stop getting a black screen whenever they started D2. There was a really technical post about manually changing permissions from 644, which I don't know how to do.

If someone could explain this to me/just tell me how to do it, I'd be eternally grateful.

And I already have all the right drivers installed and such, just get a black screen when I start the game (if it helps, I can't change any of the options from what they're already set as, IE change change from OpenGL or anything like that).

EDIT: Well I feel stupid, I figured it out not 10 minutes after I made this post. I just trashed all the diablo related files in ~/Library/Preferences and then changed it from OpenGL to software. Works fine now.

Black Screen

I have installed the 256 color thing to attempt to make diablo II work on my new macbook pro. When i have contacted blizzard they told me to do that and it should work, yet when i boot up the game (passing the video test), it just turns my screen black. anyone know what's going on here?!!

Has anyone yet tried it under the recently released 10.5.5? I got it working by rolling back my drivers, under 10.5.4, but I'm hesitant to update to 10.5.5 because I'm afraid it will re-install the new drivers and break Diablo II again.

We believe 10.5.5 will resolve this issue for users on NV 8600/8800. We have reworked StarCraft in 1.15.3 to work correctly even if 256-color mode is not available, so if this issue arrises again in the future, StarCraft will not be affected. We will do the same for Diablo II in an upcoming patch.

I just tested Diablo II after updating to 10.5.5 and it appears to be working fine. Just wandered around for a few minutes and killed a few things without any problems other than the occasional jump in the video. That probably has more to do with my MBP trying to do a bunch of things at once. I would assume that I can also get into Warcraft III now as well. :D

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT

So I updated to 10.5.5, and not only is the problem back, but when I tried to reinstall the old drivers and reboot, it went from the gray screen to the blue screen and then right back to gray and froze.

I have a GMA X3100, not the NV most of the other people have.

Did it fail to start up just because for some reason the drivers installed improperly, or is this some new problem 10.5.5 created?

Well, I just tried it in 10.5.5, and it works! I have a santa rosa MBP, 2.2Ghz.

However, it completely maxes out the cpu. 81'C after just a few minutes of play, so it is just as playable as it was when it didn't work at all. :(

Good thing though in 10.5.5, is that the dock 'zoom' effect now works just like it did back in tiger, like budda.

Yeah, I tried it again and the same thing happened.

Also, whenever I install the old drivers it tells me they've been created on January 30 of 2008. Which seems odd to me because it didn't do that before.

10.5.5 update does not fix the issue in MacBooks with Intel integrated graphics, and it's even worse, putting the old 10.5.2 drivers doesn't work (MB doesn't even boot into the OS) when it worked in 10.5.4 and 10.5.3.

Anyone can tell me how can I go back to 10.5.4 ? :(

"We will do the same for Diablo II in an upcoming patch."

Huzzah! Thanks Rob! There is light at the end of the tunnel yet!

Diablo II LOD with 10.5.5

Same problem with me - I've updated to 10.5.5 (2.2G, X3100, 4GB RAM) and tried to downgrade the display driver. Bad idea. Renewing the system was a bit difficult with 4GB free space on hard disk.
Finally I got it and I would be more than just happy when rbarris finishes his LOD Patch for 10.5.3 and higher...

D2 LOD success

The Mac OS X patch 10.5.5 resolves the startup issue with Diablo 2 on my Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo. I am also able to run with millions of colors, in stretched 800x600 mode without a CD in the tray.

Great work Apple!

D2 Lod success

Success for me as well with Intel Macbook Pro, game is now working fine.

I upgraded to latest diablo Patch on older Macbook running 10.5.2 fixed the screen resolution and cosmetic problems under that version as per advice in this thread, then later updated macbook to macbook pro and a forced 10.5.4 upgrade. 10.5.5 resolved the crashing problem.

Edit as above its NV 8600

So i have a macbook with the gmax3100 graphics in it, and with the newest update the previous fix just leaves the startup freezing after a short blue screen, people say that this cant be fixed yet?

but does anyone know when it will?
i miss d2 lod

I just got the new Macbook like 2 months ago and yesterday installed 10.5.5 and reinstalled Diablo 2. Just like before it says there is an error booting it up and asks if I want to relaunch it or ignore it. I have colors "millions" I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Up until yesterday I was happily enjoying Fallout on my Macbook [GMAx3100] running 10.5.4 and using the driver downgrade workaround.

I too installed 10.5.5 only to find that my Fallout was no longer working so I tried the driver downgrade workaround and got the same freezing and lock ups everyone is reporting.

If someone can figure this out so we have a workaround for 10.5.5 then great!

If not then does anyone know an easy way to roll back to 10.5.4 so I can downgrade my GMAx3100 drivers and run Fallout again?

I'm probably going to format and reinstall 10.5.4 on the weekend if there is no developments before then.

Hope someone out there can come up with a fix.

Yup, the problem is back for my MB Air. It's an X3100, and now won't launch Diablo 2 again. Colors available in settings only shows "millions". I haven't tried rolling back to 10.5.2 for a second time yet. might just wait on the Blizzard patch.

Has ANYONE had success with 10.5.5 on a MacBook (not Pro)?

I know one thing that prior to 10.5.4 for me was to make sure I wasn't using dual monitors with my macbook - that would always lead to a crash, but if only the external or laptop screen was being used it was fine.

10.5.4 started the crash on launch, and I was hoping 10.5.5 fixed it...
