Normally i'd agree, but external storage is the way to go. Externals are getting close to the insane speeds as internal.
But certain features only work with the internal drive, so for that reason, you'd want more. Also - does the M4 still have the performance issues with 256 vs 512+? (256 was half speed)

wow. what a disappointment. Year and year again Apple keeps disappointing with new products. It looks like they only think that iPhone, Macbook air/pro and watch is the only core products. Nothing else. Whatever they say about anything else, is not what they show with their actions. Take services for example, that is an embarrassment. How they even thing they are competing is beyond my imagination. I was planing to upgrade o iPad mini7, that is unlikely; I was planing to get new iMac - that is unlikely; I was planing to get new aripods pro - unlikely. What is left? mini/studio or another macbook with Apple display? But who would buy that at current prices. meh.. sorry for the rant.
I think we need to accept that the consumer computer revolution of the 90s followed by the mobile computing revolution of the 2000s and 20210s is behind us and that we are now in an evolution phase with these products.

With Apple’s SOC’s, there’s no way I would order a new iMac with anything less than a 1TB SSD. And I’d still want 24/32GB of RAM - especially if I planned on keeping it five years or more. But, set up that way, I’m sure the iMac is a very nice machine.

No you won’t. A ‘cheap’ gaming PC will thrash a Mac
Depends on the games, the games I play are as good or better on my Mac

My MacBook Pro handles massive fights in wow better than my sons pc I built - 5600x 6600 pretty much what a ps 5 is

8GB, let the whinging begin! 😢

What "whinging"? The perpetual defenders should now rip Apple for "forcing" more RAM than "99% need" as even throughout 2024 they were pounding away at anyone who dared gripe about 8GB as base. But why do I NOT think that will happen? (rhetorical- what Apple chooses to have for sale is always right... until Apple makes a hop- even if relatively late like this one- and then the hop is perfectly fine & right for all).

Watch those very, VERY passionate opinions just readily shift now that Apple has gone here. Conceptually, to that group, Apple is now very wrong for "forcing too much RAM" on everyone. I wonder if even one of them will call Apple out in writing after arguing 8GB is enough for 99% all this time? Just one? Anyone?

Furthermore, look at how pricing was able to stay the same vs. countless cases made how the Apple RAM was special RAM and not commodity RAM... thus (attempts at) justifying the $200 price for 8GB more than base. Since we know that Apple won't take a big hit to margin, this illustrates that the added RAM doesn't cost much such that they are able to just "throw in" the added 8GB.

To all who wanted one of these but not at 8GB, congrats. Enjoy your new Mac.

And how nice of Apple themselves to throw consumers a bone instead of trying to jack prices the extra $200 to "cover" including the magical/special RAM upgrade for them poor shareholders. Added consumer value is ALWAYS a good thing for consumers. We appreciate the SAME money being able to buy MORE utility. More of THIS please.

Question is: will I finally be able to game on this imac ? Another question is when will the AAA gaming publishers port their games to the Mac?

Yes and No. AAA game publishers outside the ones already on the Mac App Store/Steam all depend on them. Don't expect CD projects red, FromSoftware, R* games, COD any time soon.

The games already available, do play very well.

Ah, you are right. Strange they would bin them with a completely different scheme than they are binning the iPad Pro.
If you needed any further proof that binning and "BTO" configurations are all about creating strategic price points via artificial scarcity and have very little to do with the actual "bill of materials"... RAM size is small print for iPads, and mobile devices are probably more demanding on the AI features for photography, AR etc.

Also note that close to none of those "whining" about 8/256 would be whining had Apple allowed user upgradable storage and memory!

And the same god awful white bezel.
Looks like I’m sticking with my late 2012 27” for another year until Apple figures out white bezels look like complete *** to many, many people.
