This will eat up a lot of Androids. Very good move.
$599 usd is 852 CAD, you can get a budget Samsung Galaxy a16 for $269 CAD

The device is also equipped with an Apple-designed 5G modem
Edit: For people laughing or disagreeing with the comment – seems like this iPhone gives 3 hours more battery life, compared to the standard 16. I assume most of that is because of the Apple's modem. And there's a potential for this to be even more noticeable for devices such as the Pro Max, where the battery is larger.
Well, when the modem is not functioning you will save on battery

Easy to retrofit with a case. But yeah that kind of anti-consumer penny pinching is a hallmark of Tim Cook's Apple.
but do you get charging? Is there a case that plugs in via USB and provides MagSafe/Qi charging? That might be palatable…

Has Apple ever called this a 'budget' phone? Entry level doesn't mean 'budget'. There are a lot of upgrades here over the last SE. New custom modem, a screen thats no longer from an iphone 6, support for Apple Intelligence, much better cameras, A18 etc.

It's an extra £120 here in the UK and while it doesn't interest me, I actually think thats pretty fair, taking into account inflation as well.

It's basically the replacement for the iPhone 14 in the lineup. It has a similar design but the upgraded processor and the same price.
iPhone 14… already existed.

Anyone who wanted one could have bought one already.

I’ve got no clue what purpose this phone serves, other than to comply with EU law.

Sure as holy hell ain’t no budget phone.

Samsung, here I come!

Ugh- No MagSafe?!

For Real?

TOTAL deal breaker in my view
I'm way in on MagSafe now
Wireless charging, but not MagSafe…how much more would that have cost? $1.50 in magnets? And now Apple has no iPhone below $599? That’s just nuts. Apple Intelligence seems more like an excuse for them to raise the prices of the iPhone for everyone to get in on the action and get rid of value pricing for those who could care less about AI.

Apple today introduced the iPhone 16e, its newest entry-level smartphone. The device succeeds the third-generation iPhone SE, which has now been discontinued.

This looked like a banger of a new iPhone with few compromises (it’s even less tall than the 16) BUT it lacks MagSafe! Once you get used to magnetically attaching your iPhone to a stand there’s no going back.
