RE: People complaining about iPad OS being limited.

I feel like the limitation isn't necessarily the software, but the touch input. IF Apple assumed everyone owned a magic keyboard with trackpad, they could make the software more detailed and productivity-focused. But not everyone has that, so the software has to assume touch controls which are simply limited and will never work for productivity.

The only possible solution would be to dual boot into MacOS or switch between 'desktop' and 'touch' modes, but Apple might have nightmares from when Microsoft tried to do something like that with Windows 8.
I foresee that there is going to be an entire generation of folks that will not have touched a Mac at all.

The iPad offers a different way of being productive, not a lesser one.

Agree. Nothing on my M1 pro has caused it to slow down even after all of these years. Not worth upgrading with the meh iPadOS.
Unless you're a graphic artist, art enthusiast, music hobbyist, amateur/pro film maker, etc., WITHOUT hang-ups about iPadOS.

These are just tools, folks. How you use them (or not) is up to you.

I was most excited for the nanotexture display, which is about the only reason I'd upgrade from my 4Gen Air, as I use it mostly for reading, browsing, notes, and Zoom. Then Apple killed it by greedily limiting the option to one and two gig models. You're already looking at a $1600 storage upgrade for the device. Add in $100 for the upgraded display and another $300 for the compatible Magic Keyboard and you're talking bout a $2000 11" tablet. Fully optioned, the 13" pro is $3,077, which is nearly $700 more than a similarly equipped 14" MacBook Pro that can actually run real software. Is Apple completely insane? I will pull out a moleskine and quill before I spend $2000 on an iPad.

I never said it was 3rd Gen QD-OLED. I said the sub pixel structure is Samsung Display’s and he’s inferring that only LG should be credited.
My source is crediting LG Display as Apple's main supplier of Tandem OLED displays due to Samsung having trouble with production. Samsung can fix this in time and also be a supplier. Apple tends to have multiple suppliers for the same part.

The point is different OLED types have different sub pixel structures, and the default RGB structure Apple will be using is supposedly the best one for text. If you disagree with that point, please explain. Otherwise, why are we having this conversation?

LOL. I posted several times that no way they would launch the M4 now. Aaaaaaaaand HERE IT IS !!!
M3 is an architecture for an expensive, dead-end process (1st gen 3nm). Processes going forward cannot put as many transistors on a die - the chip size is decreasing faster than the process density increases.

This is why we aren't going to see last year's iPhone Pro chip in this year's iPhones. It is also likely why the Vision Pro, which they already know will have a long time until they can offer a meaningful upgrade (gated on cost/volume of the display technology) stayed with M2.

The M3 shipped quickly after the M2 because Apple had bought out that 1st generation 3nm node, but they need to focus on process changes around more (standardized) interconnects to be able to scale up complexity on future nodes and to also do things like mixed process SoCs, and to consume things like third-party in-chip parts.

Apple can never win. At the same time they have created a bit of a mess releasing the M4 on an iPad first. Doesn't make a lot of sense but they needed a reason for people to buy iPads since sales have been declining so M4 might have been that strategy. Also if you think about what device might benefit the most from Ai I would guess the iPad would be it.

Think if Apple implement's an Ai better than Gemini or close to it and the device can be used hands free, translate languages on the fly fast, speech to text in all apps that works really well, Bye, bye Siri and hello to something that actually works. I think the idea Apple may have is to showcase AI features the iPad will be the best market segment to do it and it could boost sales a lot with M4 and AI tricks.

I have a strong feeling this is where Apple is going and it is a good idea. It feels really odd to see M4 in iPad first but I think this is an anomaly due to the emergence and popularity of AI. It will allow Apple to showcase AI features in the best Tablet with OLED and M4 which should sell a lot of iPad Pro's.

If Apple succeeds with a decent AI assistant and showcases them with these new iPads and the speed of M4 it will also boost sales of new laptops. Apple's goal is to have a yearly chip release and possibly even faster as it boosts sales of new devices as it makes devices age faster since the tech is evolving much faster generation over generation.

1k for the 11" Oled base model seems reasonable to me. Upgrades are probably crazy prohibitively expensive but this seems like the iPad we have all been waiting for. Personally all the crying about running MacOS on an iPad is useless. I would rather have a way over powered device than an underpowered one and I know m4 is like nuclear option for an iPad relative to iPadOS but again it just improves the overall experience and allows Apple a ton of headroom for future updates making the iPad possibly run better for longer which is a benefit for everyone. I don't ever see a tablet ever replacing a laptop so I think Apple's strategy is sound. I think the usefulness of an M4 iPad could certainly be questioned when M1 is still overkill for iPadOS. But again if you have an older iPad and are looking to buy a new one the extra base cost is going to pause a lot of people but Apple has provided enough extra hardware features the cost seems justified.

Hope in that thin aluminum will not get another bend gate
Even a thick bezel will bend when you are in a car crash on the expressway. It still works, and thankfully the bent battery hasn't exploded yet!
And still gimped with iPadOS...
I've never seen any evidence of this.

The iPad has never had a silicon problem, except maybe the first gen since it was rather RAM constrained. It's always had a software problem. And Apple doesn't seem interested in solving that problem.
What would be that "software problem"?
And do you own an iPad...and which one?
LOL. I posted several times that no way they would launch the M4 now. Aaaaaaaaand HERE IT IS !!!
Surprise!
Come to Daddy. Only concern is “bendgate” with How thin it is.
So wait 6 months before you buy. How is this a "concern"? Wait 6 months and then just don't buy it.
So much power yet we can don’t much outside of the typical iPad stuff.
I use some apps that work very nicely with it. The biggest problem is that the iPad will always be limited in its use-cases because so much software is subscription only.
Don’t even have a terminal or a decent file system.
Why do we need a terminal? And the file system works fine enough on my 2021 iPad Pro.
The thing keeping me from spending a ton on another iPad is that I just can't load my software on there. There's no Superior Drummer for iPadOS. While some of that's been alleviated with having Logic Pro (and FCP) now on there, it's still an issue for me.
There are TWO reasons why I won't get Logic for iPad: Subscription, and no way to load and use 3rd party VST instruments and effects.
Oh cool, so now my M3 Pro MacBook Pro won’t be getting most of the new AI features announced in June because it’s already too weak and too old for that after half a year 🤪
Come on, you KNEW you'd be taking a chance on planned obsolescence the moment you decided to buy any iPad that didn't say "AI" all over the box.
So no thinner bezels?
Not for you.
If the iPad Pro is so thin and light that that’s a major selling point… why are we still using the iPad Air moniker for the lower model? Their naming scheme is just silly at this point.
This is an excellent point! "Air" is the THICKER model of the two!
It could have edge to edge display and the thin bezel gang would still not be pleased
It could have an image that extends with full color and full touch 2 inches BEYOND the edge, and with full super-double-extra-HDMI-OLED even visible on the BACK of the unit, and people would still complain about the bezel. And bending. And iPad OS. And bending.
Nice hardware but … with the crippled OS currently running on an iPad, what use is this?
What the hell, what is "crippled OS"? So when are you buying yours?

So, the new iPad Pros are just like MacBook Airs but:

- Have a better CPU.
- Have a better OLED screen,
- which is also tactile
- and supports Apple Pencil
- and has a nanotextured option.
- Have FaceID, which MBAirs don't.
- Have a good quality back-side camera with flash and LiDAR, which MBAirs don't.
- Have a cellular option, which... well, you get the idea.
- Can be attached to a Macbook-class keyboard+touchpad OR not.
- Have the same base RAM and SSD as a MBAir and can get to 16GB/2TB.
- Support an external screen.
- Are very quite similar in price to a MBAir, despite all the above.

I'm probably missing some features here or there but... what is Apple waiting for to give users an option to use a full-fledged MacOS on iPad Pros? If anything, they are BETTER than MBAirs at almost everything when you add a Magic Keyboard. Not running the MacOS interface when attached to a keyboard and trackpad has been just a marketing decision for some time now, but this time it's more obvious than ever that a new iPad Pro is a better computer than a Macbook Air, all around.

Maybe that's what's coming at WWDC? (One can dream).

So I just priced one out with all the bells and whistles, plus pro pencil, pro keyboard, 2 TB memory, and 5G. Just under $3,100 for all that stuff, not including AppleCare.

I'll probably order one in June or July. By that time, we'll have heard if there are any production problems or notable bugs.

I'll order sooner if my bent 2021 unit flames out before then.

I probably won't order the Apple keyboard, especially if Logitech or other accessory makers can offer a case with a keyboard that includes some sort of a retention mechanism to keep the Apple Pencil from flying off during car accidents. The magnet is nice, but not strong enough to hold on during a car accident.

Yes, that's my new benchmark.

If the M4 iPad Pro could run MacOS I would buy one in a heart beat. I could then run my go to photo editing software on both.

So no thinner bezels?

Thankfully, there's still some semblance of bezel.

Besides novelty, what's a significant functional benefit of "zero" or as small as possible bezels?

Whether in terms of handling the iPad or using a case/protector, zero bezels makes as much sense as filling a hot bowl of soup to the very top edge of the bowl. Carrying it across the room to the table or just dipping in that first spoonful is so much fun.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Honest question: how many people were overloading the M2 processors in their old iPad Pros? Does a faster M4 actually solve (or even improve) anything?
You must not have watched the event video. The double-OLED screen needs the added processing power of the M4 chip.
Fair point, but they have a solution for that already: Camera continuity. On my mac when I want to scan a doc it will fire up the phone *in the photo app* without me needing to do anything at all. It's brilliant. No reason the iPad couldn't do that too... I mean, the code's already 95% written.
I didn't know we have camera continuity. That's awesome if true. I'll be researching that this week!
Ah damn, now I want to return my MBP and wait it out for the M4 version...

Cue the 'if you wait, you'll wait forever' replies
"If you wait, you'll wait forever."

You're welcome. But it's obviously not true. I waited before buying an MBP, and it turns out I only waited until Apple started taking the platform seriously. So I only waited 10 years or so.
Did the specs on the iPad Pro I intend to buy and it comes out at $2,200.00. That is one spendy iPad.
Mine will be $3100 before tax and Applecare. I plan to use some of my NVDA money on it. That's the best way to buy something...use money you earned from something else. Because AAPL has been a terrible buy lately.

You make some good observations, thank you. But I really DON'T want to have a dual-boot iPad. Or Mac. Yuck!
The main downside is that it (the dimpled screen) isn't an option until you hit 1TB. Seems like the way to go if you step up, but until we see some reviews, we won't know for sure.
I agree. I'll pop some popcorn later this month and watch the review videos on it before I decide which one to order for mine.
I foresee that there is going to be an entire generation of folks that will not have touched a Mac at all.

The iPad offers a different way of being productive, not a lesser one.
Thank you; that's a really good way to phrase it.
Not going to be. There already is (an entire generation of folks that have not touched a Mac).
Until they need to get a real job with real deliverables. Sure, there are some companies that will let you use an iPad for your working environment. But the great majority will use Windows machines or Macs. And it's because that's what they know how to support.
Yes…they are

They are simply stealing money from easy marks and gaslighting the rest of us
Well THANK YOU for calling me an "easy mark". At least I'm supposedly not being gaslit.
If the M4 iPad Pro could run MacOS I would buy one in a heart beat. I could then run my go to photo editing software on both.
This right here is the only good reason I've heard for wanting iPad to run MacOS. Nobody else gives an example, they just say "bad OS" or "software problems". I don't know what any of that means!

I NEED a bezel. It doesn't need to be 4" wide, but it should be there. Way way too often, I pick up my 2021 iPad and my fingers activate something on the screen, completely unintended. It's painfully inelegant and always requires that I do something additional to cancel out some horrible thing that almost happened when I tried to pick up my iPad.
