Just got offered a part-time position to start in the November class. I'm 30 years old and really need a full-time position to stay happy. How quickly does one move up from PT to FT?

That totally depends on business needs and your abilities as an advisor. If you've got awesome stats you might be able to pull it off in 6 months or so. The official answer though is that there's a minimum of one year in position before you can move to something else.

You should be able to make Tier 2 in 4 to 6 months... there is no part time in Tier 2.

Yeah..... moving up quickly is the only thing that has me considering it. I figure training would = 40 hours a week, then the holiday rush would = 40 hours a week at least through January. I'd have 2 months to post awesome stats, then maybe have 2 months of PT hours before being able to move up. I'm currently a Tier 2 tech for Avast! Total Support, which sounds alot like Tier 2 for AHA (remoting in to machines to fix issues that tier 1 passes up). I'm a little worried about temporarily stepping down to potentially move up in the long run is all.

Equipment related question because it is too late for me to call ATT, but if anyone went through them, did they provide a home phone for you to use? Or does Apple supply that since they give us headsets?

Mostly asking so I know what to get tomorrow while I am out and about.

what happens if you miss a day of training? are you automatically fired?

Do not miss any days of training. You will be left way behind, and even though the tests are "open book" missing a day will hamper you. It's also not advisable at any time, especially during training. Your work habits are highly scrutinized, and any reasons other than equipment failure are unacceptable to Apple. You may not be fired for a single episode but attendance is critical.

Given that, it's up to your Trainers.

I'm curious. Why switch from what you're doing? Does the job suck? Lousy pay? You want to work at Apple? You may be taking a worthwhile risk or you may end up regretting your decision. Hard to say. I can tell you that nowadays all you have to do is suit up and show up and you'll make Tier 2. That may change a couple of months after iOS 7 comes out but as it stands... If you can walk and talk, you can make Tier 2 in short order... metrics be damned.

You will be provided with a phone and all of the headset equipment that you'll need to do your job.

Active listening & participation are key factors to not being released.
Be honest with yourself, the trainers, and your manager.
Do not continue pestering the trainers for information they have provided multiple times... unless the information they provided has not shown to be accurate, or not working as stated.
Take notes.
You will need them.

Benefits and tenure mostly. I'm a contractor currently, which means no benefits (although the pay is about the same) and no tenure with the company. It took my supervisor two years to be brought into the company, with metrics similar to mine currently. I would rather have the peace of mind that comes with being an employee on day one rather than hoping to become an employee.

That said, I don't want to accept the PT position if it does really wind up being PT for 6 months, and then burn my bridge with Apple.

If you're a contractor then it might be worth your while to make the jump to Apple. I guess it would boil down to how much you enjoy your current job, the healthcare coverage and whether or not you can make it up to 6 months at 20 hours a week. From what I've seen you really have to have bad stats to not make Tier 2 in 4 or 5 months. There are people with 3 months in that are getting pushed to T2 because they need as many experienced bodies they can get their hands on for the iOS 7 release and the late Oct. to early Jan. iPhone/iPod/iPad buying madness.

I started June 10th and I am currently in the T2 apprenticeship program. To be honest you can move into different positions as fast or as slow as you want within reason, and assuming that business needs align.

Thanks a lot for the information. I just called and accepted the part-time position. I figure the training and the holiday rush should keep me FT through January, and hopefully by then my stats look good enough to move up to a permanent FT/Tier 2 position.

Does apple check for just check for criminal and employment on their background checks?

I went to college out of the USA(I am a us citizen and lived here my whole life minus my college years) and am nervous if they do check for my college, they won't be able to identify unless they call the university I went to

Here
Got my offer call this afternoon! Offered more than I was told throughout the interview process. Start training on Sept. 23rd.

My background check didn't have anything in it dealing with my education itself, but they did run a criminal check in the city the school is located.

Ok cool. I can verify my degree from the school I graduated from no problem but was just curious if they would see I graduated from a university in Brasil.

I appreciate your response

I disagree with this part. Pester, ask as many questions as you want. It doesn't matter if they think you're stupid or the entire team for that matter. What it all boils down to are passing those tests. Do everything you can including asking questions. After you pass you would really have to do something crazy in order to get fired.

If you have to continue to ask the same question over and over or pester the trainer to go over the same information over and over, just to pass a test, are you really right for the job.
