Strangely my iPad Air is shipping "Express," whereas iPhone Pro is shipping "Standard." I wonder if this indicates that they're not both shipping from China. I also wonder if there's a bigger possibility that the Air will be delivered early. I know their logistics are on point in keeping the phones from being delivered before Friday, but maybe we could have early Airs to keep us entertained!

I doubt that because Apple wants to make sure consumers receive the iPhones first because of A14 chip. So, that’s why iPhone and Newer iPad is being delivered same exact day.

Of course they have inventory the second it's announced, but could you image the pandemonium if they allowed you to order right then, the TINY amount of stock would be gone in a blink of an eye, and people would have to wait a lot longer than a week of preorder to get a phone. It's all about pleasing the highest number of customers at once as possible.
That's how I see it too. Imagine if Apple said they would start pre-orders right after the announcement like the apple watch 6. It would be a mess.

My XS Max is already paid off and unlocked. I don't want the AT&T installment agreement on the new phone though.
Sorry I wasn’t clear! If your old phone is paid off, you can pre-order before the pre-order with Apple so it should be in your cart and you just hit buy on launch day. I couldn’t do it because I still have an installment agreement.

I noticed the same thing with my orders. My guess is the iPad will ship from my local Apple Store and the iPhone will ship from China. My iPhone accessories are delivering tomorrow from FedEx and say standard shipping so I assume they are shipping from Rialto CA where Apple has a distribution center. I'll know on Thursday if the shipping notice for the Air shows it being picked up from Brea CA, my local store.

Can you trade in a phone on an installment? If not, I may have to reevaluate trading in my XR that is installment free for my Fold 2 and use it on one of my iPhones I ordered. I do have other iPhones to trade in but I won’t part with one of my iPhone X, XS MAX and 11 Pro Max

Was it two years ago when a lot of our phones went on that Tour of Asia?
I specifically remember it for the iPhone X launch but I'm sure it happened for others as well. I think they were in China like the day before the scheduled delivery. Made a lot of people nervous for really no reason. haha

yeah, I remember mine and a bunch of others doing something like sitting in China, then in Korea, back to China, then to Japan, or some such.

I don’t recall having my iPhone purchase go to “Preparing for shipment” so soon after ordering. Has this been common over the past couple of years? I haven’t ordered on launch day in years.

it does seem quicker than usual. Mine just went to Preparing to Ship.Every year I have the vain and unrealistic hope that our iPhones will arrive before launch day. ?

My bet is that they will ship from from both US and China warehouses.

Yes. That is very likely. The ones that are changing to preparing for shipment are likely coming from China. A couple years ago, mine was stuck on Processing all week and didn't change to Preparing for Shipment until Thursday, when all of a sudden it shipped from Louisville overnight. Mine just changed to preparing for shipment so I get to play the flight tracking game this year!

Usually it goes to PFS on the same day as pre-order day. Mine's also in PFS and I placed it order right when the apple store app opened.
