My tracking info showed up in UPS My Choice overnight (woohoo!) and I got my request put in to have the phone held at my local UPS CC. It's the first time I've ever had the phone held for me to pick up, so I'm super anxious about it all working smoothly! I'm putting a lot of faith in all of the positive comments I've read from you veterans who do it this way every year; don't let me down!! 
In other news, iOS 12 drops today.
Yeah, Apple usually changes to "Shipped" once the phone is in the U.S hub. (Wed/Thurs)
I’ve never had an iPhone, or any other package for that matter, held before. Do I do it on the website or go to the UPS hub near me and ask them to do it?
I don’t want this sitting out all day. Especially when my local UPS hub is in the city I work.
Me, ordered the T-Mobile version a few minutes after 12 PDT. No charge on credit card, no updates.

Yeah, we are all still at Preparing to Ship. Give or take, Wednesday or Thursday, you'll see the status change to "Shipped". That has always been to case for every order. During the Preparing for Shipment stage, typically your labels are created and your phone is being boxed, so you can still find tracking number even before phone your phone ships.
In the app you click the tracking number > delivery change. You find the correct CC (Customer Center). In which is associated with your address that handles your packages..
Click Change delivery and then Pick up my package at a UPS facility. And then pick up your hub and confirm
This is the first year I've requested to pick up my package at the Hub, but from all the comments I've read it seems to be a very easy process. (fingers crossed) You need to sign up for the free UPS My Choice account and you will then be given an option to request to change your Delivery Method to have it held for you at a location of your choice.
From what I understand, it's pretty critical that you select your UPS Customer Center (hub) which is the location that your packages are initially delivered before being put on a truck. If you choose anything else, then it will likely delay your package by at least a day because it has to go on a truck and then be delivered to the holding location...the same process it goes through to get to your house. The only time I would think that would be a better option is if you can't be home to sign for it and you don't care if you might not be able to pick up your phone until Saturday/Monday.
I ordered my wife a Gold 256 GB XS from the apple app and this was the first time not going directly through att... Also its the first time I bought the phone outright. I have a question that hopefully someone in here can answer for me though. When ordering through apple do they not pull the money until shipment? I got confirmation of the order, the phone is supposed to be delivered on friday but I still have the money in my account. Thank you!

Faster yes, easy no. I waited 2h to get my phone at the hub last year. There is a truck that goes back and forth to the warehouse. Have to deal with ticked off ups employees that hate their job... the whole nine yards
I've got the 2:10 AM Arrival scan on my tracking. Was looking to set it up for pick up at my local CC this morning but it appears the CC is not an option for me this year. It just doesn't show up on the list. So now I am debating sending it to a local UPS store but I am wondering if anyone has experience with that. Sometimes I think I've seen that it delays your shipment date by a day. Anyone with experience?
Ugh! Hope it's not that bad at my local hub! I live in a relatively low population area and plan to be there when they open at 8am...maybe I'll beat the crowds!
Easiest way (at least for me) is through the UPS app, login with your MyChoice credentials and you should see the shipment show up (assuming you’ve already setup and verified your shipping address and name(s) with UPS. From there you can select and request a change like hold at access point, change delivery day, etc. good luck!
