Why make the point about others and a confusing lineup then?

It doesn't come over that way

And yet what? Apples bottom line is not a measure of how many customers they have pissed off. It just shows they have enough customers that like the iPhone. I could say that 100% of people breathing air will die, that doesn't mean that air is dangerous.

And yet, Apple is doing just fine - and their customer base has grown pretty drastically since 2009 (despite the customers they've "pissed" off).

*sigh* I should learn that a lot of forum members don't respond well to logic.

The argument regarding Apple offering too many offerings vs. not enough is to simply point out the catch-22 that Apple is in. They offer a lot of options, it's too many. Not a lot of options, it's not enough. Right now they do have a lot of options, just not the option YOU want.

This place is already an echo chamber filled with an absurd amount of pessimism. I'm just trying to add a bit of logic to it all - though failing at it at the moment.
Look up echo chamber and logic.
You are coming in to a part of a thread where people were talking about their dismay at Apple taking away a phone size that they liked. Apple are not in a catch 22, that is something you have made up.
For those that say the lineup is too confusing, it is simple, ditch all yesterdays phones and make 3-4 different screen sizes. Then they only have 4 phones to sell rather than 8 or what ever the current lineup is.
As for me, I don't want an SE sized phone. I just don't think Apple should be more concerned about its bottom line than its customers.

It isn't about too many or too few offerings, it is about differentiation.

Apple's current lineup is not well differentiated. A smaller version of the iPhone Xr for example would be a good differentiation.

I suppose - though it seems pretty obvious to me based on the name. The X is newer than the 8, which is newer than the 7. The Plus is bigger than the none plus, etc.

If anything the iPhone SE was the most "confusing" item in the lineup - the name itself did nothing to explain what it was in comparison to the other phones.

As did Microsoft's installed base in the 2000s, yet it is pretty well accepted that Windows in that period was not fantastic.

Now you are making things up.

Tell me from the names what the difference between an XS, XR and SE is?

The XS is the 7
The XS Max is the 7+
The XR is the 5C
Apple is changing the names which is confusing in itself.

Yes, and your point?

I suggest you read elsewhere on this forums, as well as other places, people are constantly complaining about Apple offering too many or too few choices - it is far from something I made it (why would I??)

Where is your proof that Apple is more concerned about its bottom line that its customers. How does eliminating the SE prove this in anyway shape or form?

My point is that Apple is doing just fine...I thought that was obvious. Stop acting like your outrage is shared by everyone.

Yes the SE had a stupid name. It should have been Mini and I've said that for a long time.

iPhone Xr is confusing. What does R stat for? Its not a very good product name.

Having the old models around is confusing, especially the 7 and 8 being so similar. Or when you look at things like the 7+ having dual cameras but the Xr not having dual cameras despite the 7+ being cheaper. Or the 7 and 8 having 3D Touch and the Xr not, yet the 7 and 8 are cheaper.

Seriously? The S line has been around since the iPhone 3GS. Most people understand what the S in the name is. I do agree the XR is an odd choice...but the X at least indicates it's design styling compared to previous models.

Jumped off the cliff this evening and bought iPhone SE from eBay. Hopefully not a scam. Seller had 20,000 ratings and about 99% approval. Noticed positive ratings for other people who bought iPhone SE recently.

My iPhone 6 still works very well and I replaced the battery about 6 months ago. Figure between the two of these phones I'm good to go for a long time. My dream phone is a non-bezel version of the SE. Unfortunately seems we will never get that one.

Would have been a lot better just having the iPhone XS (smaller Xr), iPhone XS + (Current Xr), iPhone XS Pro (Current Xs ) and iPhone XS Pro + (XS Max). Then maybe the iPhone 7 or 8 as their cheap offering.

They keep the old models around because they're the lower priced options...everyone can tell that X is newer than 8 which is newer than 7, that really isn't complicated at all.

You do have a point about the Xr not having 3D Touch vs all the other models (despite costing more). It was obviously a cost saving measure, but trying to explain the difference b/w haptic touch and 3D Touch is going to be confusing for most people. Then again, I could see most people not really caring. Those of us on these forums are not most users.

My proof? Look at all the podcasts, sites, forums out there you will see that Apple is such a polarizing company.
Why do you think that is? Because they do things that go against the grain.

As for the SE, I see lots of people complaining about wanting a smaller phone.
Where is your proof that people don't want varying sizes of phone?

Outrage? Hardly, I call it like I see it.
Why take away a headphone jack that those with wired headphones like.
Why take away Aperture and SD card slot that photographers like
I could go on.

Where is your proof that Apple doesn't annoy customers (I was going to write where is your proof that Apple doesn't do things that customers don't like, but didn't like the double negative so going with annoy instead. You seem to think piss off is too strong so will just go with annoy instead)

I work with non tech people every day and this sort of lineup is confusing to people. The sheer range of devices + their capacities, then paired with the fact that the more expensive phones don't necessarily have features that the cheaper phones have is confusing.

I understand why the old models are around, but there are two many of them, with too little differentiation. Obviously people can understand the naming, but when they go to choose it becomes confusing, because it becomes hard to tell the difference in features.

They keep the old models around as a way to offer lower priced models without cannibalising sales of the more expensive models. Rather than coming out with new tech at different price points.

Windows there pretty much aren’t any great alternatives. iOS and Mac there are alternatives. So the analogy doesn’t quite hold.

I'd argue that for people stuck in the iOS ecosystem there aren't any alternatives either. If you want a device that will work with your other Apple devices, you have to buy an iOS device.

... I just don't think Apple should be more concerned about its bottom line than its customers...
Many don’t understand apple’s customers and bottom line are the same thing. The reason the bottom line is what it is, is because Apple is customer focused. Even if you personally don’t like Apple.

Tech forums and podcasts are hardly an accurate cross-section of Apple users.

With that being said, Apple has pretty much ALWAYS pissed off its customers. It's like people forget when Apple removed the floppy drive from the first iMac - and provided zero alternatives (the CD drive was read-only). Or when Apple eliminated the Classic environment in OS X - even though a lot of popular programs hadn't been upgraded to OS X, which left many people in a lurch. Or when Apple eliminated the optical drives from all their machines, and USB flash drives or digital content was far from ubiquitous. Or when Apple got rid of iDisk years before iCloud Drive came in to replace it.

Apple making controversial decisions is pretty much par for the course.

In 2018 there are plenty of choices. Nobody should be “stuck”.

Just as there are plenty of Operating System choices.

If I want a phone that continues to allow me to hand off between my Mac and iPad, work with my Apple Watch, use iCloud Drive, forward texts to my Mac and work seamlessly with iCloud, I have to use an iPhone.

Plenty of people are in this situation, where they require an iPhone due to the ecosystem, which means that they'll make compromise and buy a product that they aren't completely satisfied with.

Now you're just complaining to complain.

If Apple were to release a brand new $400 iPhone, it would probably look very similar to an iPhone 7...so why
reinvent the wheel?

To an extent, yes, I do agree with all the positive things that Apple does for its customers and they do have an amazing line up of products. But I do see a change in Apple and yes this is not hurting the bottom line yet and who knows might never affect the bottom line. But people would have to agree that Apple is a polarizing company. There is a reason behind this and it comes down to how Apple treats its customers. Most Apple fans have rose coloured glasses and don't see it.
I used to see Apple through rose coloured glasses.

Apple can never make a product every person is fully satisfied with. Even if they offered every single option in the world, someone would be upset. So they offer the options that MOST people like.
