The same supposed "artificial slowdown" that people were claiming in the early iOS 10.0 days only to then praise the later iOS 10 updates and treat the final 10.3.3 version as some example of perfection?

iOS 10 was always fine for me. It’s probably different users on different generations of iPhone.

One phone is newer and has a faster hardware than the other one... pretty simple.

Except it’s a basic animation that’s been around since iOS 7. It’s not taxing and shouldn’t have a delay when performing it, just as it didn’t on the iPhone 4S.

At best it’s unbelievably lazy programming. At worst it’s deliberate slow down.

Don't be disingenuous. You know full well that a .0 release has been slower than a .2 or .3 release from iOS 7 onwards, hence the many, many threads we've had on MacRumors throughout the years.

Apple continues this cycle of releasing an unoptimized version of iOS simply so they can meet their hardware deadlines. Scott Forstall is sorely missed. Maybe not for his UI choices, but his attention and passion for UX is still sadly unrivaled at Apple today.

let's quote your full sentence, shall we? "Apple is known for releasing a crappy, unoptimized version of iOS"... so, again, known by who? you? 12 people on the macrumors forum?? ios11 was running great on my SE (i just updated to .0.1)...

opinions (and anecdotal 'evidence') are no substitution for facts).

The only way Apple would be able to deliberately slow down older phones would be through software. I suspect someone would discover the code eventually. No?

I have a simple explanation why so many people believe Apple deliberately slows down their older phones.

First, the new phone (whatever the latest version may be) comes pre-loaded with the latest iOS. It comes with a fresh install and is probably indexed and free from third party apps. Plus, no doubt the latest iOS is optimized to perform best on the latest hardware.

On the other hand, you have users who update their older hardware after the new iOS is released. In the hours and days after the update, the device is indexed, third party apps get updated and patched and user data is reconfigured. That is why we see a perceived slow down. The processor is busy. The battery drains. The whole nine yards. It's possible some parts of the iOS are not as well optimized, but I don't believe for a minute that there is a deleverage effort on Apple's part.

Last thing and possibly best evidence to dispel the myth. Apple continues to sell older models. I haven't seen any complaints about slow downs from those who buy a new iPhone 6S now. Same hardware, therefore it should have same problems. Does't seem to be the case.

How? Apple's proprietary layers are locked safe. Nobody has access to that level of code except them.

Even if we did decompile it, it would still take forever to find something. Hell, it was only a few weeks ago that somebody noticed that the original Zork's inventory system used a random number generator: https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/08/zork-source-code-is-a-master-class-in-game-developer-trolling/

Slightly different thing here, but if it means anything, the iPod Touch 5g on iOS 7 is much faster than on iOS 9. I tested this myself on the same device within minutes of each other by dual booting. The iOS 9 install was fresh and let go for a week, and the iOS 7 install I used instantly, which is even faster now.

There’s truth to the latest iOS slowing down older devices, for multiple versions anyways. I don’t think apple is meaning to do that though.

There is no artificial slow down. Find me a line of code that proves this. I don't know how some of you use your phones but there shouldn't be any difference between a 7 or 8 plus.

This is what I would love to see. Someone find me the line of code in iOS 11 that directs older devices to "slow down" and has somehow managed to escape the attention of literally millions of developers all these years. Until then, this is all just anecdotal BS.

Or... Apple could simply stop selling older model phones on the day a new iPhone is released. Duhhhh!!!

But have fun mixing your meds.

you mean, the very day of release, all previous model phones are pulled off the market? so, for example, someone who wants an SE, or a 6S, can't buy one? what exactly does that solve? and what happens to all the previous-model phones in the wild? landfill?? not a logical or reasonable idea.

To force people buy new iPhone. Instead wasting time writing magic code to slow down older phones.

code is never magic, and, because there are so many variables (even between the 8, and the X, for example), it's reasonable & logical for apple to support older phones... up to a point.

It’s a magic trick, until someone finds the code that purposely slows down the iPhone.

Is Santa real too?

Good for you.

Go on any social media website and the panorama is quite different. Doesn't matter if it's anecdotal evidence -- it's more than just a bunch of people.

I'm now on 10.3.3 and enjoying good performance again. Even if iOS 11 runs well on an SE, it's still full of bugs.

all OS's are full of bugs. and making absolute statements based on anecdotal 'evidence' from social media websites is, at best, a terriying way to live. let's say it is more than a bunch of people with an issue; what percentage of ios users are we talking about: dozens? millions?

if you have a problem, this is a great forum to discuss, get help. if you have a theory... that's cool too, as long as you remember: it's a theory...

Read the title of the topic.

yeah, i... don't see any mention of magic there. or santa. but i do see that 73% of voters think the GM is as good or better than the betas. and, to be fair, it's 105 people. 105. how many people use iphones? so, nothing's perfect, especially paranoia and polls at this level.

All I’m saying, is that there is no factual evidence that Apple is slowing down iPhones on purpose.
There is no smoke or mirrors.

Then you should state that clearly (because you're correct), and leave out the rest of the santa and magic nonsense. I agree with your post (quoted), but the nonsensical references are cloying.

Apple conspiracy, flat earth + Santa. Thought it was obvious. Oh well. I was being a goof trying to loosen up the tension in this thread.

I saw Apple Maps van today in my area. So that was cool.

OK...hoping this is the right place to post this...my wife and I are really not in a hurry to move away from our two 5s iPhones.
10.3.3 is working OK for us. I could think of a few reasons to go to 11.1...but what is the wisdom of the group here? Will we have slowdowns? Will our phones go up in flames? Will I lose my hair (oops, too late!)?

you're asking this on a thread that has issues with ios11? probably the wrong place to expect any objectivity. best to do a search ON this specific forum, ie "ios 11 5s". or start a thread. or scan thru similar posts. or buy a toupee?....
