Sure, anything with rechargeable batteries has this problem when the battery starts to degrade. But I personally couldn't go back to wired headphones/earphones now. It's just so much more freeing not to have to worry about the cable -- I can listen to music from my computer in my office while making coffee in the kitchen.

Totally agree on convenience but unlike other rechargeables (e.g., iPad), audio devices are unusable while charging. My wife's Air Pods have become useless with their now short charge life and they aren't so cheap as to consider them disposables.

Yeah. I've ended up with two sets of earbuds, using one while the other is charging. It's a trade-off between one set of convenience and another, for sure.

After 30 years with mac and about 10 with iPad I am switching to iPad as much as I can. Mac Ventura and the most recent OS releases are just too buggy for me, constant problems and freezes, no ideas why (I run a very clean system) . At least the iPad is simpler and less prone to crashes and freezes and when they do occur it is usually simple to recover. As portable too, the screen is really nice as is the SQ, on pro models anyway.

Maybe I’m in the minority here as i am retired and no longer a power user but I just can’t be bothered tackling nonsense issue with the mac anymore and will try to find workarounds on iPad where I can, my biggest concern is Apple making it more like a Mac. Meanwhile am looking fwd to continual if slow progress on the os and 3rd party apps.
Unstable system can happen on both Mac and iPad / iPhone. If stability is highest priority (include myself), would better go with 1-version behind. In my case, for Mac, I am using Monterey instead of Ventura. It’s solid and still compatible with all apps and devices.

Personally the iPad Pro is not a Mac replacement nor a iPhone replacement. It doesn't do well as a full fledged Mac and it doesn't do well as just a tablet at least not for the cost.

I have argued many times the entire "Pro" category for a lot of Apple products is just marketing and a bit of a joke. The only place Pro deserves to named is on a Mac where Professionals use a Mac for professional tasks and workloads that is very different from the average consumer.

Pro phones are also a bit of a joke but with YouTube and other people using their phone for professional recording and photos along with the speed needed to transfer files etc. I can see it a little more as a valid category.

For an iPad I see the Pro as simply a waste of money. It would be nice for iPads to all have Promotion and OLED screens or but I really can't see any use case where it is needed and will work better than a MacBook Air?

I have a 5th gen iPad Air and I absolutely love it. Sure I would like quad speakers and Pro Motion or even mini led if the blooming is not too bad. But I can't justify spending the extra money for the better features when most of what I do with a tablet is play games, check emails, texts, browse the web, and stream video. All serious work is done on my Mac.

But for doing the things I do with a tablet the 5th gen iPad is amazing. It is blazing fast with the M1 chip and 8gb ram. The stereo speakers get very loud and have rich bass. The screen is beautiful even if it is locked to 60hz.

Then there are the much more fun color options on my iPad Air vs the kind of dated space grey and silver on the iPad Pro.

Honestly I think the problem is that a tablet no matter how powerful or what accessories it has will be an award compromise over laptop for serious use. I mean the weight and footprint of an iPad Pro with keyboard is really close to a MacBook Air but the Air is so much more useful. I have used Windows 2 in One tablets like Surface and while they are fun for a while the same compromises come up.

In my personal opinion Apple should focus on what a tablet is really designed and optimized for which is not Professional use. Make a great tablet with the M series chips. Increase the battery life. Make the touchscreens better and offer promotion across the line. They should get rid of the base model iPad and just offer an air but just call it iPad and have an iPad ultra. Ultra makes more sense as it would be just a better version of an iPad with better specs. Offer the iPad at $499 and ultra at $699 and go up according to storage and add ons.

Apple should not be selling a non laminated display in 2023. Apple should make the iPad a great tablet and not put the "Pro" expectation on it because it will never be a Pro device. It can be a great and fun tablet as a regular iPad and an Ultra for those that want the best iPad experience. Just two devices and maybe a mini starting at $399. So iPad mini iPad, and iPad Ultra. The mini should have the latest a series chip available and get updated on a yearly cadence. The iPad should just like the air have the second latest m series chip and the Ultra the latest m series chip. You could also have an iPad 11" and iPad 13" same specs. Have and iPad Ultra 11" and iPad Ultra 14" same specs. Then people could have an iPad for their needs. The people who buy the Ultra would be the same who buy the Pro's but it would end the constant and never ending demands for Mac OS on an iPad. It would define the iPad as just an iPad and not a Mac replacement because it will never be one. Apple got into trouble trying to sell an iPad as a Surface Pro. Let Windows be Windows and let Apple be Apple.

Just my 2 cents.

I love my iPad (an iPad Mini 6). But alas, people simply have to realize: iPads (and tablets in general) are not for everyone.

iPads (tablets) are an in-between product.... cursed to be trapped in between 2 major categories that are massively embraced: fully powerful Macs/PCs and fully mobile (pocketable) smartphones.

The iPads (tablets) are forever trapped in between those 2 categories, and as such, iPads will never be embraced as fully as either of those 2 massive categories.

That's just the reality of things.

I have to honestly agree with you. I don’t know if they’re going to abandon it, but I do feel they have forgotten it in a lot of different ways. We should’ve already had a MagSafe on the back or some type of inductive charging.

Question: Is Apple now too scared to risk a bold innovation? I ask as well where is the innovation of Apple under Steve Jobs, the Apple of Firewire, and bold apps like final cut pro, logic pro, Aperture? The bold and brave Apple of iphone 1, ipad 1st gen, of the App Store? They have either lost the keys to the innovation potion, or just feel no need to innovate... Just try at least, Apple will not go into Chapter 11 over an ipad with an SD card slot... That is one scenario that will not occur.. So at least try...

Based on a the same evidence you could argue Apple has given up on the iPhone as well. iOS hasn't changed much in years (despite needing a major refurb) and they've been coasting the hardware for years whilst rivals make leaps and bounds in value and features. They are on on top and see no value in changing what works.

absolutely. I am one who does not want Bluetooth earbuds in my ears and so I prefer the over the ear wired headphones. But Apple made air pods and wanted you to buy them so they took away the 3.5 mm headphone jack and called it courage. So what that means is that I have to use an adapter to use my headphones and cannot charge at the same time. The iPad, at least the pro, needs either the 3.5 mm headphone jack or an additional USB port. At the price these pros cost, an additional USB should have been a no-brainer.
You could use wireless charging.

I honestly think they've just gotten fat and lazy.

The gulf in value between the base iPhone and, say the S23 or the Pixel 7 tells you everything you need to know.

Innovation is coming, but not where you want it. It's the new Apple reality headset.

Of course there were also smartphones and tablet computers prior to Apple making them, same of course also goes for the iPod that was by far not the first mp3 player.

yeah the iPhone and iPad were improved concepts of cell phones and tablets that existed already before them, same thing could happen with the headset. But I am sure you know better than Apple what's best and Apple should listen to you instead... 😅

Everyone had tried laptops, including Apple themselves with the MacPortable. The PowerBook 100 wasn’t close to being the first laptop; however, one of the ways Apple innovated that product category was by moving the keyboard back towards the screen so they could have palmrests and a centered trackball.

I’m a professional photographer I use an iPad for professional work (I make money using the device). So you’re spouting a lot of nonsense simply based in opinion and your own use case. What it’s called makes absolutely no difference. It’s true that it’s marketing, but it’s also completely able to dominate in certain extremely professional workflows. So..?

Apple didn’t invent phones nor tablets. They just did them better. Stop trying to rewrite history.

Getting AR right will absolutely create a new ‘must have’ category. I don’t think ski goggle type masks will do it, but normal eyeglasses / sunglasses or contact lenses certainly will. If apple beats everyone else to the market with this type of product then you’ll be eating your hat.

I doubt you are a professional using the ipad, but anyway, I agree with TechNerd, the ipad should have been in 2 versions, ipad for the kids, and ipad pro for the professionals, with ports, SD card slots, upgrade ready in terms of internal memory, a bit more modular...

What is not in dispute is that Apple did their very best to NOT innovate, the ipad is a joke now, $1700 to over $2000 for the 2TB 16GB RAM 12 inch is insane, no way it is over $100 for apple to produce, if apple sold the 12 inch 16GB RAM 2TB model, with SD card slot and dongle in the box, for $499, they would not take a loss, it would sell in the millions of units, folks would buy plenty..The idea of sell more for less, or sell fewer items for more??? I don't know.

The ipad has not had any development in a decade, it is the same as it was in 2013, zero innovation occurs at Apple, none, all we will see tomorrow is promises and garbage.. Stuff that will tank, like that stupid bluetooth speaker and the round mac pro that was just hopeless... Apple are not trying...

Apple gave up on the ipad after generation 2, that is very obvious, as it has not changed in basic function, it has the same faults as generation 1, and a broken OS... really.. The pro version is not professional standard... however you define that standard...

There is no reason Apple cannot take a bath on the ipad, all companies loose on certain ranges, costco does this on chickens and hot dogs, lossleaders, products you use to get customers into the store, what you loose on hotdogs you gain in toilet paper or pumpkin pies... Apple could triple profit in the selling of add ons, at $499 I would buy 2 ipads... at $2000 none...

"What is not in dispute is that Apple did their very best to NOT innovate, the ipad is a joke now ..." - that's just your opinion - to which you are entitled - not a statement of fact as you make it, as many would dispute that claim.

And disputing the previous poster's claim on his profession is downright rude.

Where is the innovation? What has Apple done to the ipad in a decade? No new features added, no SD card, and it needs expansion, how to transfer media to and from the device? A professional has needs far and above that of the average user, we uses tools in a different way.. Professional level tools should be robust and have options... I think you missed my point entirely. I never said professionals don't use an iPad Pro.

I said that an iPad as a device category is not suited for Professional level work. Of course there are always going to be exceptions to any general statement. I would think digital artists would be the main one. As a photographer I don't see what the iPad does better than your iPhone or Mac? But you do you.

My point was that if Apple made a simple product line and maybe added some of the Pro features across the line, drop the cheapest model and lower the price of the middle iPad and Pro and got rid of the Pro branding they would sell more and people who buy an ultra rather than pro would not have the same expectations that come with a pro device.

In terms of dominate work flows besides the digital art category I don't understand what you mean?

Am I spouting nonsense just because I don't do what you do? I said what I use the iPad for now after trying to use it and other's for more pro level work and it didn't do that great. I didn't say that it was impossible but not really optimized. There is a difference.

The fact you ‘don’t understand what I mean’ and the fact that you don’t see why a phone or a mac isnt good enough for what I do - when you clearly have no idea what that is, even though I told you what it was, is exactly why making generalised statements which are based purely on your own use case and narrow view of what other people do is denounced as spouting nonsense.

The iPad and the Apple Pencil, coupled with various softwares is exactly a robust professional level tool. It’s more robust than most traditional computers, and certainly a great addition to a traditional workflow. Not understanding something doesn’t mean the thing cannot exist it just means you don’t understand it. That’s fine, no one will judge you for that. Showing your ignorance over and over again is a different matter though.

The inclusion of a consumer spec card slot doesn’t necessarily make it more appealing to professionals either.
