Out of all of it the pricing gave everyone a solid punch in the gut. Even on stage the executives seemed to act more muted than usual and they were too scared to show the price of the 256GB X variant. The price and that ancient design rehashed for the fourth time took all the fun out of iPhone releases tbh.

Apple has always sacrificed features to give something that they think we all want. Was not too long ago, they made the phone so thin and light, it would bend in your pocket. To give you the features of the X, we loose finger ID, etc.

I am confident I made the right choice for me and ordered the 8+ SG with 256. The X will be a great phone but I will wait a year to let it mature. I do not need more drama, just a good phone I can depend on.

Have I got this right, the 8 Plus' screen is actually wider than the X's screen? Christ almighty, Apple really has lost the plot. They're now creating phones where some features on phone A are better than the features on phone B and where some features on phone B are better than the features on phone A. Farking hell. I don't need to have 10 certificates in marketing and engineering, and I don't need to have been an Apple executive before, to know that Apple is a ****ing shambles. What are they doing, why have they created this divide? I can accept having two phones where one is either equal to or clearly superior to the other, but when you have two phones in the same year and both have their pros and cons, it's a joke.

IMO the X is a big risk and the 8 and 8 Plus are the safer bets. At least with the 8 or 8 Plus, you know what you're getting, it's a beefed up 7 with a few party tricks. But with the X, you have the hideous cut out at the top, and if what I understand to be the case is true, it has a narrower, albeit longer, screen than the 8 Plus. But the longer screen is counteracted by the cut out at the top. I won't even go into price of the X, just disgusting. And if you want the benefit of fast charging, you gotta buy the accessory, another $70 to set you back. As for the oled screen, 600 nits less than the Note 8. What's the point, honestly?

I have been saying for a long time now that Apple has lost the plot. And I was so hoping that this was the year, more than any other year since Jobs died, that they would prove me wrong. Beliieve me I wanted nothing more than for Apple to prove me wrong. But they're not proving me wrong, they're proving me right, and like I said a few posts above, the very thing that Apple is being stubborn about is the very thing which has enabled Samsung to start gaining an ascendency in the smartphone market.
All Android lacks is a proper tablet and Watch. Get your game on Google and make a Pixel Watch and Tablet. Apple will never see my money again.

It really aggravates me that great affordable (well relative to the X anyway) phones like the Google Pixel and Galaxy Note 8 are out with the same bezelless design and screen technology as the X and Apple Watch and an iPad pulls me back in to spend 1.2k on a damn phone

In what way specs are better? Even on the IPX, apple skims on cost and put the same front cam 7MP f/2.2 lens. S8/N8 already have better 8MP f/1.7 (think N8 has OIS as well). For fast charging to work on IPX/8 you have to buy those big bulky charger whereas S8/N8 comes with a sleek/petite charger at no extra cost. Plus the IPX OLED screen in inferior to S8 as well as water resistant rating.

s8 launch price was around $800. At that price usually you get freebies (wireless charger/DEX/SDcard) bundled. Now the price is around $600. s8 would be the most matching competitor to IPX as it has about the same size and equivalent specs.

So the base IPX will cost $1100 if get the fast charger which is nearly double S8.
In what way are the N8 specs better? Iphone x (and some apply to iphone 8 will have:
- more advanced soc in the iphone x that will no doubt leave the n8 and ilk in the dust
- two lens OIS
- better 3d and face detection
- support for new QI multiple wireless charging standard via the wireless pod
- better camera

And what is the price of the note 8? $950. The s8 is now a mid-tier model more aligned with the iphone 8.

What you posted aren’t the Note 8 sales. It’s a general statement that Samsung sales declined after the Note 7 disaster. Note 8 sales figures haven’t been made public yet by according to Samsung but they did say Note 8 is breaking records in China

Note 8 is also confirmed to be breaking all kinds of records in India

https://www.goandroid.co.in/samsung-galaxy-note-8-record-pre-orders-in-most-of-the-countries/70140/

http://www.gsmarena.com/record_preorders_for_galaxy_note8-news-27199.php

The iPhone X is DOA in India because it’s price is INR 89000 ($1388) while Note 8 costs INR 67000 ($1045).

The iPhone X is DOA in China because 8388 yuan($1283) there while Note 8 costs 6988 yuan ($1067)

Let’s be real, the phone is dead on arrival anywhere in Asia. Apple’s gone crazy with the pricing worldwide. The Note 8 is cheaper has a bigger screen, supports S Pen and likely has a better display.

The only reason I may be getting the X is because it’s compatible with iPad and Watch which likely aren’t all that popular in Asia. Remove the iPad and Watch from the equation and hold the iPhone on its own merit and only a moron would buy the iPhone X over the Note 8.
Okay, so you admit Note 8 isn't taking anywhere by storm as people can't get them and how the sales would be after one year. Gotcha.

And you're making a proclamation about an unreleased phone that can't even be pre-ordered. Perfect.

But to the point the Note 8 would have to be doing well in comparison to the disastrous note 7.

So does Note 8
better 3d and face detection
You don't know that. The only time we saw it in action, it failed

- support for new QI multiple wireless charging standard via the wireless pod
I had this on my Lumia 820 in 2012, 5 years ago. So did Samsung. Nothing unique about this. If Apple had really achieved true wireless charging via air then that would be real innovation.

BTW no comment on Phil's comment "It still has wires" a few years ago?

- better camera
The Note 8 camera was better than the 7 Plus so it remains to be seen on this model

And what is the price of the note 8? $950.
You clearly do not understand that the Note 8 ships with many accessories and freebies at that price and it has expandable storage. And the difference is much much graver than that outside the US. In most countries the iPhone X 64GB is selling for $300 more than the Note 8. You can almost buy 2 S8 phones for the price of 1 iPhone X.

The s8 is now a mid-tier model more aligned with the iphone 8.
Samsung didn't distinguish between features on S8,S8 Plus and the Note 8. The Note 8 is effectively an S8 Plus with a Pen so calling it mid tier is false. I am thinking Samsung eventually plans to fold the features of the Note into the S series eventually as they are almost the same thing.

Oh and I hope mib doesn't mind copying that the cheaper Note 8 has over iPhone X

Quick list showing what Note 8 has over IPX.

Hardware

- S-PEN
- Large 6.3 OLED infinity WQHD+ display with max 1200nits brightness
- Headphone jack
- Fingerprint / IRIS Scanner
- Dual SIM card (some countries)
- MicroSD card support (additional 256 GB)
- Built-in heart rate/SP02 sensor
- IP68 water resistant rating
- USB/UTG support

- DLNA built-in support : stream music/video to any DLNA enabled devices without needing any setup.

- SIDESYNC : operate phone from any PC/mac within wifi network. Phone screen appears as a virtual window in PC/mac. You can use PC mouse/speaker/mic to make calls or continue an editing session or run any apps in the phone from the PC. Similar to Iphone hand-off/continuity but more flexible.

- DEX docking station- transform phone into a full desktop.

- Transfer any files between ANY devices via Wifi-Direct / BT. No additional setup/hardware requirement.

- Plug in portable disk/thumbdrive/mouse/gamepad directly to phone using usb cable. Quickly transfer out your files/photos/videos. Or just play a video off your portable drive. Or use a gamepad to play games. Or use mouse to interact with phone.

- Play music to 2 different sound devices via BT 5.0 (e.g. share music to 2 BT headsets). Also set individual app to specific sound source e.g. waze to always output sound to phone speakers and music players to BT. Using sound assistant you can set up different sound profiles depending on situations. Use Adapt Sound to fine tune sound to match you.

- Samsung Pay - can be used at more outlets (since it supports both NFC and magnetic strip)

- File System: something fundamental that we have been using (that's missing from Iphone).

- VR headset support - a whole new experience for you to explore

- With Samsung Connect + SmartThings Hub - provide an integrated system to connect/manage your TV/fridge/appliances or home audio/visual and home accessories like lights/sensors.

- Samsung Flow - to connect/integrate with Windows eco-system.

- Download Booster - combine both LTE and Wifi download simultaneously

OS / Software

AOD - always on display. simple and yet very useful. Plus you can theme it as well.

Multi-Window - run apps in separate top/bottom windows or popup windows simultaneously. e.g continue to view you tube while you are doing a whatsapp chat.

Secure Folder - it is like a second login environment. It has a separate copy of system settings. You can install second copy of your app here and it runs in its own seperate data space. e.g. you can concurrently run 2 copies of whatsapp (one for work number and the other personal) and get notify at the same time. Or setup another Exchange account to sync work email which is only viewable in secure folder.

Game launcher - a separate environment to launch games. You can set sound, notify on/off, no accidental touches, boost performance etc

Immersive mode - set the top status or bottom navigation (or both) to auto-hide to maximise screen area. Can set exclusion for certain apps. Can have floating panel with home, back, task buttons for easy one handed use.

Set default app - you can set your own app to be default app to open different kind of files/data. Or change the soft keyboard.

Shortcut - create shortcuts to anything: one touch direct dial/sms, directly open battery usage in Settings, open specific screen of an app directly etc. Place shortcuts anywhere - in homescreen, notification, side panel etc.

Home/Launcher - fully customizable with themes, widgets, icon packs and live wallpapers - no more boring grid of icons. You can also use other launchers as well. Personalize your UI anyway you like.

Smart Lock - auto unlock when phone is connected to certain pre-specified locations (incl BT/Wifi/geo locations)

Side panels - customizable with many useful add-on panels as well.

Samsung Health - you can have widget to show your steps, measure your heart rate/sp02/stress, track your workouts all using the phone only.

Play/App Store: Many app stores to choose from. You can also side-load apps giving you more flexibilities and cost benefits.

Other Niceties - (1) record phone calls. (2) smart stay to keep screen on while you are looking at it. (3) Screen recorder to record what's happening on screen (4) answer call by pressing volume key (5) reduce UI size for one handed use (6) take continuous screen shot (7) flip phone over to mute call (8) quickly launch camera by double press power button (9) wave hand in front to wake up device (10)

Automation

There are unlimited possibilities with Android multi-tasking capability. You can setup tasks which the phone can do automatically for you. This opens up quite a lot of use cases NOT possible with Iphone. Some examples you can have running in your phone.

- auto set ring/network profile depending on situations (at home/work/outdoors)
- auto send SMS when near pickup location (great if you pick up someone regularly)
- redirect important calls to covering when you are engaged.
- start call recording when calls from certain persons.
- auto change wallpaper based on events.
- mute/unmute ring based on calendar meetings.
- timed ring profile.
- tap on NFC sticker - initiated certain tasks.
- auto send canned SMS to birthday
- pull files from certain ftp/http locations to phone periodically or when certain parameters changed
- selective sync from cloud storage to local folders
- auto start/close apps when certain app is started.
- start music app when headphone is plug in
- start certain app(s) on phone remotely or using a SMS.
-set screen to landscape when certain apps are launched.
-auto read out received sms/whatsapp under certain preset conditions like driving/phone turned over/etc
- and many many more.

..... BLAH BLAH BLAH

No one here really cares what a crappy Android phone can do, even one whose hardware specs may eclipse the iPhone yet it's DOA *because* it's run by the crappy Android.

Most of us are here because WE WANT IPHONE, except the jealous and the haters.

A fingerprint sensor is equated to an ignition key in a car. Apple obsoleted them. Not an advantage. Headphone jack, not an advantage anymore as I can still use my headphones. I deleted the software related items as that is a discussion for another day.

Nobody would buy the n8 phone if Samsung didn't throw stuff in. Samsung has to make it attractive.

Both iphone 8 and iphone x will be impossible to get, as per the usual post-keynote frenzy.

Funny because I may be preordering the iPhone X (depends on my mood) but I am not blind that the comptetion has more than caught up with Apple. Honestly I still find the Note 8 a more beautiful device but I just cant find a single good Android tablet or smart watch which is why I may be buying the iPhone X

It's all good. Forces us to look elsewhere. The Pixel 2 could be the ticket. Project Fi is worth waiting for.

I have both the galaxy s8 and the iphone7 and people are not going to like face ID imo, the touch Id on the 7 works so well everything else sucks ...

Face ID? It hurt me just to watch the demo.

I take our household budget very seriously. Now is the time for us to be experimenting with all of our computing options and available ecosystems before we hit the restrictions of living on a retirement income while still having to pay college tuitions.

I see it differently. Now is the time to save the most amount of money while you are (hopefully) living well below your means. If you're not living well below your means, then now is the time to downsize so that you can save the maximum amount of money. On the other hand, I recognize that slogging off to some dumb cubicle or open office every day and watching the best hours of the best years of your life flit away in the glare of a computer screen is the modern day equivalent of industrial age assembly-line work, so one needs to pamper oneself once in a while. Trouble is the satisfaction that comes from acquiring stuff is so short-lived.

The other day while considering a new iPhone, I took the case off of my old 6 Plus, which I'm still using, and said, "damn, that's a nice phone. I love how it looks and how thin and light it is. Plus the speaker phone sounds great, and it has a headphone jack!" In an instant, I had a "new phone. " Satisfied. The trick is to learn to love what you have. Money saved. Thirst quenched.

So much wrong in this post. Random thoughts....

- The FaceID and Iris scanner on Samsung devices are awful. They can both be beaten by a photo
- Nobody wants to use a pen/stylus with their phone
- The built in heart rate thing is more Samsung crap. Not accurate at all
- Who needs a headphone jack?
- Skipped over your sections on software and automation because everyone knows Samsung software is garbage and is far from a selling point. iOS is far more stable, secure, and upgrade-able.
- Listing the Google App store as an advantage is interesting. Lots of Malware and other crap. Apps are usually far better on iOS.

Does the new Note still explode, or was that fixed?

Very good point! We do have investments and savings put aside. But I can't say we are living well below our means at the moment. Not because we are spendthrifts. Far from it. Until last year, I was driving exclusively the same car I saved up well over a year for out of college. Lol...I was 50 when I got my new truck which is "pre-owned." My first car will be 25 next month and I still have it. I used to say I wanted to be buried in it but realized that sounded like I was wishing to have an accident in it.

My husband and I lived together on hand me down furniture, cheapest housewares and particleboard furniture. We'd take long walks and pull some of our decor out of stuff people piled up at the curb to be hauled away. It's amazing what people threw away back before EBay was a thing. :p We had a no frills wedding, no honeymoon, and my wedding dress was a regular cheap dress.

Right around the time the first iPhone was released my husband's career started really taking off. It's absolutely amazing now. But as life often turns out, just as we can finally afford the beautiful furniture of our dreams from the gorgeous designer showrooms, we realize the furniture will last longer than our need for it. Because it IS time to downsize in preparation for eventual retirement condo living. So I live in sort of a fixer upper McMansion in the country, furnished in shabby chic. My friends think it's both funny and awesome.

We have about five more years to live it up and then it will be time to go back to tight budgeting. I can't really get things that won't fit into a future retirement condo lifestyle anymore, so I'll indulge my love of tech a bit silly until I really have to stop. I admit, I will dearly miss annual upgrades when that happens.

We have about five more years to live it up and then it will be time to go back to tight budgeting.

I don't equate living it up with spending money, though (I don't think you do, either). For me living it up is about having no debt, an old used car, a small place so that I cannot buy anything to junk it up with, a condo that someone else takes care of (no lawn or roof to fix), and time to travel the world. Happiness. My partner moved to Finland recently and furnished the whole place for about 500 Euro using a second hand store. Lovely stuff, too. Lovely country, as well. Its citizens don't run around worrying about a health catastrophe bankrupting them or how the loss of a job will result in losing health insurance, for example.

BTW, to travel the world these days, Google's Project Fi is the ticket. If you have to stick w/ iPhone, get a Pixel long enough to activate that Fi SIM and transfer it to the iPhone. There's nothing better.

Another great thing about traveling the world is that you see that most people don't give a hoot about iPhone, much less the latest model. Puts all of this hype into perspective.

We moved from a tiny townhouse to successively bigger houses to raise a family in the larger-than-life American suburban style with a pool and big yard and all that. Oh my God is it a lot of work and responsibility. It is not a lifestyle we can sustain indefinitely in terms of financially or emotionally, but it's fun for our family and extended family to have this "facility" to enjoy for a few more years. We get to come together and make great memories here. Then we go off to a nicely located simple condo when the kids are all grown and away and the elders have passed on.

I haven't even begun to think of traveling yet. How exciting!
