Got a chance to try the building scanning locator feature while walking to Penn Station this morning.

It automatically puts a “scanning box” graphic around your blue dot position on the map when it is having difficulty pinpointing your position.

I tapped the blue dot and it simply told me to scan the buildings around me with the phone. Didn’t show a camera view or anything…just basically held my phone up like I was taking a video.

Only took a second or two to locate me…pretty cool.

Tried to get a video of it, but I got into an area with lower buildings and it was locating my route really well at that point.

On a train to NJ for the day, so going to try transit now and see how week it tracks.

Pretty impressed with my limited transit use today (hour train ride out to NJ and currently riding back).

Showed “live” location of next train coming to station.

Directions for this trip weren’t really complicated…no transfers or anything…but time info was spot on and updates from NJ Transit were live in the app.

….and while I was typing this, gave me a notification that I was coming into my station.

Hey MozMan!!! Justin gives an interesting idea about why the US is taking so long on Look Around. Including a mention of the new detailed city experience possibly coming nationwide. That definitely lines up with more detail on CarPlay, mentioned separately from the super-detailed cities!

So you know what? If this delay is going to end up possibly giving us both Look Around AND the detailed streets...the wait would definitely be worth it! If this is going to be the case, I wonder if we won't see anything Monday and this ends up being the CarPlay's "later this year" change.

Maps has so far been my favorite change in iOS 15, and the possibilities make it even more exciting!

So…remember where you heard it first. Hah.

Not sure if Apple is doing this on purpose due to the ever changing routing due to construction or if it automatically routed to this general spot since it came from my calendar reminder.

Either way, worked well as one really needs to look at the road signs from this point until the terminal.

94th St exit? It says "Ramp" now? Will need to check that out when I'm on the x-way.

So...I wanna bring something up. It's kind of interesting, but also kind of useless.

There seems to be pockets of...old iOS 13 Maps data still hiding in the current Maps code, and it pokes its head out from time to time under certain conditions.

When we transitioned over into iOS 13, Siri began pronouncing numbered streets differently from how she used to. Prior to iOS 13, 140th Street would be pronounced "One Hundred Fortieth Street". On early iOS 13, that pronunciation changed to "One Hundred and Fortieth Street". This change in pronunciation was annulled a few updates later.

HOWEVER, Siri will still throw in the word "and" in one specific instance: when I'm navigating home. Anytime I select to go home from the Favorites Bar, and I'm approaching my home, Siri will announce the address on the right or left, and when she does so, she uses the "and" variation. This is the only time it happens, and it has always happened for the past two years. Very consistently. If I navigate to the same address via the address itself, and *not* by going home, Siri drops the and. Also, when turning onto said street, Siri doesn't use the and.

Also in early iOS 13, the service road of the highway near me was changed to become known as "Whitestone Expressway Frontage Road". I sent in complaints, and eventually convinced Apple to change the name to "Whitestone Expy Service Rd". The old name was too large for smaller CarPlay screens to fit the whole name in. The new name used standard abbreviations found elsewhere on the map, and changed 'Frontage' to 'Service', which is the nomenclature in the New York City area. More recently, Apple went and removed "Service Rd" from the name entirely, now calling it just "Whitestone Expy".

The other night, while utilizing CarPlay, I asked Siri to search for a Chinese restaurant near me. Siri located it, and as she often does, offered the following: "One option is King Chef, on Whitestone Expressway Frontage Road."

Wait, what!? I wonder where Maps is getting that info from. If I select the POI for this Chinese restaurant, the address shows the street as just "Whitestone Expressway", despite the street it's on actually being displayed as "Whitestone Expy".

Searching for a POI via Siri, or receiving a Maps alert while navigating about a hazard or traffic condition ahead, will often mispronounce standard abbreviations. Today, Maps warned me of a "Hazard" farther up ahead. When announcing the street name pronounced Avenue as "Av", which was shortened to "Ave" on the screen text.

It was fixed in Beta 7, so it's back in the RC...speed limit while in Dashboard mode...
What do you mean? I've seen this somewhere else but I only get speed limits while in navigation mode.

Nevermind...I thought it was referencing something else.

I didn’t notice that…will check when I head to breakfast. Really don’t use dashboard mode much at all.

Also…threw together some one minute snippets of my drive to the airport yesterday from downtown. Thought these would be good to just as a comparison against the detailed version when I’m back in a few weeks.

Did dashboard mode ever show the speed limit? Like I said, I don’t use it, so not sure…but doesn’t seem like a lot of room for it to fit anyway.

I know Waze shows it, but that’s always been a major feature of that app (speed limit with speed).

Found this image online…will test again when I go out, but yeah, it is definitely missing on there.

It does for me...most of the time. Every once in a while, it doesn't show up.

That terminal at LaGuardia Airport was really spazzing out when you arrived in Video 5. lol

From your videos, I'm not seeing much of anything different in terms of navigation behavior or camera work.

I did notice that while you were on the BQE heading to the airport, the camera was zoomed in quite far, and the 3D buildings were showing. Did you manually zoom in a bit before taking the recording?

And of course, iOS 15 places Exit Number bubbles on the ramps you need to take.

Didn’t touch a thing…I always want to see what it does on its own.

Quick question to the more knowledgeable folk…
When I am scanning through the standard map in 3D, labeled items lose their label as the move from the screen edge toward the middle of the map (see video - watch left side). Is this normal? I seem to recall it used to be the opposite.

Mine does the opposite. They stay/ come in as I move the map over them.

Maps was unusually smooth this evening. Betcha they just wrapped up more behind-the-scenes work for the official launch of iOS 15 on Monday.

So do most of us believe that Monday will see the launch of the New York City Experience, and perhaps a massive expansion of Look Around in the US?

This will be my last post on iOS 14. While driving the other day, I received a generic “Hazard Ahead” alert via Siri on CarPlay. There was no other info, which makes me wonder if it was user-generated.

As is common practice now, I was given the option to clear it, or mark it as still present. But in this instance, I was stuck in some slow moving traffic, and couldn’t see far enough ahead to know if there was still a hazard or not! The pop-up box closes itself out after about 20 seconds. So I had no way to confirm or cancel.

(There was nothing there when I eventually got to that point.)

That’s what happened when I first saw mine in NYC the week before last. But I was in the car pool lane and just assumed something was there in the slower lanes…never saw it though and you’re right, it cleared before I got to it.

They need to adjust the timing of that box to let you confirm slightly after you pass it.

Few hours to go until iOS 15 launch and still no new detailed maps in New York or London, is there a switch left to flick or will they miss release?

Here’s hoping we see a massive Look Around release today for the US! Fingers are crossed, but confidence isn’t too high!
