So…in my brief use of iOS 15 maps in New York City on CarPlay…I’m puzzled. The camera behavior is certainly very different from iOS 14, and thus far I can’t make much sense of why it does certain things in certain situations. The old map camera views made a bit more sense.
For instance, on many local roads, the camera seems nominally zoomed in, but no 3D buildings are showing. Yet the camera angle is pointed downward, with no horizon visible. New maps seems to be very horizon-shy. At other times, the angle is a bit different, with buildings showing. And driving on a major thoroughfare today, the camera was zoomed way out, the horizon was visible, AND buildings were showing. Bizarre.
And yet, on highways, the camera is not budging at all, and isn’t zooming out like it used to. Again, this is all on CarPlay in a City Experience area. Some of what I’m reporting might be teething glitches as they work on the new CarPlay update.
Here’s my drive to Best Buy:
As you can see, I essentially had no 3D buildings whatsoever at those angles and zoom levels until just before my final turn onto 40th Road approaching Best Buy.
Now, the drive back to my neighborhood, quick spin through downtown Flushing:
So on this trip, look at the difference. 3D buildings essentially for the ENTIRE trip. And different camera behavior. On iOS 14, while driving on local roads, when you got to 0.3 miles from your next turn, Maps would switch from 3D view to an overhead view, and zoom out to make sure you can see the turn ahead. As you approached the turn, the camera would slowly zoom in, but not too far. Within 800 feet of your turn (on CarPlay at least), the 3D buildings would reappear.
On this early build of iOS 15 on CarPlay, as evidenced above, in some circumstances upon getting within 0.3 miles of my next turn, the camera would switch to the top-down view, but would stay zoomed in the entire time. Couldn’t see the upcoming turn at all until I was right on top of it. And on yet other turns, the camera was zooming waaaaaay in approaching the turn. Probably prepping the camera updates, as eventually, zooming in so far will yield the more detailed maps with lane markings, which would certainly help with turns.
But the fun wasn’t over yet….
