Are you in the US? Wait, of course you are.

When I scroll around, if the County Road shield is visible, the name pops in as well at points. For Interstate shields and State Route shields, only the shield appears when zoomed out, but when you zoom in past a certain point, the shields vanish, and you get just the name. I think that works best.

So I just did a round trip to Best Buy. Going there and coming back were two completely different experiences! Will provide pics in a little while. Gotta run one more quick errand.
Just took a look around. You're correct about it showing both depending on zoom level...but I'm only seeing it on some of the roads. Others it just shows the shield only no matter the zoom level.

Different as in more detail?! I don't have anywhere to go today, but I might have to go for a drive if that's the case!!!

Last week I was on holiday and tried to use Apple Maps for navigation (I was using the Beta of iOS 15). I have a Volkswagen Up! with a Bluetooth stereo. I found that whilst playing music from my iPhone the spoken navigation was way too quiet. I had to have the music on really loud just so that I could hear the navigation.

I am sure iOS 14 had a setting where you could choose quiet, normal or loud for the spoken navigation, but I cannot find it at all in iOS 15.

I tried listening to Podcasts instead but then I had a problem where the spoken navigation was always cut short. Instead of saying "At the roundabout take the 2nd exit" it would just say "At the roundabout....".

I have installed the TomTom navigation app and have found this does have an adjustment the spoken naviagtion volume which works perfectly (much louder).

So…in my brief use of iOS 15 maps in New York City on CarPlay…I’m puzzled. The camera behavior is certainly very different from iOS 14, and thus far I can’t make much sense of why it does certain things in certain situations. The old map camera views made a bit more sense.

For instance, on many local roads, the camera seems nominally zoomed in, but no 3D buildings are showing. Yet the camera angle is pointed downward, with no horizon visible. New maps seems to be very horizon-shy. At other times, the angle is a bit different, with buildings showing. And driving on a major thoroughfare today, the camera was zoomed way out, the horizon was visible, AND buildings were showing. Bizarre.

And yet, on highways, the camera is not budging at all, and isn’t zooming out like it used to. Again, this is all on CarPlay in a City Experience area. Some of what I’m reporting might be teething glitches as they work on the new CarPlay update.

Here’s my drive to Best Buy:

As you can see, I essentially had no 3D buildings whatsoever at those angles and zoom levels until just before my final turn onto 40th Road approaching Best Buy.

Now, the drive back to my neighborhood, quick spin through downtown Flushing:

So on this trip, look at the difference. 3D buildings essentially for the ENTIRE trip. And different camera behavior. On iOS 14, while driving on local roads, when you got to 0.3 miles from your next turn, Maps would switch from 3D view to an overhead view, and zoom out to make sure you can see the turn ahead. As you approached the turn, the camera would slowly zoom in, but not too far. Within 800 feet of your turn (on CarPlay at least), the 3D buildings would reappear.

On this early build of iOS 15 on CarPlay, as evidenced above, in some circumstances upon getting within 0.3 miles of my next turn, the camera would switch to the top-down view, but would stay zoomed in the entire time. Couldn’t see the upcoming turn at all until I was right on top of it. And on yet other turns, the camera was zooming waaaaaay in approaching the turn. Probably prepping the camera updates, as eventually, zooming in so far will yield the more detailed maps with lane markings, which would certainly help with turns.

But the fun wasn’t over yet….

WHAT IS THIS?? Parsons Boulevard is a regular local road! Zoomed out, but showing buildings?? But once you trigger the 0.3 miles changeover, the buildings vanish. lol

I’m going to chalk this up to “We need to wait for the CarPlay update.”

Two runner-up mentions for things that are slightly bothering me:

1) When you start a navigation route, Maps is starting you off by showing you at odd angles. This one in particular made me dizzy:
DABD4329-4E05-48BA-B085-FA4C6F5244B4.png

2) On CarPlay, the Reporting button is hidden away while navigating on a route! While not navigating, the Report button is right where it’s always been:
AE15C8D2-DFD7-4825-A822-981E2FF66557.png

But once you activate a route, the button vanishes, and you have to make the extra step of going into the little pull up screen from the ETA bar to find it:

First commute into the office this morning since upgrading to iOS15 as i was working at home yesterday. As i know where i'm going and basically have it routing for traffic etc. This means i normally have it muted so it doesnt interrupt the radio, this morning i noticed the new option to only have it announce hazards which i've turned on and is handy. On the way in it alerted me to various speed cameras on the motorway (although not sure in time to do a lot about it if you were speeding!!) and some roadworks which it would only have done previously if you had it announcing directions etc as well.

I like the new look of the maps overall, but it seems like navigating around the map on my iPhone 12, there is lots of "flashing" where a lot of the tiles will disappear for a second and reappear as you pan and zoom around. Kind of jarring. Anyone else having this as well? Seems to happen in both light and dark modes, but in dark mode it feels more noticeable to me.

@G1Ravage Yep...I guess you found out all of the CarPlay issues in the detailed area. Hah.

Can you use your phone only and record it to see how it works?
I will try that later today.

Also, two issues with the new report an issue system….

1) As detailed as it is, we seem to have lost the ability to report something general about the app itself?

2) When requesting to change the name of a road, there’s no comments box to explain *why* I’m requesting said change. I can only change the name and provide a photo.

Today I was informed that two of the 11 fixes I’ve reported to apple have been updated. I was pleasantly surprised and maybe oddly excited that a picture I took has been updated and shown for the business I reported the fix too.

So on today’s much longer highway drive, the camera zoomed out quite a bit! BUT, I think it only did so to show me the full length of the traffic slowdown. As I got closer to the end of the traffic zone, the camera was slowly zooming back in again, then remained steady on the highway (zoomed in) for the rest of the trip.

Also included in my photos below are some odd shots where buildings were only appearing on half the screen. lol

I have video! Gotta see if I can upload it to YouTube before I go to sleep. In the meantime….

On some highways, I’m getting some bizarre in-between zoom where buildings are showing on one side of me, but not on the other side. Weird.

Also, I’m seeing a common glitch where lane markings at some intersections are boxes. I’ve reported a few, and they were fixed relatively quickly.

Oh! Before I forget…crap, I got a phone call, and now I forgot. LOL

Check this out…buildings showing on half the screen while zoomed out…but as the camera zoomed in approaching the turn, the buildings disappeared! lol

I have to wonder if elevation is playing a role here, even though Maps on CarPlay isn’t showing the City Experience elevations yet. That neighborhood on the left side there, Briarwood, is at a much higher elevation. Could it be that Maps was showing me those buildings because it believed them to be “close enough” to the camera level to trigger being showed? Despite it all being on a flat plane currently?

Bizarre.

Video Part 3!

Part 3

The Whitestone Bridge isn’t hand-crafted like most of the other bridges. Nothing unusual happened with the camera in the video while driving over the bridge, but on the way back to Queens using CarPlay, the camera zoomed in behind my car, as if to show off a bridge that wasn’t on CarPlay yet. lol

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.
But maps doesn’t seem to support multiple stops or via on a route? Is it just me or is this a staggering omission? It’s not like we always go from a to b all the time, it’s extremely common to go somewhere else on the way, for example this weekend I’m going london but have to drop someone elsewhere on the route. Yes I can just navigate to the first route then start a new one to the final route but that is ridiculous, for a start it’s handy to see the whole journey in order to even decide if you want to do it or not.

Used the Apple Maps Navigation for the first time since upgrading to iOS15 and for the life of me, I could not figure out how I could change the sounds to iPhone speakerphone. Navigation kept using the bluetooth to speak the directions which I hate. Does anyone know where Apple moved the settings to do that? Let's hope Apple wasn't that dumb to remove that function cause otherwise, I am dumping Maps and switching to something else!
