Used the Apple Maps Navigation for the first time since upgrading to iOS15 and for the life of me, I could not figure out how I could change the sounds to iPhone speakerphone. Navigation kept using the bluetooth to speak the directions which I hate. Does anyone know where Apple moved the settings to do that? Let's hope Apple wasn't that dumb to remove that function cause otherwise, I am dumping Maps and switching to something else!

More details…you are connected to CarPlay via Bluetooth and you want to hear directions on the phone? You are hearing them through another Bluetooth connected device?

Neither of our cars have CarPlay so we use old school Bluetooth. On iOS14 when my iPhone connected to Bluetooth and I initiated direction, there was a menu where I could swap audio device for directions - usually I would pick Speakerphone and that worked fine and as expected. The directions would come out from the iPhone speakers, and would not interrupt normal FM radio or CD.

This is directly from iOS14 user guide

“Change the audio device for voice directions
With turn-by-turn directions showing, tap the route card at the bottom of the screen, tap Audio, then choose a device (below Output).

Devices, such as a Bluetooth car device or AirPods, appear as options when they’re connected to iPhone.”

iOS15 as far as I can tell does not have this - that is why I am upset

I've been studying the iOS 15 camera behavior while navigating on CarPlay. It's verrrry different from previous versions. In fact, I'm having a bit of trouble piecing it all together.

It would seem that the SOP for highways now is to remain zoomed in, almost the same level as of local streets. On CarPlay, buildings typically don't show on highways, but sometimes some do. (This could change when CarPlay gets updated.) On the phone, buildings seem to show all the time on highways at the standard zoom. It seems the only time the camera zooms out on while highways is when there's traffic ahead. The camera zooms out just enough so you can see the entirety of the traffic ahead. And then zooms in slowly as you get closer to the end of the traffic. I wonder if this new camera behavior is mainly designed to show off as much detail around you as possible? It's rather unusual for a navigation app to not zoom out while on a highway. Google Maps and Waze do it, as does my car's in-dash navi, and Apple Maps had traditionally always done it. I don't necessarily have a problem with it...I'll wait for the CarPlay update to see how things look with the new details.

On local roads...things seem to be the opposite from before. On the smallest of local roads, the camera seems to zoom out a bit, and buildings don't show. But on secondary roads, the camera zooms out a bit more, shows the horizon, and buildings *do* appear. The camera also sort of behaves like on a highway, where the camera will reposition itself to show off your general direction of travel approaching curves, not necessarily remaining fixed directly behind your car.

I am noticing on CarPlay that the 3D buildings generally appear at higher zoom levels than previously on CarPlay. But there are still inconsistencies compared to what you see on the phone.

I've also been experiencing a glitch where a POI in my "recents" will vanish after navigating there. This has happened twice already. Very unusual. Also, a friend of mine just moved. I updated his address on his contact card. I navigated to his house by telling Siri, "_____ Home", and the directions to his new home came up. But later that day, when going into my recents, "_____ Home" was right there near the top, but for some reason, was now showing his old address.

In released 15 with Maps is there a way to revert to the actual satellite view when a city has a 3D “satellite” view?

Taping 2D icon just changes view to look like Satellite view while still using the flatten image used for 3D view. In past versions this reverted to actual satellite view and tapping icon to change back & forth could help see which was most current and changes. Starting in 2D with a city also isn’t true view from satellite.

I noticed this as well. I wonder if we’re seeing what the camera behavior is going to be like when the extra detail comes in later this year. It would make sense to me, when considering your later point of it maybe being this way to show off as much detail around you as possible. It would be a shame to have all this work going into the extra details, just to have it only visible for a minority of your drive-time.

OH! Just remembered another change...one I'm not too happy about.

When you're actually navigating on a route, Apple Maps now does NOT show you traffic on the map screen, except for what's ahead on your current route. Traffic colors don't appear on adjacent roads at all.

The only exceptions to this are on the route selection screen (before starting a route), when Maps is showing you the "Driving" layer to display your routing options. The other instance is *while* navigating, if you switch to the route overview screen to see your other routing options, *only* the other routing options will display traffic colors on them where applicable. The rest of the map is squeaky clean.

Took a few long drives on CarPlay this weekend; really not a fan of the new iOS 15 zoom levels. It's pretty useless on the highway and for whatever reason even on NYC streets, you don't even get the 3D buildings as often as you should. Hope it gets fixed!!

They said it needs an update way back at WWDC, so I wouldn't use the current views as something that will be around in the long term, particularly in the detailed cities.

Did they ever publicly state when the CarPlay updates would be coming?

Apple put out a press release regarding the new maps today. They mentioned London already being available, and showed photos, but I’m not seeing it.

Took an Uber to work today, so I tested navigation off the phone again. It looks much better in portrait mode currently, and you see more street details approaching turns.

Since CarPlay works off of the landscape aspect (for most vehicles), I wonder if we’ll be potentially losing details. Hopefully not. Here are two examples from today’s commute:

Saw the press release…but not seeing the detail in London yet, either.

Navigating on CarPlay, I noticed today that a few highways/roads I commonly drive on had somewhat different camera behavior than the other day.

But overall, a common theme is that very small neighborhood roads zoom the camera way out, while larger secondary roads give you a much more beautiful view with buildings showing!

iOS 15.0.1 came out today.

I activated my new iPhone 13 Pro Max yesterday, and downloaded the update today.

Maps and CarPlay have felt a little…unstable since then. While driving before, I got a message on the screen asking me if I wanted to cancel my route, but I hadn’t pressed anything!

Road labels are still vanishing at times, so I feel Apple is still tinkering behind the scenes.

OH! Get this! So Apple Maps has always shown you your previous 12 or so destinations in the “Recents” section, right? I always felt they should permit you to view more than that.

When I updated my old phone to iOS 15, I started experiencing a glitch where one of my recent destinations would vanish from the list on its own. Usually one that I needed again. lol

After activating my new phone and downloading iOS 15.0.1, I just experienced something weird. My recents section expanded to show me like 30 or so old destinations…but these were REALLY old! Like, from last year sometime! Totally bizarre. I wonder how Maps even remembered them to bring them up, or why they showed up at all so suddenly.
