One thing I noticed that I THINK is new…zoom level while at a stop light pulls back out to show the whole route.

When I was at one last night it kept going in and out like a heart beat. Hah. I think they’re still fine tuning.

I noticed the Siri voice search button as well….I thought it was trying to connect me to “Meta”…

I believe I have also noticed. The transition to a zoomed out view is much quicker when I enter an expressway off a main roadway.

At times while in a congested area with closely spaced side streets as I’m approaching a turn it also seems to zoom way in quickly listing each street as I pass till the turn, then back out slightly.

This is also dependent on how strong the 5G signal is.

I like to spread the positive in light of all of the negative Maps seems to get in general posts on the main page.

Had to mail something via the UPS Store (no issues there) and then asked Maps to take me to Williams-Sonoma in the local mall. When I got the directions I figured, “Well…Apple Maps screwed up. It’s taking me to a mall entrance on the other end of the mall and I KNOW the store is on the East side.”

I decided to follow the directions and go in that entrance anyway…I need the exercise.

Well….Maps was correct. The store moved to the West side of the mall and was exactly where Maps said to drive and park.

Got home and checked Google….guess who is still wrong? ;)

Satellite View issue

Any reason why ios15 map’s 2D satellite view is still only showing a “flattened” 3D view for cities with 3D view instead of 2D being the true satellite view like older iOS and Mac versions?

I was wanting to see how the old Texas Ranger ballpark was adapted for soccer and football to see that the 2D “satellite” view - just uses an overhead of the 3D view - doesn’t even show the new stadium at all much less changes to the old stadium. They broke ground on new stadium’s construction a little over 4 years ago and opened in 2020 (before Covid would have opened for baseball that spring), but satellite views in iOS 15 still show a parking lot with zero signs of whats there now.

I later checked on an iOS 12 device and on a Mac which at least showed construction in progress by showing an actual 2D satellite view (maybe from late 2018 but not sure). 3D brings areas back to sometime pre October 2017 like both 2D & 3D do in iOS 15. The true satellite view is still out of date, but it’s more recent than 3D view. In past iOS versions I would flip back and forth between them when looking at spots in cities which had both views.

Also how long do they usually update these 3D views and the actual satellite views (US specifically)?

So my friend, who was supposed to have downloaded the iOS 15.2 beta and take screenshots in CarPlay for me, failed. More specifically, he's tried twice now to download the 15.2 beta, and his phone won't boot up at all, and then he has to revert back.

He spoke to Apple Support today, and they got some diagnostic info from his phone to investigate the issue. The Apple rep mentioned that the public release of 15.2 will be...around the first week of December. :(

Darn it...I really wanted the updated CarPlay for my upcoming Thanksgiving trip to New Jersey!

So I have been trying to catch this driving, I have seen this POI. It pops up BP then seconds later changes to Marathon (which is correct).

Anyone in the UK noticed that the speed camera warning sign has changed from a red circle (more typical UK style signage) to a white square in what I would call a ‘?US’ style?

Or is it just my device playing up?

You all seem to be Maps-deprived. And it’s time I provided some videos of me going someplace other than the same old route to work.

So here’s a quick drive over to an eye doctor in Elmhurst. I have some others I’ll try to upload soon.

For my eyes. And your eyes.

(Give it time to process into HD.)

If people don’t appreciate what a game changer this interchange view is, I don’t know what will. Puts you in the exact lane you are supposed to be in.

On the latest beta, the view changes at traffic lights and stop signs when you stop moving for more than a second like here in your video back to the 3D view.

Okay, you can rewatch it now. It's in 1080p. lol I like how Citi Field sort of materializes in the distance once we get on the highway.

I just hope the CarPlay version of this shows this much detail.

Two more! Another drive to work, but this time, we go through Manhattan! This one’s good.

Part 1

Part 2

(No junction view on the FDR Drive exit to the Brooklyn Bridge…most likely because Apple Maps for whatever reason is still struggling to accept the FDR Drive as a highway. Took me years to convince them to update the road layer and start putting in exit info.)

New video! Short drive on a few highways to a diner.

Plenty of junction view here!

Couple of observations…when junction view comes into play and you have a 2-lane option, the routing line/arrow actually expands to cover both lanes…seems to do this in 2D mode as well, but harder to see.

Also, there was a complaint on Reddit about trees blocking the route view occasionally in junction view. I see it here as well, but it doesn’t bother me. The trees have a level of transparency. Maybe it could be higher.

A few complaints online as well about Maps being wonky…sounds like it’s time for a major update!!

So...let's reset on the state of play here: Do we think what we are seeing on CarPlay in the 15.2 betas is the improved version that was touted, or just the run up to that? I know that there are improvements in what is being displayed, but they don't seem to be the full range of what was promised.

They sure made it sound like there was going to be more to the CarPlay changes than what we've seen so far.

I like the improvements we've seen in 15.2, but I'm definitely hoping this isn't it.

I think “yes” to CarPlay, BUT I still think they now plan to update the road detail and LookAround to the rest of the USA to catch up to CarPlay being updated in 15.2.

Has anyone had a problem in Maps while using CarPlay where your current position suddenly jumps a few miles from where you are actually located? It’s happened to me twice in the last few months, once on iOS 14, once on 15. When this happens Maps tries to ”reroute” me back to the right location even though I’m already there.

If I unplug my phone from the car while this is happening it will immediately show the correct location on my phone. Plugging the phone back in at that point causes my location to again jump to the wrong place.

The only fix I’ve found is to shut off my truck for a few minutes and then restart CarPlay. Any thoughts on if this is due to a problem with Maps/CarPlay or is it a problem with the software in my vehicle? Or both?

Sounds like an issue with your vehicle’s internal GPS. When plugged in to CarPlay, I believe the phone uses the vehicle’s GPS, and if for some reason that’s getting messed up, then Maps will get confused. Other people in this thread are much more knowledgeable about the topic and can provide more details.

This is the correct answer.

A couple of things to try:

* user manual required, but make sure to reset the car’s compass/gps to your current location (if available). The dealer should have done this when setting up the car for delivery to you, but sometimes they don’t and it messes up anything that uses the compass and/or gps.

* make sure the firmware for the head unit is up to date. Sometimes the dealer says they have to do this, but you can typically figure it out online.

I’ve never experienced something like that. But it does sound like some sort of interruption with your vehicle’s GPS. Despite the cost involved, I always recommend updating your car’s infotainment system/Navi, as those updates often contain software updates that improve compatibility with CarPlay.

Today I had one of my worst experiences with Apple Maps ever. And it really makes me question if they experienced an issue with getting a stable 15.2 out to us sooner, leaving the general populace on a somewhat buggy 15.1.1 with the Maps backend servers being so crazy lately. This being one of the most heavily traveled days of the season….

So first, Maps directed me onto a standstill highway right off the bat, that both Google Maps and Waze told me to avoid. Maps suggested it was a mere eight minute traffic delay, but it took nearly 30 minutes.

Later, the screen bugged out, and Maps switched to a top-down view for the remainder of all of my highway driving. Never seen anything like that before. It was almost as if the map got stuck on the “let’s zoom out because we’re showing you traffic” view, but there was no more traffic. Even after switching to a different highway, the camera was top-down, and it would be zoomed out quite far for a while, and then zoom back in again. It went back to normal after exiting onto local streets. (The camera view was normal only in the split screen mode.)

Coming home, I discovered a location on a major highway where Maps offered zero lane or exit guidance for some reason. It really took me by surprise, and I hadn’t driven through this area in a number of years, so I almost didn’t get into the correct lane.

On a side note, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a previous destination in CarPlay showing a thumbs up approval rating….
