Chatter online would seem to indicate that iOS 15.2 isn't ready for public release yet. They're apparently still waiting on a Beta 4 to come out, and the current beta is really buggy still?

I haven’t had any issues…but yeah, some people complaining about brightness settings, battery life, etc.

Remember…Apple doesn’t work that way. They don’t say “Gosh, that beta is way more buggy than we thought. Better throw a few more out there before releasing to the public “. They have a schedule and, absent something drastic, they stick to it.

All that is a way of saying that 15.2 should land for the public in the next week or so regardless of what bugs you are hearing about.

Not sure about the POI Data feed they get, I have had to send in multiple gas station corrections including Hess (closed many years ago), two BP stations and a closed Shell. All have been corrected. Interestingly enough, a couple of Speedways have very recently converted to Exxon and they are already updated.

Since we don’t have 15.2 yet, here’s a collection of various screenshots I’ve taken lately on 15.1.1.

With City Experience navigation on the phone, I wanted to share the difference in “view” between having the phone in landscape versus portrait. Because I’m wondering if the CarPlay zoom and detail will ultimately more mirror the landscape style….

In portrait, you can make out lane markings while driving on the highway. In landscape, you don’t see any lane markings, but you get a wider field of view, and you can see the horizon.

Below are some screenshots of recent trips using CarPlay. No City Experience in CarPlay yet (obviously), but once out of every 30 trips or so, I get the “newer” camera angles and zooms on CarPlay (except for junction view). Buildings appear while driving on many highways, but not on others. It’s weird.

Oh yeah! Another thing I’ve noticed, both on the phone, and on CarPlay…the camera zooming out on highways to show you the length of the traffic jam is very inconsistent. It seems to work on some highways, but never on others.

I take that back about the status updates...no matter when you click on them, they seem to always show a time that is two minutes ahead of the current time?

EDIT - Okay, I take that back a second time, and negate my previous take-back.

The road was closed a bit earlier today. I then received a notification from one of my bus/subway apps that the buses that were previously being detoured by the water main break had resumed their normal routes. I walked over to take a look, and sure enough, the road was reopened. I then opened Apple Maps...and the road closure was gone!

So that has me thinking...how did Apple Maps update? Were they contacted by a governmental group to report the road reopening? Or do you think Maps reopened the roads on its own after detecting a certain number of vehicles passing through the closure area?

Road closures data are taken from TomTom. You can easily check in TomTom Mapshare Reporter page (must sign up), road closures data are 100% identical. TomTom has this system/algorythm when it detects lot of vehicles moving particular closed segment, it cancels the closure.

Not in the USA or any other country that uses Apple’s data.

More than likely, due to the timing it was called in by or grabbed from government data and backed up by Apple’s own movement algorithm.

Looking back at Apple’s past Maps announcements, they’ve been giving us rough timeframes for where and when to expect the new map to be released. I wish they did this with Look Around. It doesn’t have to be a specific, narrowed down time frame. Just a location and vague timeframe will do, like “Look Around will be expanded to the rest of Illinois this winter” for example. It’s not overly specific, so it leaves plenty of wiggle-room for when that would actually occur. Give us a roadmap (haha) of upcoming Look Around releases to look forward to! Plus, I’m definitely curious to see which cities are next in line for the ”super detail”. Looking forward to Chicago! I don’t go into the city that often, but assuming the super detail covers the same area that Look Around does (for instance, let’s say for example Chicago had the super detail now), it’s something I would still be able to experience during part of my drive to and from work since a part of my commute is within the Look Around coverage area.

Apple’s in-house MAP data is one thing, but ROAD CLOSURES data are still outsourced by TomTom. Look at this:

1) Screenshot of today’s road closure on Harford rd in Baltimore - notice that road closure marking ends before the crossroad

2) Now look on this screenshot from TomTom mapshare reporter. They are identical (not map data, but road closure data are)
49c56b6124887349cb9ba93c4531e3b0.jpg

3) I reported missing road closure part to TomTom. Orange marker means, that my report is being processed
8a9cef31a9c7786b87a823cc5e1136f7.jpg

4) My report was accepted and picked-up by TomTom’s algorithm few minutes later
49f2bfccdda7064660ca94332b77724b.jpg

5) Almost immediately Apple maps are also showing the change

Hmmmm…I signed up and looking to try this to verify, but looks like you’re correct from your example.

EDIT: needed to turn the traffic layer on with TomTom to see the reports. Will try it out.

I think I finally experienced one of those bizarre glitches where Maps puts the route line in a strange place.

Here it’s telling me to turn right onto the highway service road, but the route line looks like I should be turning on the local road just before it. Even after turning onto the service road, and Maps *shows* me on the service road, the route line still believed I was making my merry way through the local community. Weird.

From the iOS 15.2 RC release notes…

CarPlay
  • Enhanced city map in Apple Maps with road details like turn lanes, medians, bike lanes, and pedestrian crosswalks for supported cities
Looks like I won’t be seeing this anytime soon ? Crap. Well…if you’re in a supported city, 15.2 is an exciting CarPlay update for you!

Hoping for Look Around soon. That’ll tide me over ?

Maybe my eyes are messing with me, but in light mode...does the grey color for the more major roads/highways seem darker? Like it pops more against the rest of the colors to be more visible

So, having a discussion with some folks on Reddit about LookAround and road markings being released and noticed that Apple changed the bullet point about the new driving features to the following:

New driving features -- A new dedicated driving map highlights details like traffic and incidents, and a route planner lets you view your upcoming journey by choosing a future departure or arrival time.

So, road markings and 3D interchanges were removed from this separate listing and are now only under the detailed city experience. :(

You can still read the original version of this bullet in the first post of this thread.

Kind of bummed, have to say!

Now it seems like my only shot at seeing any of this is when Chicago gets the detailed city experience...and that's if it extends farther than the current Look Around boundaries do. I could be wrong, but I think the current detailed city experiences cover a larger area than Look Around did for that city, and then Look Around was expanded to match up with it. Hopefully that's what happens with Chicago's release, because then I could end up with the detailed city experience and Look Around at the same time! Given that I still don't have cycling directions from iOS 14...I have a feeling I'll be waiting quite a while for all of the iOS 15 stuff...

Not surprised, but updating to the 15.2 RC doesn't automatically get you the new Maps in Australia - have missed out all these weeks, haven't seen it on any of my devices!

Hopefully it's due in the next week or two.

In the afternoon today, I went to Settings to check if there was a software update. The thing started spinning around and not showing a build, and my heart skipped a beat, because I thought 15.2 was going to be available. But alas, nothing was there. lol

I really think Look Around and some other road details are going to expand quickly soon, even though it looks like it’s only for City Detail areas. The data really does extend quite far outside of those designated areas before falling apart.

I think the bolded part is an important point. It gives me hope that it’ll be sooner rather than later because it extends a decent distance outside of the designated area DOES suggest that it’s there…but also NOT there.

The Australia update will almost certainly launch alongside the release of 15.2.
