I posted these thoughts on Reddit after laying in bed at 4 am, but I think it makes sense. Thoughts?

* L.A., NYC and London detailed Maps are already done and we should see them in one of the last betas. Apple simply released SF to show the capability and encourage developers to include Maps in more of their apps.

* Detailed road info and LookAround for the rest of the USA will be released at once with ios15. They are obviously tied together and again, Apple is simply waiting until the end of the beta cycle or iOS 15 public release to launch. The wide release of LookAround in recent country releases seems to make this plausible.

I certainly hope both are correct. Seems plausible.

This is weird. I had just rebooted my phone, and was scrolling around New York City on my phone when I noticed…this odd dot. (Circled for clarity.) If you zoom in closer, it becomes two dots, and if you keep zooming in….

HUH?!? Is anyone else seeing that?

I did a quick and dirty trip with Apple Maps from my place to the local McDonalds. ;)
Worked great on 15 beta 2 and even quickly and smoothly handled a quick U-Turn.

Couple of issues though:
1. It took me to the wrong entrance and told me my destination was on my right when it was on my left.
2. It told me to turn right when leaving the parking lot even though it is a right turn only exit.

Seems to be getting better. It still needs work entering and exiting addresses.

Did they remove city flyover? I can’t find 3D cities anymore.

Also, does everyone have access to detailed street map? I’m looking around SF and it’s just a normal plain map.

New ‘interactive globe’ map requires A12 Bionic or newer

City flyover is still there, you have to tap on city name and flyover shows up as an option in the detail box that pops up:

I wanted the end of that trail to be two secretly quantum entangled locations that Apple’s mappers accidentally found and marked :)

I’ve seen this, too, also with a McDonald’s. I continue to report these navigation misses via the Maps app because the correct entrance for my McDonald’s doesn’t even require a U-turn! ;)

Hey Everyone,

I gave Beta 2's navigation a go, and although there was a few niggles where a speed camera warning was verbally announced after the camera (despite being in the correct location on the map) I'm overall impressed.

However... Can someone tell me where the navigation audio volume controls have gone? in iOS 14 you used to be able to select from 3 volume levels for the navigation instructions. I've even checked in settings > maps > navigation & guidance.
It's annoying because I was unable to adjust the navigation instruction volume independently of the music, making the instructions very difficult to hear.

It’s not there anymore… not that I ever noticed it was differentiated enough to begin with.

You should be able to adjust the volume when it speaks to make it louder/softer while music is playing.

I’m guessing Apple found that setting redundant since it had no relation to other sounds that might be coming out of the phone at the same time.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. Pressing the volume up and down buttons adjusts both the music and the spoken navigation instructions at the same time.

I should point out, that the phone is connected to the car via it's USB port. Ford Sync as opposed to CarPlay.

So…your Ford Synch doesn’t adjust the volume either?

I have this issue as well, but only because I added an “Android” version of CarPlay to my Audi and it does. It distinguish between music and voice. I listen to my music loud and CarPlay directions are also loud.

Newer cars that have this capability (whether it is CarPlay, Android Auto or even Synch) should let you either adjust either with the knob while they are playing/talking or let you go into the audio menu of the car and set there.

I'll have an experiment, maybe the behaviour is different when using Bluetooth audio? Certainly for USB, connected to the Ford Sync system, there is no way to change just the Siri voice volume over the music. I really need that option back or maps just won't be usable for navigation.

Go into the Synch audio menu…there is a separate volume for “spoken audio” or “voice audio” for its own spoken voice when used.

Typically, phone spoken audio is “synched” to this setting as well.

Ok, the more I use turn-by-turn on CarPlay, the more I’m thinking the lack of 3D models is a bug. (Though of course it may be by design that they aren’t showing most of the time).

My thinking on this is because whenever the map gets to a zoom level where the models DO show…it’s very choppy. My experience is not a case of one second they aren’t showing and the next they are. When it gets to the zoom level, the models flicker in and out and then the models stay on screen. Could that mean absolutely nothing in terms of the lack of models when further zoomed out? Sure. The behavior of the map just seems a little odd.

I’m also seeing some occasions where I’m on a winding road, and while looking at the map, I see where the road curves to the left and then veers back to the right. When this happens, the blue routing line follows the curve in the road as expected but I also see a grey line that shows a straight-a-way through the curves. As I get closer to the curve, that line disappears. Tough deciding how best to explain this issue because I missed an opportunity to screenshot it (and it also does NOT happen on my phone. Only happens on CarPlay). I’ll try and catch a screenshot next time I encounter it.

Yeah, sounds like early beta glitches. Hopefully.

I'd really like Apple Maps on iOS 15 to have a strong foundation, and be far less glitchy than iOS 13.

Agreed. Was 13 bad on CarPlay? (Didn’t have a CarPlay compatible car at that time, so I can only go off of the experience on the phone which I can’t recall complaining about too much).

Yeah. When they changed to their new "base" look and new night mode and such, I started experiencing far more minor hiccups on CarPlay. Much of these never went away, even through iOS 14.

Has anyone else on CarPlay experienced audio issues when first starting or ending your route? At the very start or end of navigation, Siri's message is getting cut off for the first second or two. For example:

"Head north on Union Street" comes out sounding like "..d north on Union Street."

"Arrived at Home!" comes out sounding like "..ved at Home!"

During the route, everything is fine.

Ahh ok. Yeah, can’t say I experienced any of those (but again all I have to go on at that time was my phone).

As for audio issues, I can’t speak on that one. I don’t use the spoken directions, so I’d have to turn it on during my next drive to test it out!

Wow. I drive with audio off in my local area and on when traveling. If it's gone that's going to be annoying.
