Would be nice to see both Face ID and underscreen TOUCH ID in an iPhone. Now with the pandemic it’s more useful than ever
Apple has several patents for underscreen TOUCH ID

Bottom line: Touch ID is now a necessity as most people are entering their passcodes 50 times a day. It’s annoying
Email Tim Cook hopefully that helps

Infrared technology is not new and has been used for years. Do you have any medical reason to fear it?
I don’t have a medical reason but I’m not comfortable with the idea of IR shining into my eyes like that every time I have to unlock my phone or authorize something. I don’t shine my remotes into my eyes. What are the long term effects of this after years and years.
I have my phone set up to automatically lock after X minutes for security reasons. If they can’t do the power button or under screen I’d be willing to have the chin on the bottom again and put a notch on top. I feel that strongly about it.

You are subjected to all kinds of interference everyday that are in my opinion far worse. It is beyond your control and they wont turn it off because you don't like it.. I really don't think FaceID is anything to worry about in comparison.

The most "iSheep" I have ever heard is that notch looks good, you can prefer FaceID but no way is a "bitten" screen better than a full screen.

TouchID FTW!

I still prefer touch ID even after years of using FaceID on phones and tablets.

FaceID doesn't save me much time or convenience compared to TouchID.

Again, the notch is not an aesthetic design. It’s a function of the tech underneath. But in a weird way, unintentionally(debatable), it differentiated the iPhones screen from others. If you see that notch when a person next to you is using their device you know pretty much it’s an iPhone. So for me it’s not a “looks good” perspective. It’s their current sole biometric for now. If it’s a show stopper for you then explore your options. I personally don’t have an issue with it as it doesn’t impede Anything I do with the phone functionally. I can’t believe this thread ? is already about 160 posts deep. ?

They should figure out a way of having a secondary Face ID scan with a mask. So it identifies who you are when wearing a mask. Maybe take details of the persons eyes or something. That would be awesome.

No way. Touch ID doesn't work at all for me, whereas FaceID always works. Ditch it.

Lol Apple blah blah blah they are wrong, I’m right, I’m superior.
Back to the topic, I can’t say Face ID is wrong, it’s actually a much more advanced technology, but it’s good in this pandemic age to include Touch ID as well. Finger crossed for the next iPhone to incorporate this, just like the iPad.

Can people get over the dang notch already. And Face ID works great in colder climates when you’ve got winter gloves on.
Good point about colder climates but I'll never "get over" the notch. It is, too me, in no way a +ve.

does the 12 have a much longer power button than the 11 did? maybe thats prep for adding TouchID next year?

Although I like FaceID and how it autofills passwords and expands notifications without needing to press anything. TouchID in the power button as an additive feature would be fine by me, but I hope eventually we get under screen fingerprint reading. If they do checks as soon as you tap to wake the screen, or every time you’re touching the screen, it could effectively have you ‘always’ authenticated so could still do the password autofill without prompting for a fingerprint scan

I don’t know why I can unlock my Mac with my Apple Watch, but not my iPhone.

Surely they could allow a workaround if the iPhone recognises you’re wearing a mask rendering FaceID useless....

What I would like to see is an option that allows the screen to open without swiping up with your finger. So you use Facial Recognition and it then takes you to your home screen , not having to swipe up.
Not sure why the swipe up is a necessity.

Because otherwise as soon as you look at your screen to view a notification it would disappear and you’d just be on the Home Screen.

For my use, Touch ID works better for me. I prefer it over Face ID. I entered my passcode more times with Face ID than I ever did with Touch ID, and this was before the pandemic.

But the solution is to have both authentication methods. That way people can pick and chose which one to use.

For me that would be fine, I would rather then look at my notifications if I chose to vs always having to swipe up. Keep in mind this would be an option to turn on or keep it the way it currently is. Maybe a third option is if you have notifications it does not open to the Home Screen.
I don’t think this would take much effort from Apple to enable this.

Meh. Hyperbole, unless you are already fat, old, sick, or have an undiagnosed condition.

I had it back in January. Got in Chinatown right before Christmas.

If you can survive the flu, you can survive the China virus. I believe that the quality that makes the China virus more dangerous is that it is extremely more transmittable than influenza.

I’m allowed to not wear a mask due to carrying antibodies, but do so anyways because I don’t have time for hysterical Karen’s and he-Karen’s making a scene over me thinking they saved humanity from patient zero.

The last thing you want to do is to be fiddling with a mask anyways. Hands near face adjusting masks is terrible. Washing hands is much more effective than everyone walking around and fiddling with dirty masks.

Apple absolutely needs to reintroduce Touch ID. I’m holding off on the Iphone 12 singularly because of this. I’m almost expecting it to be in the 12S or whatever the next version is. I believe that Apple can get a iPad Air 4 type Touch ID implemented regardless of normal manufacturing timelines. Touch ID is slick and efficient. It should not had been removed in the first place.

Truth! And Touch ID is so slick and efficient.

and you can unlock your watch with your iPhone...... but not the other way around.

Apple is rushing things out. But people will buy them anyways! And people here will snidely defend apple’s decisions to ignore some obvious use cases while perfecting other.

What if you put on your mask and reset FaceID, or I just noticed they allow an alternate appearance.. try that yet?

TouchID also sucks in the winter because you have to take your warm gloves off.

Not as concentrated as having beams shot in my eyes. Like I said I don’t shine my remotes in my eyes. When I’m outside I wear sunglasses. To each their own. If I have to get a Face ID phone it’s back to the 6 number passcode for me.
