I wonder why Apple isn’t doing the same as GooglePay and uses PayPal as a partner? In Neuland Germany Banks like ING announce that „people don’t ask for wireless or mobile payment“, which is more or less the attitude of most german banks.

hmmm? google pay had much lesser supported banks than the ones which are announced for apple pay.... . i would like paypal@apple pay, too though

You must be living in another Germany ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It will be the biggest launch with the most partners since the original launch in the US

So one major bank and a bunch of small banks plus not worth to mention fintechs is „the biggest launch”?

American Express
• Boon
• Bunq
• Comdirect
• Deutsche Bank
• Fidor Bank
• Hanseatic Bank
• HypoVereinsbank
• N26
• Santander
• VIMPay

The major banks in this list Deutsche and santander have both around five million private customers, Hypo around 4, the Comdirekt around two million and the others in that list are much below those numbers.

So Apple reaches around 16 million customers in a market of over 100 million bank accounts in private sector.

That is not big, that isn’t even small.

GooglePay with PayPal partnership can be used with all those 100 million accounts, that is huge!

But you give a good example of the Neuland citizen :)

Since you mentioned Germany will be the biggest launch since the initial Apple Pay launch in the US i wonder If that’s true if you count the user base. I mean yeah it’s lots of banks but how many people is it actually? Take Russia for example when they launched Apple Pay there was only sberbank and you wouldn’t consider it a big launch would you? But sberbank has over 30 mio customers so it was a huge launch indeed. Germany is not getting close to that right? So is it really the biggest launch after the US? It surely isn’t ...

So what would be a „big launch“ for you? Hmmm would be a launch with only S and VR a big launch?

A few weeks back people were complaining about launches with only a few banks or some service providers. Now there is a long list of launch partners. And people are still complaining. Some sort of German disease?
What’s is your KPI for a big launch? Count of banks? Market share of the Banks? Count of bank accounts?

If the last two ... you would have to say, Apple Pay is dead on arrival as long as S and VR do not join in H2/2019.

@docfred

Chill bro you guys said it was the biggest launch since the US launch. I just said it’s all relative and depends on which factors you base your conclusion on.

Im not complaining but you should give credit where credits due. And honestly Apple Pay has been four years in the making so it’s not that huge of a launch as you people make it out to be. I can launch with 20 banks doesn’t matter if it’s small banks with little amount of customers. So how do you measure? I measure how many people are actually able to use Apple Pay with their current bank. And that’s not as much as in lots of other countries where Apple Pay launched. And if you compare it to gpay with PayPal support it’s no where near as overwhelming as you guys say it is. Of course this could all change if Apple Pay Cash were to be introduced ...

Germany most certainly isn't the biggest launch since the US. The UK and Poland take that 1st and 2nd place there. But it's damn close to it.

My comdirect VISA now shows T&Cs again. Also they are updating their website from now until 1am... I can't access my personal account right now. As their card provisioning runs via a generated code through the online banking (and not via the app), Apple Pay should hopefully show up in there soon.

comdirect is back up.

Poland? With a nearly non existant iOS user base? Really? ;)

So how do we measure a big launch?

It was debit. Preparing for the AP launch I ordered a MC debit card last week and asked about the launch date but the guy in the local DB branch didn’t know anything except for later this year.

Do you think that we will be able to pay more than 20€ with AP in Germany? I thought it was always possible, but then I saw this page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207435

As groceries are expensive nowadays ;)

Could be possible. You have to enter the PIN from 25€ anyway for payments at the cashier with a contactless payment. But for me this doesn't make sense, especially if you pay via ApplePay, I think it's hard not to be the right owner.

Yes, you’ll be able to pay for things that cost more than 25€. Almost all terminals in Germany are correctly set up to accept CDCVM, meaning your fingerprint replaces the PIN as a verification method.
Only terminals which are not set up to differ between Apple Pay and a contactless card have issues with amount higher than 25€ when using Apple Pay.

This page says that for France, you might not be able to use Apple Pay for purchases over 20€ but when I had Apple Pay from Boon FR, I could easily spent more that 20€ several times.
