Just used Apple Way on the web on my MacBook Pro at The Trainline. Very cool. First web implementation of Apple Pay in the UK I've seen.

Made my first £30+ purchase with Apple pay today. £55 worth of unleaded at my local Esso station.

Where about was this??

We have 3 Esso garages locally all very modern (subway greggs etc)... ran by a company called Euro Garages. None of which have even contactless card readers.

I've connected Euro Garages the garage that runs them; they have said they are keen to implement contactless however Esso's card processing software isn't up to scratch yet and they are having similar issues with the Shell branded garages they run. Contacting Esso wasn't much help neither.

Its crazy that I can go in buy a subway & a cake from greggs; but not petrol.... all three brands are operated by the same franchise :'(.

I spend more time complaining about stores then I do using them haha

It was in my home town Oakham, Rutland. I noticed a while back they have a new card reader that says "insert or tap" or words to that effect. It's not a reader I've seen anywhere else, non colour screen. The next time I go in I'll try and look for a make/model number. The receipt says device verified.

I saw someone buy a Christmas tree from a local place with Apple Pay which was more than £30 yesterday too. Seems stupid that these small/independent places fully support Apple Pay but Tesco doesn't. They still insist that the limit is set by the banks and is out of their control.

I was in Tesco at the weekend and I use Apple Pay all the time that I literally forgot that the £30 limit was there. I still tried Apple Pay as the reader showed the contactless logo and it read the device but stated I needed to insert my card so it still isn't set up properly. The cashier thought I was crazy and quite rudely told me there's a limit of £30 for contactless. I then gave her a quick and polite lecture on how the £30 limit doesn't need to be there when paying with devices that can verify the cardholder being present. The more people know...

I had a thought today and then wondered if Apple Pay does this already.

I was looking through my Visa statement, and almost every entry required some heavy thought. There was a lot of "Amazon UK" purchases which mean nothing, lots of "Waitrose" and "John Lewis" which again mean nothing, and several entries which bear no resemblance to the shop's name.

If I buy stuff on Apple Pay, can I log in and actually see a copy of the receipt? For example, if I clicked on one of the "Waitrose" entries, would I see a copy of my till receipt and therefore exactly what I bought?

No. You can scan a My John Lewis card in store though and it will upload a receipt to your account on their website.

I get the impression they'd rather leave the limit in place to push people to use their PayQuik rubbish instead

This sort of functionality - where Apple Pay, Barclaycard or whatever - centralised all your receipts and warranties would be excellent and actually be a reason to adopt the technology.

Technology should be smart. Apple Pay is a dumb addition to paying for things. All it does is remove the need to put in a PIN from what I can see.

that would require monumental investment from every POS manufacturer in the world. add in the fact that some retailers develop their own POS software themselves... it'd be a huge headache to even get close to that. i'm pretty sure the banks only know where you spent money, not what you spent it on.

I've got to be post as I work for the company but I can't understand why higher up can't see it's not down to Visa/MasterCard/American Express-and that'd it reduce fraud in store.

Strangely PayQwik scans your Clubcard at the time of the transaction whereas the recently updated Clubcard app means you have to scan the barcode/QR code first before using Apple Pay.

They should've followed Walgreen's over in the U.S. and copied their implementation of loyalty.

In terms of businesses supporting Apple Pay for £30 and higher they really do need to communicate with people who work on the shop floor.

Was in Boots earlier today (Derby) and the friendly girl at the till said: "Oh, that won't work over £30". Wasn't funny with her but just said I was told Boots do allow it over £30. She said lets try it and see what happens-and of course it worked fine.

Not her fault whatsoever; bad communication from the relevant channels IMHO.

having spent the first 6 years of my working life in a fairly large clothing and food retailer, i can assure you there's plenty of friendly girls out there on the checkouts who could be told every hour and the message still wouldn't sink in.

True but the person in question seemed pretty clued up rather than someone who lets things go in one ear and out the other!

Anyone know if Wetherspoons take over £30?

According to: http://contactless.life/retailers/ it would seem so from the table here.

@Paul_W Thank you! It's just so annoying our Esso's (and local petrol station) are franchised and do not know their head from tale!

This was response from BP Customer service on the 21st of November -

"Thank you for your email.

All the sites should accept this method once the upgrades have gone through in their system.

Hopefully this is all done by now, however we can't confirm that every single site had no problem upgrading the system."

This was in response to my email below

"Good Evening, I was wondering if you are able to confirm whether all of your BP owned stations are now accepting Apple Pay above the standard £30 threshold previously set.

I was advised that your systems we’re being upgraded throughout the network and all of your tills would accept Apple Pay limitless (above £30) by November"

How do I know if it's a BP owned branch or not?

The nearest BP Garage to me (Derby) is franchised; only know this because of their receipts.

Their site finder doesn't really indicate which are wholly owned by BP either-would be helpful if they distinguished so we knew where Apple Pay is >£30.

I guess the ones near me aren't as they show as Rontec on my statements.

Its not always very easy to find out.... as mentioned above you can sometimes tell from their receipts. Others have the name of the franchise plastered all over the side of the station. I guess you could email them and ask.

I don't know the ins and outs; but surely a franchise needs to be licensed and as part of the license there would be a licensing agreement; in which BP could say as part of the agreement Apple Pay (above £30) needs to be implemented. Whether this is the case or not is anyones guess however.

Also for anyone that cares I have contacted the below supermarkets -

Sainsburys have advised that their rollout (albeit snails pace) of contactless will include Apple Pay above £30
Tesco are still confused as to what Apple Pay (above £30 is); I have escalated as a complaint to try and get info out of them.
Morrisons have confirmed they are working on a software update to ensure all existing stores with contactless tills also support Apple Pay above £30 payments. Saying 'very soon'.

Two companies that are really annoying me at the moment are Dominos & Booking.com for Apple Pay in app integration... both we're listed on the initial launch of Apple Pay. Both are declining support stating it was a mistake by Apple. Similar story with the Argos app...
