Odd thing at the weekend. Took some trousers back to M&S as they didn't fit (length not expanded waistline!). Handed over receipt and for some reason, as I'd used Apple Pay, the last 4 digits of the card that are shown on the receipt were different to the card I used (different to any card in my wallet in fact). I had to get my refund in a credit voucher instead. Not a major problem but something to bear in mind, presumably due to tokenisation?

Looks like they didn't know how to use the system properly.

How do I return an item that I bought using Apple Pay in a store?
The cashier can use the Device Account Number to find the purchase and process the return, just as they would with a traditional credit or debit card payment. To see the last four or five digits of the Device Account Number:

  • For your iPhone or iPad, go to Wallet & Apple Pay, tap the card, and tap
    iphone6-ios9-applepay-info-icon.png
    .
  • For your Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to the My Watch tab, tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap your card.
If the cashier needs your card details to process the return, you can follow the same steps for making a payment:

  1. On the device that you used to make the original payment, select the card that you want to be refunded. Remember to use the card registered within Apple Pay, not your physical card.
  2. On your iPhone, hold the device near the reader and authorize the return with Touch ID or passcode. On your Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the display of your Apple Watch within an inch of the contactless reader.
Depending on the return and refund policies of the store, it may take up to several days for the return transaction to appear on your credit or debit card statement. Apple Pay activity is also included on your credit and debit card statements.

If you'd looked it up before going you could have told them what to do.

The tills at my (Tesco) store are unable to process a refund via contactless and so we ask for the physical card for a refund.

Often in retail when the clerk requires the same card for a refund they physically do not actually require it. We can process refunds back to anything so long as if it was a card purchase it's back to a card and if a cash purchase back to cash etc. The whole 'same card for refund' is more for streamlining the accounting should a refund be questioned or an audit digs deep.

At the moment since a device number cannot be viewed entirely I'm unsure as to how a refund can be issued back to a user when contactless refunds aren't an option.

I didn't actually mention that I'd used Apple Pay, so they didn't pick up on it. Thanks for the link though - useful for the future!

Yeah that would be the case; because the last 4 digits in the recipes are the device number. This is unique to your card & your device; check you virtual card in your wallet and this should match your receipt.

Remember the device number is different per card per device.

M&S should have been able to refund it back via Apple Pay; there is a published process online via Apple support somewhere. As M&S never receive your card number when purchasing via Apple Pay - the only thing they can go by is your device number.

Most employees will probably not understand the refund process via Apple Pay.... probably why you ended up with a gift card :(

** oops sorry looks like already been answered above....

It might vary restaurant to restaurant but the McDonald's at Markeaton Island has stickers on the self-service machines and at the POS saying contactless/Apple Pay is ok under £30.

Haven't been in for a few weeks so that might've changed.

There's a pub opposite Tesco in Mickleover (Flamin' Grill) has Verified by Consumer Device on their receipts so next time I spend more than £30 in there I'll try it :)

Yeah I visited a different Mcdonalds today and no device verified :(.... so it depends on the franchise by looks of it

Does the Tesco store you work in have PayQwiq yet?

My store had new self service machines the other week-the button is enabled but the service isn't live (yet).

Am told (via Twitter) it's being rolled out nationwide in the next few weeks.

We don't have Payquik yet, can't see an option either.

We won't be getting the self-service terminals unfortunately since we are on a fuel site!

I wish Tesco had invested their time into the the auto-loyalty card feature that Apple Pay offers instead, would be much cooler.

I agree-would make for a more seamless checkout experience.

Although I have my discount card now I hardly use it-as I've a Clubcard with barcode from years ago I can use the Wallet app to scan it at work.

Okay so I don't save 10% on my purchases but I don't mind TBH.

It's not totally bad news as any till that supports scanning PayQwik supports scanning a Clubcard in Wallet.

Well we've started 2017 and there's still much more progress to be made on the mobile wallet front in my opinion.
I was hoping we'd have loyalty card functionality by now (like Walgreens) for at least a few retailers over here, but not one. Such a shame. Hopefully we'll have some movement this year. If rumours about Sainsbury's offering >£30 Apple Pay is true then others should follow suit.
I'd love for more websites and apps to accept it also. M&S have recently added functionality to their app which is nice.

I think Apple Pay & the android alternatives are still seen as niche and assumed to be only used by a small minority of users. Of my family & friends who could use Apple Pay, I think only one does. Oddly enough, if it was offered more on websites, I think it would be used more. In store, contactless is so easy that Apple Pay etc isn't really much quicker (or not seem to be). Online, using it to save entering card details would be a big bonus, so I'm at a loss to understand why it's not being offered.

PayPal seems to have gained a lot of traction as a quick & simple payment method, yet I hate Paypal and have actually closed my account with them - don't trust them with my card details for one thing but also assume they track purchase patterns.

I'm not sure if that one is true unfortunately!

We have the latest scanners which can scan device screens and we often scan clubcards within Apple Wallet but on the tills there is no function to take payment via PayQwik.

Completely agree!

It's a bit frustrating that the Privilege cards don't have barcodes, I also feel that Tesco probably aren't too fussed about sorting it out either.

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been asked before.

Can you use Apple Pay for cashback? I was in store at Tesco today and asked for £30 cashback and once I got my phone out the cashier immediately said that wont work, you need to input an actual pin number for cashback.

Cant find any definitive answers online, anyone shed any light?

In the UK cash back is not available with Apple Pay, in the US I believe you can use Apple Pay on some cash machines by certain banks.

Yes you need to complete Chip & PIN for cash back on a Debit card.

The PP is right in saying some American banks allow Apple Pay at their ATMs.

Barclays are meant to be allowing contactless withdrawals inside their branches sometime this year; think the most allowed will be £100.

They might enable PayQwiq remotely through a software update when the trial is complete and the service launches nationwide.

As for the discount card in Apple Pay I bet they won't due to people being able to screen shot the QR code and sending it to others to be used fraudulently?

I think this already exists on Barclays ATM's, I saw one the other day on the Team Valley Trading Estate on Tyneside outside the Barclays branch which had a contactless reader fixed to the ATM.

The external ATM at their Heanor branch also has a contactless reader. Did try it with my plastic card before the news re: withdrawals but it didn't do anything.

I'll give the one I saw a try next time I'm in the area and report back if it works.

I'll do the same next time I'm in Heanor town centre.

I feel like a right idiot... could never understand why I couldn't scan my Clubcard on some of the older self service machines in Tesco.

Turns out when you're ready to do it you need to choose Clubcard on the screen then scan the barcode. D'oh!

Santander have these contactless ATMs too. I've used them a few times with my contactless card, but every time I've tried to use Apple Pay with them my phone brings my card up automatically but then says 'Could not complete transaction' or something and the ATM doesn't do anything, so I don't think these machines can work with Apple Pay just yet. Although Barclays may be different!

I think that may be the case but often we have had engineers in to complete small software changes so who knows!

It could definitely be that but I guess the privilege card works with PayQwiq so that is a similar situation?

From what I've read up on PayQwiq when you scan your phone it knocks the 10% off too.

I'm going to carry on using Apple Pay and use my discount card when it's really needed; I know we're still capped at £30 but that's my preferred method of payment.

Yes my thoughts exactly, I'm not keen on having a payment method that only works in one store.

Out of interest do Esso have a say in which payment methods are accepted in Express forecourt sites or is the decision solely down to Tesco?

The decision is solely down to Tesco. It pretty much works out that everything inside is Tesco and everything outside is Esso - a pain when customers have issue with signage on the forecourt and we have to explain that we have no say whatsoever on the matter!
