I was at BP the other day topping up my Amazon account (for the free £5 credit here for anyone interested) and they had a card machine (this one I think) I'd never seen before. Wonder if this is the same as the one you saw. They used to have the terminals where the contactless reader was on the side like @iGeek2014 mentioned.
That’s the one!

I did like the contactless on the side though, great for the Apple Watch!

What are people’s thoughts on this Apple Pay cash ( when it becomes available in this country)? Not sure that it will be much use to me. I believe that it can be used as a pre paid debit card.

They have the same PIN terminal at my local Texaco garage in Heanor; next time I spend over £30 I'll see if it works (Apple/Android Pay logos are on the device).

I think it'd come in handy from time to time e.g. if someone sends you money for your birthday etc but doesn't really differentiate from PayPal etc other than it's limited to iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch running iOS 11.

I'll give it a go once it makes it's way over here.
The only issue I have with it will be the time it takes for the money to transfer to my bank if I want to. I know you can spend the money you receive on the cash card anywhere Apple Pay is accepted but I'd prefer the money in my bank if I want it. The fact that faster payment transfers are pretty much instant makes me think the people I tend to owe/lend money to will stick with that.

I think it’ll be great.

PayPal is the main competitor, but I see very few people using it for person to person payments.

PayM (where you pay someone for your bank using their phone number) is good for hiding your bank details from someone, but still requires them to login to their bank and has been poorly promoted.

I see most people using it when a friend owes you money but as we live in a cashless society, these transactions are a pain.

Or something like when a group of friends want to pay for a meal and most people don’t have cash on them...

I see most people withdrawing any cash they receive from the card pretty much immediately. There’s little benefit to leaving it on the Apple Pay cash card.

Aside from being old and grumbling that two games of bowling for me and my 2 children came to over £30, Apple Pay worked fine in tenpin today. I had to explain (again) that Apple Pay doesn’t have the £30 limit.
You’d think by now everyone would know!

I didn’t give them the chance in F and B’s to say I couldn’t pay with Apple Pay. I just whipped my watch out and paid. A lot of shops still don’t get Apple Pay so most of the time I just say to them I’m going to pay by card or I’m paying contactless and then just pay with my watch before they have the chance to say they don’t take Apple Pay.

Same here; unless I know they definitely don’t support payments over £30.

Nearly three years later you’d think people would be more aware of Android/Apple and Samsung Pay allowing for transactions over the standard contactless limit.

Maybe now Visa and MasterCard are making all contactless transactions online after the news whereby people were reporting cards as lost/stolen but still being able to have fraudulent purchases made we’ll see more support for digital wallet payments.

Sorry to bump this thread but it seemingly went quiet at the end of last year... anyone found any new places to spend more than £30 on Apple Pay here in the U.K.?!
Tried it in ikea at the end of last year and it worked, was about £140 or so. Tried it in tescos however and it didnt work :/

I would love it if HMV started accepted payment above £30 in store, i think most places should be doing this now.

I’ll add Shell petrol stations - both in-app and at cashier counters.

Can anyone make this a wiki thread? Would be a very useful resource. Incredible that Tesco still aren’t on this list - a very obvious gap!

Could add additional issues to this list - e.g. no Amex or in-store only (most are I think).

I saw on twitter a week or so ago, someone on their twitter team said that the terminals needed a hardware update to support it. Not sure I believe that.

I know my local Esso petrol station supports unlimited. Haven't got a clue if that means they all do though

The Gosta Green pub in Aston, Birmingham takes payments over £30 as I paid for lunch with a colleague and it was £28.30 or something, but I got charged £283.00.

I got a refund, but then had an argument with a member of staff telling me it was impossible, even though I showed him the notification on my phone *AND* my bank statement showing the money had gone out. Still, I got my money back so it

Thanks for reviving the thread, wasn't expecting such a flurry of activity, haha.

Foolishly hoping now Sainsbury's are acquiring Nectar that they may copy Tesco and allow for customers to use the Wallet app (without the need for a third party).

In terms of Tesco weren't they trialling higher value payments in certain stores late last year; near their HQ?

Tesco seem to be pushing their own Tesco+ app for contactless payments, it can do >£30 transactions and has Clubcard integration, it’s probably the entire reason that Tesco are dragging their heels with proper higher value ApplePay transactions.

That’s true but I wonder how many people would prefer Apple Pay >£30 as well as being able to authenticate Clubcard with Touch/Face ID?

So basically we just need to wait for them to realise they are wasting their time and money with the service before investing in Apple Pay.
