If I was to say use Apple pay in a off licence that charged a fee for using your card, would I still by changed a fee for Apple pay?

Yes, as it is still technically a card payment.

The practice of charging fees is an annoying one, all the local corner shops and off licences near me do it - as do most of the takeaways.

Bit nervous using it now after the fail in Caffe Nero! Not a great first experience of it in store to simply not work and to look a bit silly.

I realise there are many things that could go wrong, not least a problem with the terminal itself.

Will try again in another store...

Had my first Apple Pay fail - Caffe Nero. Touched my watch over the contactless reader, and nothing happened on the watch - the contactless terminal then displayed "INSERT CARD" and I had to then use the physical Amex card in the chip and pin reader and manually type my pin.

When using the contactless cards a random authorisation will be required every so often which asks you to enter your card and enter the pin (old school) - will this happen with Apple Pay payments or will the bank system recognise the difference between Apple Pay payments and contactless card payments?

If not, this might explain why you were asked to enter a pin but I don't really know!

It shouldn't happen as it is the card that tells the reader to ask for a PIN rather than the reader just deciding to ask for one normally unless there is some sort of issue.

If at first you don't succeed; pay, pay again.

Just tried in Boots and - it worked!

When I was told the payment amount, I was just looked at blankly while she expected me to either get out a card or get out some cash, so there was an awkward moment while I said "er, card payment please". The card reader then just said INSERT CARD. Tried Apple Pay anyway, and nothing happened. She then tapped something on her screen which activated contactless payment on the card reader, and then it worked.

Aye I can see this happening a lot - "contactless please" will probably be my go-to request to save time.

I guess Apple Pay won't work in a restaurant then when they bring you the card reader and you slot in your card and punch in your pin number? I'm out for a curry tomorrow night - was hoping to maybe try Apple Pay there!!!!!

Some of those card readers are contactless enabled, you just need to see if the contactless symbol comes up on the screen.

I just used this in my local Co-op store. It immediately appeared to work, and showed the amount in the 'Last Transaction' section, with the time 'Just Now'. However, the checkout lady said it hadn't worked - she was very pleasant and patient about it, and asked a senior to come over.

I showed them the phone showing the last transaction, and they said they were happy with that (it was only £3.89 anyway).

Amex contact less isn't supported by cafe neros old terminals so that'll be why. It would have worked with a Visa or MasterCard.

More places should be like EAT, I know there the contactless reader comes on by default without the customer having to say how they want to pay.
Thats how I expected contactless to work when it first launched in the UK, after the Barclaycard advert with the waterslide. I don't know why more retailers haven't moved to get it working like that.

I'm more impressed you can get a sit down curry for under £20 in London!

Must be an issue with the way some readers / till systems work? I know that the self service Tesco tills near me, which support Contactless, require you to EITHER choose Card or Contactless as your payment method, which I find bizarre.
