I'm still surprised that contactless hasn't expanded out of London. There's contactless points on barriers at my local stations of Newbury and Reading, so I've always expected it to come, but many years later, nothing. Wonder what's the holdup!

They're dragging their feet, contactless has been around for ages. Glad they're at least attempting it though. Be nice if it expanded out more!

Well the flyer is for staff, not public consumption, on the basis that it's kept within the business. They need to prepare their staff, so why shouldn't they share the date to them, so they know when to be ready?

This flyer was released on a (private) Facebook group for a local Waitrose branch to all levels of staff including the warehouse staff, cafe & deli staff, cleaners and cashiers. Not exactly 'top secret'.

Nice to have some confirmation though.

14th here we come!

The ones with it greyed out should should just be ones with old card readers. As far as I'm aware, all the ones with new card readers should have it enabled. Compare to Sainsbury's who all have the new card readers now but no mention of contactless anywhere.

My local tescos has had the option for 9 months or more, but still no new card readers.

Still, there's things that are meant to be business privileged. We have memos for some things where I work, common sense dictates that it's stuff that shouldn't be made public. You can bet the person responsible will be disciplined.

I highly doubt this since the post was made to a lot of employees and the image contains no link to said person - this is why I think the general attitude to this information is quite lax.

...so when this goes live next Monday, how do we actually go about adding our cards on the iPhone to use for Apple pay? Is this done through the Passbook app because I currently see no options on there for this?

Yep.

The backend of Passbook points at a JSON file which lists which counties are available for Apple Pay, as soon as the JSON file changes, it'll be allowed on devices with the region set as UK.

You'll be able to add your credit/debit card via the Passbook app or under Settings>Passbook & Apple Pay.

It'll ask for your iTunes password; follow the on-screen steps, agree to the Terms and Conditions outlined by your bank and voila!

Companies use Facebook for internal communication! I'm not saying you're wrong, I just never thought they would.

A few questions about using Apple Pay on TFL answered here......

Apple Pay coming soon
1 July 2015

Apple Pay coming soon
Effective date: July 2015

Background
When Apple Pay launches in the UK in July, it will work for pay as you go
travel on our services
We cannot advise you of the launch date yet. Although we know that it will be in July, Apple
have not publically stated their launch date. A further update will be sent when this is
known.

Acceptance
Customers with an
 iPhone 6
 iPhone 6 plus
 Apple Watch
will be able to link some payment card accounts to Apple Pay and then use their iPhone or
Apple Watch to make contactless payments. Customers who are unsure if they can use
Apple Pay should check with their card issuer.
Acceptance of credit and debit cards issued outside the UK linked to Apple Pay is similar to
contactless payment cards. Some may charge overseas transaction fees and some may
not work; customers should check with their card issuer.

Using Apple Pay
In general, using Apple Pay will be no different from using pay as you go with a contactless
payment card.
 Customers will need to touch in and out on rail services to pay the right fare and only
touch in on buses and trams. They will need to:
1. Activate the payment app on their phone or watch
2. Touch it on a reader within 1 minute of activating the app
3. Ensure that they touch the top of their iPhone on the yellow reader or if using an
Apple Watch, touch it’s face on the reader
We will provide you photographs of how Apple devices should be touched on a card
reader in our next briefing.

 When a device has been read successfully, as well as the green light displaying on the yellow card reader, the customer’s:
o iPhone will beep and gently vibrate
o Apple Watch will beep
 Customers must make sure they use the same device (card, iPhone or Apple Watch) when they travel so they
o do not have incomplete journeys
o they benefit from daily and weekly capping
 This also applies if the same payment card is linked to more than one phone or watch; each one is treated as a completely separate payment device. So customers need to choose which phone or watch they want to pay with and use the same one for all their travel
 Customers who have both an iPhone and an Apple Watch will get a notification on their watch if their iPhone was read successfully. Staff should be aware that this could be confusing for customers; they will need to remember which device they touched in with and touch out with the same
 If customers keep a contactless payment or Oyster card in their phone case, they should remove it before touching their iPhone on a yellow reader. If they don’t, they could pay for their travel with a card they did not intend to be charged
 Apple Pay is recognised by inspectors’ card readers (RID); customers should activate the payment app before touching their device on the RID. Contactless payment card inspection rules apply
 The read speed of Apple Pay at our card readers is about the same as a contactless payment card
 Customers must make sure they have enough battery on their phone/watch to complete their journey. If they don’t and:
o it runs out of battery in the middle of a rail journey, they will not be able to touch out at the end and could be charged a maximum fare
o If an inspector asks them to touch their iPhone or Apple Watch on a RID, it will not be able to be read. The customer could be liable for a penalty fare
Adding Apple Pay to a TfL online account
The Apple Pay app only shows the last payment or transaction made and a recent history of daily charges applied to the account.
Customers will be able to see their full journey and payment history by signing up for and adding Apple Pay to a TfL online account. They will also be able to:
 Get email alerts if there's an issue with their iPhone or Apple Watch which might stop them from using it to travel
 Apply for refunds for incomplete journeys
 Download their payment and journey history as a CSV or PDF file
 Pay unpaid fares
To sign up for an online account, customers will need:
 Their plastic card account details (in the same way as adding a contactless payment card)
o card number
o expiry date
o the security code (CVV)

 Once customers have added their card account details, they will be able to see their Apple Pay devices as separate card records in their TfL account. They will also see their card if it has been used to travel on our services
o Initially, their plastic card and iPhone and/or Apple watch will look like identical cards on their ‘my cards’ screen
o Customers are advised to provide nicknames (eg ‘my iPhone’ or ‘my Apple Watch’) to be able to distinguish easily between the different devices
 Customers can phone TfL Customer Services on 0343 222 1234. They will need to provide their (plastic) card account details (card number, expiry date and security code) to enable Customer Service Agents to see their journey and payment history
Setting up Apple Pay
Full details of how to set up Apple Pay on an iPhone or Apple Watch are available on Apple’s web site.
For more information see https://www.apple.com/uk/apple-pay/
If you have any questions or comments about this briefing please email Grizelda Hafter

That could cause a problem. The assumed backup of, say, touching in using your iPhone linked to your Visa card, something happening to the phone (let's say you are delayed down there and you end up running out of battery) and then touching out with the Visa card rather than the iPhone won't work as they are treated separately.

Unfortunately it has to work that way, not just because of Apple's device-specific card numbers, but also to prevent multiple people travelling using different cards / devices and only being charged once.

That said, if your phone died and you had to make your last journey of the day using a card, TfL's helpline are usually very good at refunding any excess charges.

It'll be interesting to see if the banks and Credit Card companies make an announcement in the next day or so about next weeks launch. Ive been keeping an eye on the First Direct and Amex twitter accounts, and they seem to be suggesting they'll give a bit of warning before it hits. Perhaps announcements tommorrow (1 week before launch)?

It'd be great if the launch partners advised people a week before the actual activation date... Means we can start checking at midnight on the 14th haha!

Gives us another week of coming back to this topic and debating what could / couldn't be happening. I doubt anything official will be announced, which means we can continue to make up what we think might happen.

Just tried to add my Natwest card and got one step further than I did last week (before it tells me to contact my card issuer)

If the official date is the 14th I wonder if some banks will allow you to add cards a little earlier, as they'll be preparing their servers etc.

Also does anyone know the authorization process for the UK? Will you have to call your bank for verification?

I imagine Apple will want to have as many people set up and ready to go on the 14th as possible. That said I think a lot of (less tech savvy) people would assume that if they could set their card up the service was fully activated so Apple would have to make it very clear it doesn't go live until the 14th to avoid embarrassing checkout fails!

...still think its a little cumbersome to have to open an app to use Apple Pay though - you should just be able to swipe your phone against the reader and it automatically picks up your card details.

Isn't that pretty much what happens? You hold your phone against the contactless reader, it pops up with your cards, you choose which one and verify with Touch ID and off you go...?

Edit: yeah, check it out here:

True, but I use a different card in waitrose to the one I use in Costa. I'd prefer to make sure I've got the right one open before paying.
What may be fiddly is paying in costa. First open the costa card in passbook to get points then select the right card to pay. That'll need some practice on the watch...?

You can't do that until iOS 9.

Will you need a mobile signal or wifi signal to use apple pay?

Agreed, remember your contactless credit/debit cards don't require 4G or wifi do they; I'll be able to buy stuff with nothing but my watch on me, which is my only concern as from a week today I'll be capable of buying chocolate from the corner shop on my way back from the gym and jogs!

NatWest app already updated to support verification.

Yeah for me the costa just down the road and a hot chocolate will be a big temptation.. I'll have to mentally put myself off knowing I can't get my loyalty points and pay with just my watch for a month or three yet :)
