“I don't care about losing privacy because I have nothing to hide” is no different to saying
“I don't care about losing free speech because I have nothing to say”

What people who say the first line really mean is “I don’t object to losing some privacy because I believe there is a net gain in stopping bad guys doing bad things”.

Not saying I don't care about losing privacy…. I do, but believe it is the lesser evil.

They want to be able to spy on people.

That's it. They'll make every excuse under the sun, talking about "protecting the children" or whatnot, but in the end, it's about spying on people.

I'm pissed off about this. There's a good chance it will happen in the US too considering the political situation here.
Yes because the government want to read about your messages to your partner & use that information against you or your browsing history on certain websites

The discussion here completely misses the point. Every prosecutor tries to analyze the motivation for actions. And he will probably quickly come to the conclusion that the British government probably only implements it, but does not initiate it, because it does not benefit its services at all. So: Qui bono? Ideas for solutions requested!

Wwoowww.. what the hell! How does that now affect me as a Brit, my mum, my sister, Briton law, niece, nephew.. ALL using Apple devices!
Disgusted Apple has caved in and done this. Utterly disgusted also I'm very confused exactly what the government will do with this? It won't see any iMessages, or screen FaceTime calls?
What is the fascist Labour government up to...

And the news just said the government will need a court order to gain access which I thought they would anyway?
Do you, your Mum, sister, niece, nephew actually have ADP turned on? If not, then presumably you weren’t bothered anyway and nothing will be any different for you.

Nope, I vote Reform UK.
So you feel a party which is closer to the fascist right will give you the freedoms you crave? I like some of what Reform say, but where they are on the political spectrum does not lead me to think they would be pro-freedom. The Liberal Democrats would be more suitable for you if you are against the erosion of our democracy.

I'm in the UK and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I wasn't even aware of ADP. Nobody I know is aware of it either. What sort of things are people doing that they feel they need such security?

Why should the UK government declare it a crime for companies to mention that they received their demand to disable encryption on servers? That doesn't bother you in the slightest?

What constitutes a threat seems very up to interpretation too, given a woman in the USA was charged with threatening to carry out a mass shooting or act of terrorism for telling her insurance company “you people are next”.
Let's see how that one pans out. She should be entitled to a payout, as what she said is protected under the 1A. There'd be zero chance of that in the UK.

But yes, I'm an advocate for true freedom of speech. I think people should have the right to say whatever they want without fear of cancellation or imprisonment. Who becomes the arbiter of what can and cannot be said? And why should they be trusted to enforce it responsibly?

Fascist 😂 in no way is Reform UK a fascist party, they are a party that focus on putting Britain first just like Trump has done with putting America first, there is nothing wrong with that.

On this I very much agree

Remember --- things like this don't change overnight and the direction right now is very bad
Indeed. It will probably come as no surprise given my comments that I fall somewhere just right of center/libertarian, so naturally I just won't see things as being dire at this point in time in the same way that perhaps you do. However, I'll stand up to anyone on either side if push comes to shove and their bombastic rhetoric turns into something much worse. As long as there are enough people like us out there - and I truly think there are - then I believe we will be fine. I'm a bit of a history buff and I find solace in knowing that the last 250 years of our country's existence is riddled with all kinds of close calls and dark moments that we somehow always managed to endure and carry on.

No, it really doesn't. I've always assumed the internet is a public network and someone somewhere can see your messages or files. I'm a computing teacher and we make sure students realise when they log on they are entering a public domain. What is good is that this news will make more people aware of it.

This is a test unlike any we've seen, certainly in the lifetime of anyone alive right now
(the internal nature of the challenge is highly unique in any recent time period

Glad to hear you're ready to stand up - me too!

I carefully didn't say they were fascist. I'm on the right myself and appreciate that Reform is closer to fascism than other mainstream parties. I see the political spectrum as a circle. Lib Dems right at the top, Labour and Conservative to each side, and Fascists and Communists (=anti freedom) opposite to the Liberal Democrats at the bottom of the circle.

How long will it be before iCloud Private Relay is ended, then iMessage and other end-to-end encryption.

Sure they will have VPNs on their radar too.

1984 for the UK is fully here and flowing along at full speed ahead.,

I work under the belief the government is already reading every message I send and able to access all my stored data.

Does anyone know what information Apple can disclose if hit with a court injunction demanding access to your data?

Has anything actually changed in the storage within the iCloud?

If it is only end-end encryption is switched off does this mean that uploads to the cloud are now unencrypted and can be interceptedted on route but data within iCloud is still secure?

My teacher used to explain to me decades ago why there is letter secrecy and why no letter carrier is allowed to open letters. Those were the good old days, when people still knew why this was necessary.

Authoritarian countries (at that time the GDR) were despised by Europe AND the USA because they automatically violated this POV.

I’d be willing to accept ‘free speech’ advocates the right to say abusive, hurtful, or racist things to me without fear of imprisonment, just as long as I can punch them in the face for doing so, with the same level of protection.

See? Then everyone’s happy!
