So anybody have 3 monitors working on the 5770 without spending the big bucks on the apple dual link converter? I have my 5770 working like a charm on my 1,1 in both boot camp and osx. Asus 27" monitor and vizio 42" HDTV via dvi to hdmi are working great, but would love to hook up my little 21" hp for extra desktop.

You don't need the Apple dual-link. Look on Amazon for an active MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapter.

I understand that in theory this should work. I was hoping for confirmation from somebody who actually tried it.

Seems we're able to get video working in just about any configuration you could want/need, but nobody's found a way to get audio out via the MDPs on pre-2010 Mac Pros.

'Tis frustrating, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

5770

Installed 5770 this morning in my 3,1. Super easy, and everything seems to be running fine.

I did an XBench with the old card and the new card, and the 2600 beat the 5770 in Quartz Graphics Test and OpenGL Graphics Test. The 5770 beat the 2600 in the User Interface Test. I was under the impression the 5770 would smoke the 2600 in the all the graphics tests. Not sure what's up with that, but the card appears to be running fine. Are those two tests not directly related to the card?

I wonder what's your result now.
I did the same upgrade like you did and I'm very interested if you downloaded a driver or even find one?
please let me know?

Anybody know if Apple Radeon 5770/5870s come with the Auxiliary-Power->6-pin PCI-E cables, or do I need to buy those separately?

I plan to get a 5870 for my macpro1,1, so I would need 2 cables.

one cable is in the box.
I think you need only 1.
my 2008 3.1 does need 1 cable.

I've seen many references to the 5870 needing 2 cables (see here)

That said, it looks like I am in luck because my X1900XT is using a 6-pin cable! This means that if the 5870 comes with a cable, I will have 2 cables to use.

So if you can absolutely confirm that the retail Apple 5870 comes with a 6-pin PCI-E Aux power cable, I'm golden.

My retail 5870 came with two cables.

All Mac Pros come with a card that requires no cables by default (cept for the 2010's), so the boxes always include as many cables as the card requires.

Does somebody installed a 5870 into a 1,1 MP with boot ROM version MP11.005C.B08?

Still no reports about this... am I wrong?

Lots of reports on this. EVERY Mac Pro can use the 5870. This includes EVERY 1,1 Mac Pro with different boot roms.

I forgot to specify that I'm looking for dual 3GHz 1,1 MPs.... AFAIK only dual 2,6GHz reports outhere!
There are many posts about 5770 installed on 1,1 MP with different boot ROMs but still almost anything about 5870.

I want to know fast is the 5870 compared to 5770 on a system like mine and not on one with two 2,6GHz CPUs.

If you took the time to read this thread and all the others regarding the 5870, you'll have seen that I am 'THE SOURCE.' I was one of the first, if not the first on the board, to confirm that it does indeed work fine -- I'm running a Mac Edition Radeon 5870 in my 1,1 Mac Pro, boot rom .B08, 3 Ghz quad, 5 GB of Ram.

There's been multiple people in these threads now that have also confirmed. All you have to do is go back a few pages and you'll see.

Ok thanks, I'll read older posts.... probably I've lost these posts because in the last 2-3 pages I've seen a lot talking about MDP audio issue and I've jumped to the end of the thread :)

No Problemo. Enjoy the new card. Huge leap in performance in Windows gaming!

I have MP11.005C.B08 and my 5870 is working using DVI but my miniDPs aren't working!

I am using mDP to DP cables to plug into my Dell monitor DP ports. The Dells see nothing...

I'm quite worried.

Is your software completely up to date? I'm running my 30" Apple monitor through the dvi port and my 20" Apple monitor through the mini display port. Both work fine.

Also, how many monitors are you trying to connect? You can only connect two monitors without the dual dvi accessory from Apple.

False alarm, turns out I wasn't pushing the mDP cable far enough into the 5870.

So for the record: macpro1,1 w/ Apple 5870 runs perfectly with 3 monitors (one DVI, 2 mDP->DP)

Thanks though!

Well, I can confirm, at least on my machine, that the audio out via MDPs is going to take some serious voodoo. I managed to get Pacifist to install the OS off of a 2010 Mac Pro disc, and though the OS works without a hitch (even takes my system settings from my 10.6.6 install), there is still no audio device listed for the MiniDisplayPorts. This means there's a machine check going on. Anybody here know where that check would be and how to inject a 1,1 (or whatever Mac Pro model number) listing into the file(s)?

This is turning out to be a real bummer considering the MDP audio out works flawlessly (including 8 channel LPCM) under Windows. Go go Apple's narcissistic machine checks. :(

How about running the 5870 under OS X for Steam (TF2, L4D, etc)?

This is what I'm afraid of - Apple blocking this feature (audio via MDP) on earlier MP's with the 5770/5870... on purpose! So much for the MP's huge price markup in exchange for expandability and upgrade potential. Hope this is further investigated. If this is true, I'm not a happy MP owner.

Such petty practices - not to mention Job's Blue Ray stubborn rant - give true grounds to Apple loathers.

Shame on you, Apple.
