I totally agree with this. Although I'd also add to it working with Endnote itself was worth many a drink or two. Now that I have Pages+Bookends+Papers, those days are over :)

I thought about moving to Bookends, but 2 of my grants are deeply collaborative and I couldn't imagine getting the other guys to move over. Not to mention the fact that my entire lab uses Endnote (after years of nagging from me) -- a big activation barrier to switching to Bookends, unfortunately.

And Papers is one of my favorite apps. Period.

Visio type drawing app

I was hoping to see a Visio type vector drawing app. A return of MacDraw and MacPaint. I know there are alternatives, but I wanted to see what Apple would come up with.

I was holding out for this update to buy a copy of iWork, so I'm glad I waited. But now I see the educational discount brings it down to only $71, where it was $40 before!

Do you think they'll have better deals in my University store?

can someone please tell me if their's an autosave feature built into iwork 09?

the usefulness of this feature has been debated in previous threads - but it's really important to me - i just dont remember to hit :apple:s frequently enough - resulting in me losing work on several occaisons with pages08.

thanks.

The "Institutional" price is still $40. If you bought your last copy from your university store for $40 the same deal should hold. The "regular" EDU price is $71.

It is, but you can always type them in to Spotlight instead of a calculator if you have leopard.

I should not have to manually calculate or use spotlight to calculate image sizes. This should just be built in. I have submitted feedback to this issue every release. I don't understand how they can ignore a large community of scientists that like to use macs. Writing grants with figures and diagrams and tons of references is annoying enough... Tied to word yet again...

The generic educational discount price for the last version was $71 too. If you use the same source you did last time, you should be able to get it for the same [$39] price.

Just out of curiosity, why the need for percentages? I'm a scientist too (actually, a pediatric oncologist, but I was a chemistry major in undergrad), and I'm having a hard time figuring out why the need to change image sizes by a certain percentage.

downloaded and playing with pages now - has the onscreen text quality dramatically improved or is it just my impression?

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has a typesetting standard for publications. This ensures that all the structures are the same size. Having chemical structures that are different sizes in different figures looks absolutely awful and unprofessional. The sizing standard is 75% reduction of the ACS 1996 standard stationary used in CambridgeSoft ChemDraw. MSWord and MSPowerpoint can do this no problem (however MSWord and Powerpoint 2008 have broken the ability to cut and paste back into ChemDraw - this bug is an issue with word and powerpoint, not ChemDraw - Awesome). Pages and Keynote cannot. They insist on handling the graphics by pixel, inch, centimeter, whatever.

EDIT: Scaling the images in ChemDraw before moving them to word or page or keynote, etc, does not work. It's not that simple. The reduction must occur within keynote and pages.

Also adapters for DVI to the current new LED display would be nice slash practical ...
But then if you brought the fancy new LED display you wouldn't have to buy a fancy new unibody to go with it. ;)

I imagine the reason why the 24" LED screen is cheap (for a 24" LED screen) is because Apple knows it only works with three computers in the world, which just so happen to be the three computers they make (Air, MacBook, Pro), the cheapest of which just so happens to cost $1,200 US.

Seems strange to offer 10.5 as a box set with the updated iLife and iWork.

Very strange, considering Mac users who buy software like this at retail probably have Leopard already AND those new to a Mac will already have Leopard (and iLife as well for that matter).

Apple must think they have enough customers who haven't upgraded to Leopard to justify it.

If they do the same thing for Snow Leopard then I may go for it to get iWork + Snow Leopard + iPhoto.

The other thing that puzzles me is iWork.com. Will this be part of the MobileMe pricing. Cause if it isn't it should be. Is suspect it won't though, cause Apple can then charge for:
iLife
iWork
Mobile Me Subscription
iWork.com Subscription

Every single year!

Urgent Help

i just got a new macbook on christmas day with ilife and only a few days later purchased iwork 08. What the heck am i supposed to do right now. I want both ilife 09 and iwork 09 especially considering it doesnt do alot of things i need it to that iwork 09 apparently does.

what are my options...can i upgrade for a small fee or can i get on the phone with them?

can i please get an answer to the above question, thanks.

You're screwed - you'll need to pay the full price.

Does pages come close to Office yet? Whilst I hate using Office... I find it has still much more functionality than the pathetic Pages (I love using Pages... but I hate it for it's simple-ness)

They really needed to work on the backbone of the iWork series to make it a viable change from MS office.

Well, you wouldn't have to pay for iLife or iWork every single year unless you wanted to latest and greatest version though, correct? Regardless, I agree with your point. I think the annual fee for MobileMe is too pricey as it is for what you get, and if the iWork.com subscription will be independent of this, I can't say I like that at all... :(

I hope they've improved the Word doc support, there are far too many errors with it in iWork '08 - even Open Office v2 does a better job which is pretty embarrassing for Apple.

Not sure about iWork.com - looking at the video on the Apple website you can't edit documents online, only add notes to them. Whilst it would be useful without being able to edit online I can't see me paying for it. They should be putting it in with the Mobile Me package as well, which would make a lot more sense.

I'm disappointed there wasn't an iPhone version of iWork announced. I'd be happy with basic editing - its something I've had on mobiles that are a lot less powerful and with smaller screens.

Not sure that the Mac Box Set is a good idea as its actually put me off buying iLife and iWork. If I bought them now I'd be paying about £11 less than the Mac Box Set price, if I wait until Snow Leopard is out and I'll save myself £70 or so (provided they update it to include Snow Leopard).

Seeing as Snow Leopard has been announced as imminent, they really should be including a free upgrade with the Mac Box set. Or announcing the price of Snow Leopard if it isn't a full price upgrade.

That's not necessarily true. You're not necessarily screwed. It depends, in part on when the computer & software were purchased. Apple usually gives free or greatly discounted software upgrades to someone who bought just before they refresh. Usually it is somewhere between 14-30 days. On rare occasion, it is longer.

Apple likely has it somewhere on its site, or else someone at an Apple store can help you. You can also try the 800 number for the Store or the online instant chat help. Heck, someone on this thread has likely already found a link to the Apple site and posted it, so take a look back.

This is exactly why the release stuff/lower the price/upgrade hard drives the first week of January. To squeeze the last penny out of the almost obsolete stuff during the Christmas season.

Consider it a lesson learned. Christmas may be Dec 25, but if you're buying Mac stuff, Christmas is Jan 25.

Yeah, as I said above, I think MobileMe is a bit too costly for what you get, so iWork.com would add a lot of value to the service and assist in justifying the price tag. However I don't see Apple going this route...

Yeah, this is what I am curious about as well. Will APple update the "box set" to include Now Leopard when it is released? If so, will it be at the same price? Will previous purchasers of the box set receive some sort of rebate for then purchasing Snow Leopard? I currently have Leopard on my machine and am not in dire need of the new suites, so I think I will just wait on the sidelines to see what happens before considering any purchases....

Really? It's "imminent"? As I recall, Jobs announced it would be out in "about a year or so" at last year's WWDC. Since that is a July event, I don't think it's quite so imminent. And even if it were imminent I still don't believe that Apple owes it to us for free because they have a new OS planned for release planned down the road. For folks who haven't bought a computer in a while and who are still running Tiger or Jaguar (there are still plenty of folks like that out there) this might be a pretty good way for Apple to sell them on Leopard and a good deal prompting them to upgrade. Clearly those folks aren't interested in upgrading an OS as soon as it is released. For them, this could be a very nice deal in a very bad economy.

Oh, and Snow Leopard will cost $129. Every Mac OS has cost that for some time now (save for 10.1 which was a free upgrade).

This is true - if Snow Leopard isn't released for another 6 months, then Apple may not feel any need whatsoever to offer an updated "box set", as the iSuites will have been out for some time by that point. Guess we'll just have to wait and see...
