Yeah, me, too!

i just got a new macbook on christmas day with ilife and only a few days later purchased iwork 08. What the heck am i supposed to do right now. I want both ilife 09 and iwork 09 especially considering it doesnt do alot of things i need it to that iwork 09 apparently does.

what are my options...can i upgrade for a small fee or can i get on the phone with them?

I'm in the same boat. Jan 6th or later. We're going to have to pay for the upgrade.
I got my wife's for Christmas and my own just before Thanksgiving.

I've learned a lesson. Don't buy Macs or Apple software from October through early January.

yup

The addition of Endnote/MathType support is potentially huge --- writing grants (with tons of embedded figures) is sheer torment using Word, the *only* thing that kept me from going to Pages was Endnote.

Quickest way to make a research scientist swear is to ask about writing grants with Word -- try it!

I'm pretty thrilled.

JT

Man, I totally agree. I just hope it works well with Word's change tracking. Of course now I have to use Endnote. I spent hours trying to get Endnote to properly format a guy's last name that was three parts: ex. "C. von Der Beeck".

Success!

I jot got on the phone with apple and had them upgrade my iwork 08 that i bought on the 26th and they upgraded it for free to iwork 09.

thanks :apple:!!!!

This is exactly why the release stuff/lower the price/upgrade hard drives the first week of January. To squeeze the last penny out of the almost obsolete stuff during the Christmas season.

Consider it a lesson learned. Christmas may be Dec 25, but if you're buying Mac stuff, Christmas is Jan 25.

you don't really know that. we don't know that they've held special announcements 'til macworld. since there is no more apple at macworld we're about to find out.

See my above post. You may be eligible for the free upgrades for the Christmas purchase. The Thanksgiving, not so much.

FWIW, Apple "usually" tends to release updates to its hardware and software at fairly regular intervals. Macworld in January and the WWDC in the late summer are two such events that Apple usually utilizes for such upgrades. It also usually does it's iPod refresh in September and another computer refresh at around that time, as well (in 2008 it was the notebooks, in 2007, new iMacs). Now that Apple uses Intel processors, which lay out their release path very publicly, there is a better idea of when to expect upgrades. Also, MacRumors has a Buyers Guide wherein they list all Apple products and their usual cycles. Check it out in the Guides section from the home page.

Really? It's "imminent"? As I recall, Jobs announced it would be out in "about a year or so" at last year's WWDC. Since that is a July event, I don't think it's quite so imminent. And even if it were imminent I still don't believe that Apple owes it to us for free because they have a new OS planned for release planned down the road.

Oh, and Snow Leopard will cost $129. Every Mac OS has cost that for some time now (save for 10.1 which was a free upgrade).

For the sake of argument, lets say its going to be July - I'd call that imminent especially as they have publicly announced it and are already releasing development builds. My main point though is that the Mac Box Set will lose them sales of iLife and iWork at present, I for one will be waiting to see what happens.

I'm not so sure about the pricing for Snow Leopard. Apple have made it pretty clear that most of the changes will be under the hood and a lot of people will have a problem paying for something they can't see. So either they are keeping quiet about some of the major front end changes (which is highly plausible) or it won't be a full price release.

I think their choice of name for it says a lot as well and strongly points to it being a free or reduced price release. Apple chose that name very deliberately and probably had it planned a few years ago when they named 10.5 Leopard, knowing the next release after that would be more incremental.

From the rope made of back-hair and snot department...

Why the hell would you write your thesis in Pages.app when you can use LaTeX editors ala LyX 1.6.1.

LyX? You conniving upstart. Blasphemy! Everyone knows vi is the only way to go. And I mean vi, not vim or even emacs. ;)

BTW, I have recently completed building a nice brick ranch-style house using nothing more that stone-age tools and a large ball of yarn. I found the loin cloth particularly comfortable to wear during the process.

Seriously, write the document whichever way works best for you.

i downloaded the trial of iWork '09. its nice. a few ui changes, i love the added effects in keynote. and all of the new themes look amazing. but i found one tiny problem in pages... all i could say was oops....

Well, you wouldn't have to pay for iLife or iWork every single year unless you wanted to latest and greatest version though, correct? Regardless, I agree with your point. I think the annual fee for MobileMe is too pricey as it is for what you get, and if the iWork.com subscription will be independent of this, I can't say I like that at all... :(

I imagine iWork.com won't work well/at all unless you have the latest version of Pages. Rightly or wrongly (cause it's not always wrong) Apple's doesn't have a strong track record of caring about backwards compatibility. I subscribe to MobileMe, but can I use the MobileMe gallery with iPhoto? Course not, because I have iPhoto '06, not iPhoto '08.

Safari 4 on Tiger was a bit of a shock for me.

I'll stick too star office from sun.

Why?

It's a little clunky I've found.

You know the beauty of LaTeX and with LyX the bulk of the latex code is done, on-the-fly, especially when one isn't using any custom classes.

All TOC, end notes, footnotes, tables of figures, etc., are consistent, without having to buy EndNote and the math equations from TeX/LaTeX/XeLaTeX allow the math to be stunning.

I certainly respect your right to have an opinion that differs from mine, but if you think Apple is giving Snow Leopard away for free (or even for a reduced price) you are WAAAAAAY delusional, my friend. Snow Leopard may not have new fangled eye candy to offer, but undetr the hood changes are still changes and Apple has invested in them financially. Apple is also notorious for charging its prices firmly and without reservation. Do you think Mobile Me is worth $99 a year? Was .Mac before it? Most people say no. Apple has not ever publicly considered reducing the price ro offered any sort of tiered pricing for it, such as half price for email and syncing only, etc. Snow Leopard is a new Apple OS. Like 10.0, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5, it will cost the end user $129. To those who do not pay the upgrade price, fine. They will get it (and iLife '09) when they buy a new computer of if/when Apple adds it to the Mac Pack....in 2010.

Fair point - I guess it would just depend how flexible Apple wants to be on the issue, i.e. how much backward compatibility they will support.

I'm not sure if anyone else has iWork.com up and running, but I sure do.

Seems strange to offer 10.5 as a box set with the updated iLife and iWork.

Not really that strange given that I'm sure Apple see's there is a relationship between iWork and iLife upgrades and operating system sales. TO get people moving along to Leopard and leave Tiger - its probably given some of the hold backs a good incentive to move because of the deal.

That and the fact that we're currently in a financial poop right now and thus any illusion that gives the idea of 'value for money' and 'bang for the buck' will be taken advantage of by consumers.

can someone please tell me if their's an autosave feature built into iwork 09?

the usefulness of this feature has been debated in previous threads - but it's really important to me - i just dont remember to hit :apple:s frequently enough - resulting in me losing work on several occaisons with pages08.

thanks.

anybody? please - i'd look for myself but i'm travelling and away from my mac for a while.

Not Impressed with iWork.

Autosave = No.
Envelope Print when writing a letter with address book fields = No.
More than a page of text in a cell results in a printing error = Yes.

Seriously, these are 1.0 bugs that have carried over into the 2.0 version. I am pretty disappointed that these flaws remain.

As for iWork.com I like the idea but I would rather see mobileme integration.

thanks for the info.
puzzling ommision - apple recognises users cant be trusted to back up frequently, and so creates timemachine - but fails to recognise that users cant be trusted to save their work frequently.:confused::confused:

Agreed. I think MobileMe is overpriced for what it is, at least iWork.com inclusion in the service would provide more value. Alas, I feel that this will not be the case and Apple will be asking for even more money via subscriptions for iWork.com. I can't blame them, as it's probably a good business decision, but I still don't necessarily agree with it. An interesting item to know will be the price as well.
