So I just updated my Macbook software, this is my first macbook and first time i updated it

and now im stuck on this screen

CIMG1230.jpg

it seems as if its loading, i am able to move the mouse around and the blue loading bar is flickering, but for the past hour, the blue bar hasnt gone any further

is this normal? if not what should i do

THIS IS EXACTLY what happened to me!!!!!!!!!!!

I force-shutdown the computer by holding the power button till it shut down... I had no choice...

It restarted twice and it seemed to be macos 10.5.5.... so I don't know what happened but it seems to be working... knock on wood...

OUCH MY EARS!!!!!!

Word of advice - before starting itunes; TURN DOWN THE VOLUME!!!!!

Sorry for the shouting, but I can't hear anymore... My wife's mini is hooked to amplified speakers. I only need her volume on 4 squares now, before it was 1/2 way up.

Let's hope this improves my macbook tinnie speakers....

Since no one is really posting anything too negative after the update and I never had problems with the last update. Backing up my macbook now and taking the plunge

Ah that time of night where macrumors takes a nap - this message won't post.

Speaking of sound...

DOES anyone else have this annoying humming or buzzing sound in their speakers? On my external speakers it now has this 10 second buzzing sound when the computer makes a sound... or if I play iTunes, same difference...

I'm on a Santa Rosa MBP...

Oh and the annoying spark sounds are back...

Nothing terribly interesting in the Combo updater from what I can tell. This is the only new thing I could find for the GMA X3100.

Don't forget to repair the permissions. There is a lot of stuff that needs to be corrected after the update.

I wonder why Apple does not give this feedback (With a notify window or so? Or automated in the installer?).

Greetz

Because it's not an issue. Repair Permissions is a troubleshooting route, and not something recommended every time you install.

I get annoying hisses/buzzes with my iPhone headphones plugged in to my MBP, and background noise with iTunes.

And just to chime in here as well as at AI, the menubar still doesn't properly follow window/app focus!

When are they going to fix A2DP so that it doesn't cause system audio preferences to crash, so it actually stays connected, so that it doesn't cause the volume keys to stop working after use, and so that it doesn't cause occasional kernel panics. Seriously.

File a bug man.. it's the only way. I have the same problem... A2DP = crap and the only way it will be fixed will be with a FIRMWARE update for the CSR BT chipset.

hmmm... mine is downloading sooooo SLOWLY, it wont go over 500 Kb/s?? And I have a 20 Mb cable connection.......must be a really popular update!

I just upgraded to OSX v10.5.5 (the 'right way' using a standalone installer from a restart into 'Safe mode.') Now I have problems with 'Disk Permissions' reported from Apple's Disk Utility.

ACL found but not expected on "private/var/root/Library/Preferences".

Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x, they are drwxrwxr-x.

I have repeatedly run the "Repair Permissions" routine, but the errors persistently appear. :-(

Obviously this isn't the "right way", and it again shows that repairing permissions, downloading the combo and starting in safe mode are all purely placebo.

Repairing permissions should only need to be done when troubleshooting an issue, NOT required/necessary prior or after an update. You guys think it's helping, but it isn't.

Install from software update, and be done with it. You're all making this harder than it needs to be.

Agreed. To add, if it was the right way, there would be explicit instructions to do this prior to downloading the update, or the mac would restart into safe mode itself before installing. Where do people come up with these notions that "my way is the right way, because someone once told me to...."

Can I still use the combo installer for 10.5.5, if I'm already at 10.5.5
Wont the installer say I'm already at 10.5.5 and I don't need this update.
It will work. Its a big download. I always use the Combo. Good luck.

All good here.

Nope, not on my mini with amplified speakers. Actually sounds better and louder.

My Air updated (321 MB) and then immediately claimed that it had issues with 36 iCal - MobileMe entries.

I had to manually say OK to my iCal events as being the most current compared to MobileMe. Interestingly/Annoyingly all the issues were with iCal entries that were more then 6 months old... some went back over a year.

Weird... seems to be OK now though... will report back if there are any other issues.

Indeed the same issue for me. Had a prompt immediately after the reboot claiming issues with 26 of the entries in my calendar - all dating from more than a year back. Oh well. Seems to be working well now.

gonna be a long time before I can post my update experience on my macbook. Appearantly it has been a while since I backed up - showing 32gb of data that has changed. Also, I can't find my spare ethernet cable, so I am gonna have to do this ovew wireless

I just installed it to my iMac Intel Core 2 Extreme Aluminum earlier 2008, and I don't see anything new or different, just my Bamboo tablet quit after the restart but now it's working alright.... any bad news around here?

Hmm. Will have to let you know. I have a bambo connected to my macbook. 14 more minutes to download over wireless.seems to be moving right a long

Dock

Looks the same to me, but I'm a new Mac owner so I'm not as familiar with the Dock.

Just updated, checked the dock with before and after screenshots. The blue dot is the same, as is the "depth" of the icons (someone mentioned that they looked more distant several pages back) Can't comment on the font used in the dock, forgot to check that, nor on the stability, but judging by the vast majority of posts so far, looks like I won't be having any issues.

And I updated the simple way, ie. from software update rather than the right way which looks like a lot of hassle to be honest. If that was the right way, I'm sure thats how it would be automatically implemented
