Think Tank to Tim Cook: “We should compete directly with the Quest so consumers will buy it and at least try it. Then raise the price once they understand the purpose of it”

Tim Cook to Think Tank: “Pshhh. Increase the price to an outrageous amount to make it seem way more valuable. That will really make it stand out from the competition.”

And this is how we end up with the Vision Pro.

This launch feels like if iPad came before the iPhone (as was originally intended), but we got the bigger, bulkier product first and the real revolution will come in 10 years. Still excited for the potential.
Yep, that’s how tech works.

You forgot Homepod..
Homepod hasn’t been a great success, but I think it’s a very different story, since it’s a secondary product for Apple, just like Apple TV or AirPods (even if those have been a huge success).

When it comes to main products (iPod, iPhone, iPad, AW), Apple has never missed. Which doesn’t mean they will do it again.

HomePod mini has been a huge success for Apple.

And if Siri gets significantly better as expected in iOS 18 it should be even more compelling.

I was not going to get a Vision Pro (at least not at launch) and was very uninterested in it. I passively watched the keynote and missed a lot of information. I think it was in December I finally watched and paid attention to the introduction and was sold by a very niche feature that has since had every mention deleted from Apple material. It depicted a person looking at their ceiling and the ceiling morphed into something else. I hope this comes back.

Today I am still sold on it, even if that is missing. My order will arrive on Friday. I'm very excited and optimistic.
The last VR product I ever tried was the Oculus DK1 in 2013 and it made me very sick to my stomach, but I was still impressed.

No... AVP is priced to hit Apple's roughly 42% GPM.

That naive Think Tank might have to consider a) who would want to compete with the Quest, which has attracted almost no one to AR b) it’s impossible to make anything in AR acceptable at 2x the price range of the Quest.

The Vision Pro is very expensive, it’s at the same time not overpriced, and it has nothing to do (and doesn’t want to have anything to do) with the Quest.

So stoked to see this! I am ready and waiting. Ready to test the full Mac interface, alongside native apps, and check out what's possible in terms of productivity right off the bat. Looks amazing. We are one week out!

Here is a great vid on who it is for and why:

I wish I was the godfather of something…

Other than my goddaughter, that is.

It’s the first true, sophisticated AR device…thought it was interesting that Fox showed a AR ad prior to the NFC Championship. AR is arriving in all forms of media, whether Apple captures it or not it‘s a new and exciting time - if you’re not totally creeped out…

I could almost understand the haters if they had programmed macros to scan MacRumors every day and leave the same old tired criticism of AVP over and over and over. I'd even perhaps consider that to be world-class trolling.

But the idea they are coming here on their own time, day after day, thread after thread, to focus on a product they hate, a product they won't buy, made by a company they hate...well, that just makes me feel sorry for them. Like "get a life" sorry.

Find something you love and spend your time there. It's healthier.

Its perfect for watching content by yourself, and on the go. Take on a flight etc combined with airpods something like this bit a cheaper version for content consumption only would be a huge seller for alot of consumers.

This device has been made for much more than consumption… and as a consequence the cost is extremely high.
So the price is high and it’s not for everyone. Apple knows this.

Running visualization and design apps looks intriguing, but I still can't imagine preferring to watch a movie this way, as opposed to watching on a big-screen TV sitting with my family.
I used to have a 4K home theater projector with a 120” 2.35:1 screen, but was tired of the lack of brightness and black levels. Most people have a 65”-85” tv compared to a 100 foot screen? I think this makes it worth it. Plus a good projector is about $10K+, while this is only $3.5K. A steal IMO.

The same is true for Mercedes, BMW, and Porsche! This first device is not a Ford Focus! Cheaper versions will come in the future by why hobble the first device, especially in a new area like Spatial Computing! Believe it or not this is why Apple is so successful!

Just watched it and it was great. This guy really nails what Apple did with the VP in form, function, and marketing. I realized the haters have no clue what the VP is all about, and frankly, I highly doubt they are the intended market.

Absolutely agree. Fortunately while the hater community has a very strong presence on the forum, they are a tiny minority in the real Mac world.

And there are tech forums where that kind of reflexive hate doesn't exist.
