Is it normal to be "In Transit" for 5 days without showing any further locations?

UPS is showing the following since 20 November...no change since then. Going to Toronto.

Ahh, yes, you're also in Shanghai Gang. We have been tracking to see if there are any scheduled UPS flights out of Shanghai, as a COVID outbreak at the PVG airport cargo terminal caused them to lock the airport down and cancel flights. UPS cancelled all their flights, as the first case was in their facility we're waiting for UPS to resume operations again. FedEx has already resumed operations after cancelling.

Here is my tracking if anybody in the future wants to use it as a data point.

I live in the U.S.
13-inch M1 MBA w/ upgraded chip + 16GB memory
Order placed November 17
Arrives Dec 10 - Dec 17

Stuck on processing like most people it seems :(
Placed order for similar config three days prior to you and still processing, so I imagine you’re going to be there for awhile. I can’t imagine mine’ll prepare for shipment for another ~week, although it’d be nice if it got here early.

Ordered before noon CST on November 11- M1 MBP 16GB/2TB. Still shows Preparing to Ship...
I also ordered the same configuration on Nov 11 and I'm in the same "Preparing to Ship" boat with an estimated delivery date of Nov 27 to Dec 4. Curiously the message says – "We have everything necessary to complete your order. We’ll update your delivery date when your order is preparing to ship."

Do you see the same message?

I do, but mine’s said that “We have everything we need...” message since it initially was listed as “Processing”.

Waiting for the status to move "Processing" for nearly 2 weeks before I reordered for the Air already makes me think they don't actually have everything they need. 😷

I ordered on 14th as well. After reading this forum I was expecting a charge on my card or preparing to ship soon assuming it takes a week to get to me once that happens. Maybe getting it a week early is too wishful. 😢

Considering there are no states between "Processing" and "Preparing to Ship", we can infer that "Processing" includes processing your order, validating the payment method (i.e. a zero-sum transaction on your credit card), and actually building your order, before adding the completed machine to the stock inventory for shipping.

I imagine that the actual build is quite fast - maybe day on the production line, followed by some diagnostics & testing. Of course, there will a queueing system while waiting for the order to start building, so most of the "processing" time, is just waiting for a slot on the production line.

It would interesting to know how many orders there are, and how fast Apple's manufacturers are churning them out. I think Apple sold about 18-20 million Macs last year (of all types). I don't know whether new launches have a large effect of when those units are sold or not (I suspect most buyers are not following new launches and buying soon after the announcement) but maybe the first month after launch is equivalent to a quarter of sales, so about 5 million. But that's all Macs. Maybe half of those are the Air and smaller MacBook Pro? Still a lot of Macs to build. How many can they build a day?

I was going to get the 16GB MacBook Pro model to be future proof, but I’m on a tight budget, so i went for the 8GB and said to myself that I don’t have to wait for another 10 years before upgrading. I’ll manage to have a more stable job, and upgrading won’t be such a hard decision as it was today.
Long story short, in a couple of weeks I will have a new Mac. From a MacBook Air 2010 that doesn’t last enough to watch a movie, to the MacBook Pro 2020 that lasts more than i could use in a day of intense tasks.

I don't mean to upend your decision, but if your budget allowed a base MacBook Pro, I would have gone with the Air with 16GB RAM and saved $100. The Air has the same CPU, and although it doesn't have a fan you're going to get 90+% of the performance of the Pro, especially if you're not doing long-running workloads. 8GB ram is going to be much more constraining than the thermal limitations of the Air, especially with multitasking, and going for a 16GB Air would be much more future-proof and allow you to keep your Mac longer. Swap memory will get slower as your SSD fills up.

I opted for the Pro mainly because I think that over time having a fan has less chances to burn-out the M1. Secondly, because it has a brighter screen, better microphones and speakers, a bigger battery, and last but not least, it has the touch-bar. Perhaps I should also mention that I paid less then 1300€, which is almost 200€ less than what Apple sells it for.
