I agree it might be overkill to have a spare, but hey I work hard and deserve to have little extra now and then. The street prices for a quad mini are crazy right now. If you have buyers remorse, you likely won't lose anything on it.

snagged a 2.3 quad as a spare backup. I had a scare last night when I updated to 10.10.1. My trusted mini stopped working and would boot halfway and shutdown. I recently moved and could not find my box with original 4 gigs memory. Long story short it was the memory (an extreme coincidence) and after finding and putting the original memory in it now boots.

A spare will be good....
And people wonder why I ordered 2 of the quads? :)

For those that recently received their i7's refurbs, is the stock drive in the Upper or Lower bay? And do most of them seem like they just pulled the unit from the regular packaging and put it into a refurb box (e.g. the extra stock units that the stores sent back to the warehouse)?

I think it's a crap shoot. A few months ago I purchased two refurbs for a client. I upgraded them with more memory and SSDs. One stock HDD was in the upper bay, the other in the lower bay.

My i7 refurb arrives tomorrow. I won't be ordering the extra HDD cable until I know which bay the stock drive is in. The refurbs for my client looked brand new inside and out, save for a few scuffs on the outer casing.

I received my 2012 2.3 Mini Server a couple weeks ago. # to those of you adding SSDs, what are you doing about TRIM? Staying with Mavericks or upgrading? Using Trim Enabler and/or disabling next security in 10.10? I am still deciding on how to use my 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD.

I'm starting to wonder if their refurb sales are starting to surpass their 2014 Mini sales.......

Good, hopefully it will send Apple a message.

I'm using TRIM enabler on my 2 mini's. When I went from 10.10 to 10.10.1 recklessly without disabling TRIM, instead of a kernel panic it just disabled TRIM for me which I promptly re-enabled.

My hopes of getting a free "upgrade" from 2.3 i7 to 2.6 i7 are dashed. My invoice shows 2.3. I assume those lucky to get the 2.6 i7, that is reflected in the invoice.

It seems that I am one of the lucky guys, but the invoice said it is i7 2.3...

Another approach might be get AppleCare to protect the quad for 3 years in events like this. After 3 years or so, a future generation will likely include quads again and go from there as needed.

I'll be transferring that same SSD from my Mac Pro into the mini when it arrives, will stick with Mavericks, and enable TRIM.

If someone told me back in 2008 when I bought the Mac Pro that I could replace it with a Mac Mini just as powerful, I would have laughed.
I won't be laughing tomorrow.....;)

Well, do not get too giddy yet. I had my 2012 mini 2.3 at the same time as 2010 Mac Pro 3.2 quad with 24GB RAM and an HD 5870 GPU. The 2.3 and now my 2012 2.6 just slaughters the poor Mac Pro in just about anything GeekBench throughs at it.

That said the Mac Pro with its slow SATA 2 SSD and 1066MHz RAM worked smoother and faster on Photoshop CS6 and Aperture 3. Valley benchmark? I do not even want to think about the difference. I will get depressed.

The Crucial M500 SSD and its alt/backup, a WD RE2 2TB HDD, booted the 2012 mini up just fine from an external dock. I was impressed.

I was lucky enough to grab a 2.3 i7 model last night. I wish everybody else good luck in trying to snatch one up from the Apple Refurb Store.

Thanks. I need it. I've waited years for a mini upgrade and only need one.

On several occasions I have lost a refurb quad out of my cart while trying to check out. The last one was close. I was logged in with one click enabled and still lost it out of my cart.

They do make regular mistakes. One of my iMac 2011s came with 8GB instead of the regulation 4GB it said on the tin.

Although it might be mistakes, I think Apple is too precise in its accounting and inventory systems is my gut feel. I think they intentionally send out higher spec'ed products in their refurbs occasionally, for whatever reason (overstock or availability?).

Otherwise, they'd be mistaking downward too and that would be really bad press.

Just got my i5 Mini, 512 Crucial MX100 SSD and 16GB RAM coming this week, not even going to fire it up till I add the updates.

Hoping I can get 2 U2414H Dells daisy chained and projector all working at the same time :)

Did exactly the same. Read up plenty about TRIM support, having decided to do it despite the possible risks. Saved the Cindori page all over the place, in case the worst happened >> and then I go and forget to disable it before the update!

Fortunately, and just like you, nothing happened. Merely had to re-activate it again. Phew!

I would run the machine a bit before diving into it to make sure it works.

I agree with Magbarn. You should run the new machine to make sure it functions properly. Imagine the trouble shooting if you install the updates and it doesn't work. You won't know if the updates broke it or it was broken to begin with.

So who on here is selling mac mini i7's on Craig's List? :)

Just joking, but one recent Craig's list ad has someone who got a an i7, probably refurbished from apple, and selling it for $800 cash. The funny part is the person admits to not even having it yet. They will send you a copy of the apple invoice when they get one :)

They won't haggle over price and if they don't get $800 they will just have to keep it and instead sell the i5 they also bought. :)

Thought I got a deal on my i5, guess I totally missed the i7 boat, maybe I should have paid the extra for the i7 status. This is like another ATV2 thing all over again.

The value of the quad-i7's won't really skyrocket until the refurbished stocks have been completely depleted. As it stands now it still comes back in stock periodically so there's still a chance to grab one.

I ended up returning the quad-i7 w/ 1TB HDD when I was able to get the quad-i7 w/ fusion drive. I guess I could have sold it locally, but I didn't want the hassle of dealing with buyers and end up missing the return window. And if I return it, it goes back in the supply chain to benefit someone else looking for one.

They are already hitting $1000 on ebay. I suspect people will be trying to get the refurbs just to resell at a profit.

I have a 2012 2.6 i7 1TB Fusion, 16GB Mac Mini w/ 2 years Apple care on eBay.

It sold for $1580.80
