I was wondering the exact same thing. It looks sturdy and I'd be curious to see if someone could break down the interior of the tilt-height adjustment mechanism to see the engineering on the inside. My guess is that the mechanism was designed for the XDR and taken right from it (pro but also heavy/sturdy), therefore reliable for the long term.
The iMac G4 had a similar mechanism for the arm (counter-balanced weights) and AFAIK none has become looser over time. Mine sure hasn't.

Maybe is better this option, more reliable without the height mechanism? Less is more I guess?
Yes definitely sticking with the tilt only option at this point. Also ordered one of these custom wooden stands:

My desk has a very shallow depth. Can someone measure what the depth of the display is, without the part of the stand that protrudes forwards? See attached picture:

Nice stand but I prefer the ones that are wider and with space below, made of wood also

Hmm be careful with this stand, I see it as disaster waiting to happen. It is too narrow and you could knock off the iMac/ASD very easily. Also, do you know if the footprint of the ASD stand is the same as the iMac.

In my office, to save power, I turn off the supplied power to my desk stuff, ie backup gard drives, displays etc. Is the Studio Display taking a long time to "boot" and show the connected computer after power turns on? The Dell takes 5 seconds to start up.

So my Studio Display with height adjustable stand is ever so slightly crooked ...

Long story short, I actually bought both the tilt only version and the height adjustable version. When comparing them back to back, my eyes felt like the height adjustable monitor was slightly crooked. Especially when placed right in front of some wall mounted lights I have that are very level.

This was picked up from an Apple store so I know it didn't get banged up by UPS to my place. Did some searching around and I guess the new 24" iMac has suffered from a few crooked builds too.

So I busted out the rulers and yep, it's indeed a tiny bit crooked and wasn't just my table. Normally I can maybe live with imperfections but, for a $2,000 display where build quality is one of the major selling points, I'm sending it back to Tim Apple. Also the tilt only monitor is indeed perfectly level. Good times.
Dude, you're going to make us all crazy with stuff like that! 😁 But seriously, good catch, and thanks for the idea of using a speed square to quickly check it. Mine is, thankfully, bang on, so you should definitely see if it can be adjusted or if not, replace it.

I'm amazed Apple pulls this off at all. When you think about the manufacturing tolerances required to perfectly align two pivot points so that the ends of a monitor about 60cm apart are set to within a fraction of a millimeter--well, pretty impressive.

You must have been a CNC operator or manufacturing engineer / designer ?

Many people don't ever talk about manufacturing tolerances these days - they assume a robot takes care of the tolerance build ups....

A great, not typical on specs etc... review

It’s a better panel than the 5K iMac and LG UF. I don’t know why YouTubers don’t all understand this still.

I don’t agree about the speakers personally. I have cheap 2.1’s and they sound far better.

He was a little too gentle about the webcam but otherwise I agree with his other points.

lol I know what you mean, especially in regards to a clean workspace.

I've been debating with myself the past few days recently too about my order, cancellation, and reorder. It's in regards to other things, but my mind has been split a few different ways.

I wonder how quickly the Studio Display would get a refresh and if the next version would work out all these kinks in a decent time? Next year? I have no idea. That's kind of what would help me make a clearer decision. I could wait it out for a year with my current setup, but 2 or 3 for an update or a refresh? I'd rather just pay now than to wait that long. Since there's no precedence or timeframe, it's making it more difficult for me to stick with the decision o_O
Apple historic ‘refresh rate’ on monitors has been 4-6yrs

But maybe since this is the first with an ‘iPad inside’ (A13 chip) it’ll get on the 1.5-2yr rotation. 🤷‍♂️ But I doubt it.

I definitely don't want to wait 2 years 😖

I'm now debating the regular stand vs tilt+height stand.

I will sometimes have books or reference material (magazines, material samples etc) in front while designing. Having a tilt+height stand is good for temporarily lifting the monitor up and out* the way for extra room below directly in front for those moments. I'm wondering if it's not just better to put it on a monitor riser or stand permanently 🤔 The minimalist part of me wants to not own a monitor riser. I was in the middle of an* office setup when the Studio Display dropped. I feel like I'm going to have to do mockups of an office and desk setup that would work long term, going through all my use-cases to see what is a want vs a need.

The delivery times for the regular stand is a month earlier, so if I switched to the regular stand it would cut my wait time. I'm still split lol 😵‍💫

Agree!

The Studio display with 600 nits is much better than the older LG panels.

I thought it wasn't going to be enough, but the brightness & clarity blew my socks off!

This. I don't know why people keep saying it's the same panel as the UltraFine. Even YouTube videos that compare them side by side clearly show better contrast and brightness on the Studio Display. Like... that's important for a display.
