Well at least they were listening to us... and gave us an update. At least now I can get some work done instead of clicking refresh every 5 mins.

AWW damn it! another 2 weeks?? It seemed to work pretty good to me 2 weeks ago except for one bug with Flikr and come on...do we really need THAT feature to be 100% complete? Lame...so lame...

Looks like for the moment ...

Take 2 = Vaporware !!!!

Had I know it was gonna be FOUR WEEKS after the Keynote and not TWO as was promised ..... I woulda waited to buy, and maybe by then not bought at all!!! :D

I admit it was an 'impulse purchase'! :D

As it is I got 14 days from date of purchase to make a return!

If Take 2 isn't released by the 13th day, I will return it in protest! :p:D:p:D:D

Jesus man calm down its not like your not getting the update when it happens. Don't return the thing. Patience is a virtue

Vaporware is reserved for software that's only described by press releases and the like.

Take 2 isn't Vaporware as a working release was demonstrated at MacWorld.

It's just not completely baked yet. If anything... it's Doughware.

But I can't wait!

For me, the delay is good news. It means that any kinks will be worked out and it will also allow more time for content to be added to iTunes. As I check iTunes each day, more and more movies are added for rental so once I do get my hands on Take 2, I'll have more of a choice.

As for now, my Apple TV works as it's always done so I have no complaints. I have plenty of shows and movies to watch. I couldn't live without it and things are only going to get better once the update arrives.

Reading some of the posts on here from those that have just purchased the Apple TV, you would think the unit doesn't work until they get the update. Remember, those that have had :apple:TV from the start haven't had the rental feature either. You own the unit for a week or two and you expect it to magically appear just for you. So be patient, :apple:TV isn't just about rentals, there are plenty of things you can do while you wait. So start loading it up with photos, music, movies and shows and then enjoy the rentals when they become available

We're going to have to dust this thread when we come back in a couple of weeks... It has emptied out!

Just a bit of speculation that's floating around:

1. It's big, approximately 1.2GB.
2. Currently requires a USB jump drive to install.
3. Replaces Tiger-based frameworks with Leopard-based frameworks.
4. Apple debating whether to split the update in two—creating a smaller update to initiate wirelessly on the Apple TV with a larger update through iTunes.
5. Rentals will only launch with 20th Century Fox and Paramount movies in HD with Disney coming soon.
6. Current opening sequence replaced with purple/green opening sequence.

Maybe it's because I work for the Canadian government... but somehow I wouldn't be surprised if the update is stuck in translation. After all, we only saw the demo in *English*, right?

I only have a 512MB flash drive if you can believe -- and I don't think I've ever even used the damn thing.

I'm glad apple is spending the time trying to save me a few bucs on a usb drive installation. It'd feel like I was jump starting a dead battery.

Well isn't that the juicy post we all wanted to jump-start this thread again.

well I have a 4GB drive, and i'm not happy if they're waiting just to satisfy you :p

I don't see why they can't just update over itunes. 1.2GB is nothing - thats just syncing a movie which is what the damn thing is designed to do. Maybe the unit just isn't designed to update from itunes. Although considering you'll have to download the update to your mac/pc to put it on a USB stick, don't know why it can't just download it directly - the hit on your bandwidth is the same anyway

The problem lies in the fact that it is basically installation a brand new OS which needs to overwrite basically every OS file currently installed. If the size is true, they need to do some repartitioning as well (OS partition is less than a GB if I remember). I think their final solution will involve downloading a small netboot client to the AppleTV, and using the iTunes host as a image server to remotely install the OS. This is much like what some businesses do to push out standardized images on their workstations. Of course, I'm sure Apple has people much smarter than me working on this, if it is indeed the reason for the delay. :D

That's ridiculous. That's not what "vaporware" means at all. That guy in the lawn chair on the beach doing HD videoconferencing on his watch in that 1999 Cisco commercial (or even in the new ones)... that's vaporware. This is just a very slightly late SW update.
